Thoughts?

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

I would say no, but if you are Swansea born and bred you have an affinity that can not be matched.

Primarily, people from their home town support that which relates to their HOME town / city
Same applies with ,say rugby,

Children in a playground always want to have heroes to be . In our past, we have had relatively few
These days however,we see shirt wearers from South Korea to Mali seeing themselves as fans. They are not . They are followers of a brand

On Wales with only four pro clubs ,two overwhelmingly pre eminent historically, there is a tendency for those born outside those connirbations to “ support” the billybillox big clubs mainly as they can follow “ success”

Caernarfon people follow Merseyside and Manchester clubs as they are the nearest geographically

I ll just say this,O have no time for Swansea folk who fail to support the Swans prefering to follow the fortunes of Arsenal,Spurs,Liverpool,Man Utd

Finally, nobody in Sunderland will be a Man Utd fan
Nobody in Newcastle will follow Citeh t
Nobody in Leeds would contemplate supporting Arsenal

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

That’s because of your influence
It doesn’t change the fact that local people support local club
You support the club of your city and have passed it on.

I took my own son to our away games but he stopped going after getting xxxxxxed off with the anti England chants and by the appalling posting of some on this site in its previous incarnation . And yeah,we ve been to more away games than you would think and he’s met several of our fans .
Only takes a few to poison a relationship

Well, one of the biggest Liverpool supporters clubs outside of the city is based in Newcastle, Man Utd run three to four coaches to all matches from there. Celtic and Rangers are huge in that area. Yorkshire as an example in Leeds has supporters clubs representing , Utd, City, Liverpool, Celtic, Rangers, even all of the local yorkshire clubs.

Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea all have supporters clubs in these places. Plus Villa.

Swansea has supporters from the area of all these clubs. As has Cardiff. It’s no different.

The biggest Swans supporters club in England Phil and I ran for a number of years. The MAGS. Out of the some 200 members, half of which at its height were English easily.

Sorry to put the record straight, but that statement isn’t correct, and Manchester Utd state they have over 4,000 regular followers of the team from London and have done for over fifty years.

No of course not.

It’s a city of 250,000 and an average attendance of about 15,000.

Even accounting for it not being the same 15,000 every week, that’s generously 20,000 fans that regularly go to games.

My English mates that come down a couple of times a season and go to the away games in the Midlands are bigger Swans fans than 90% of the people who live here.

I’ve mentioned this before, a school teacher I know from Pentyrch, Cardiff when the Swans were in the premier league the kids wore Swans tops to PE and other sports. Many had Michu or Gylfi on the back. They won’t have changed their allegiance. People rarely do. Nowadays they still do, not as much but that’s what Premier League success brings you and why the amount of Swans fans in places like Merthyr is huge.

We have had many hero’s for young kids to admire. Bony, Michu, Gylfi, Piroe, (remember these are young children) in history the list is endless, I disagree again.

When Phil and I were writing Roger Freestone’s biography ( not the best) we spent three days at the Vale of Glamorgan complex before he represented Wales v Brazil I think. They had a six a side game between Cardiff fans in the squad and Swansea. Hartson, Matt Jones, Mark Pembridge and others I can’t recall gave themselves names of their Swans heroes. Hartson was insistent on being John Toshack, Roger was Jimmy Rimmer, as Phil will confirm. Even Nathan Blake wanted to be Leighton James because he was better than any Cardiff player he liked, he became Phil Stant in the end.

We interviewed all of them at the time at the press interviews. It’s in the internet ether somewhere. I even have the dictaphone tapes still. Ryan Giggs was a revelation when we spoke to him. He kept trying it on with my daughter who was there for the last day before the matches 😂

Definitely not, I think it’s great we get fans from outside the area, thinking primarily of the west wales and valleys Jacks but we should welcome anyone who supports the club wherever they are from. I get the point about it being a different lens/feeling for the club if you’re from the city, particularly somewhere like Swansea, but it’s just a different lens.

I was born in the Neath Valley and grew up there partly and they in rural Carmarthenshire ( now called West Wales for the BBC who know English people do not care).

I have always supported Swansea city. It is based on local geographic factors. My home area. If the club was relocated to Leighton Buzzard I would cease to support them even with the same shirt badge logo etc. It is not just a brand .

I have lived in London Norwich Newcastle Scarborough and Birmingham and always supported Swansea city. You missed the point of Leighton Buzzard.

I would not support Swansea city it they were based there. Part of the appeal for me is it is Welsh as so am I.

Beating English teams gives me pleasure as a does being no 1 team in Wales. Swansea have in recent years " punched above its weight". Currently fans see this era as unsuccessful but in reality mid table in the Championship is the clubs natural position and above it median.

I moved here in 1976,before most of our punters were a tadpole
I’ve never supported anyone else
I’ve had corporate hospitality at Goodson and Anfield and didn’t do anything fir me
I’ve been in the Kop for St Etienne classic but it ain’t the same
Best non Swans match was seeing Tranmere in the cup glory days under Aldo .
I’ve been to all the lowly northern grounds and had a post match review of Richard Shepherd for the drive home

Growing up on the mid 60s, all the lads were either Man u, pool or leeds fans, only poor old me was a Swans fan and was always taken the wizz out of, a few years ago their all wearing swans tops and boasting they were lifelong fans. don't see them wearing tops now.

also been messaging an old mate tonight, who moved away mid 70s, sees more away games than he can manage home.
