They are realising that it is very easy to be in opposition but not so easy to govern. I'm not defending the last lot because they are inexcusable, but this lot are really are making a hash of things and it's going to be us who pay. Is it down to lack of experience in all areas including business and projects, Starmer really should designate to people who are capable or are there none in his government.

It’s not going to make any difference to the massive majority of students. It’s an accounting exercise to balance the books and keep institutions solvent while a better solution to university funding is found. One big step would be to stop degree protectionism from some professions. Having to take on a big debt shouldn’t be necessary to take on a job, particularly where we have shortages.

The worse period for austerity was the five years of the coalition government. Who remembers the LibDem Orange Book group now? They were every bit as bad as the Tories, and in particular gave full support to the shambolic NHS reforms of that period. When the Tories took sole power they turned out to be a relatively high spending, high tax government, even if not always efficient. What I remember though is that in the years when public borrowing increased to cope with energy price spikes, COVID and the cost of living crisis, the Labour opposition constantly called for even more generous spending, which would have pushed public debt even higher, That is what Labour are doing now with the change in the fiscal rules. So I would say all three main parties have a degree of responsibility for where we are now.

For austerity to work it has to be short and sharp. They dragged it out half heartedly for the best part of a decade. Effing idiots.

They had to be a high tax and high spend government because they gave billions of pounds to their friends, hugely messed up Brexit and invested even more billions in hair brained schemes like HS2. They ended it in a shocking political state after COVID / party gate / Johnson so had to try to claw public opinion it back through NI cuts we couldn't afford and unsustainable support for energy bills. It was all a political game. Labour could, and morally should, have called them out on this but it would have been political suicide for them and the country because there's a chance we'd have had the same bunch of fools for five more years after the last GE. This is at the door of the Tories, I hope we see the end of them in their current state and we get a decent opposition. Badenoch isn't going to do it, she may take a few votes from Reform but that's about it.
Starmer! Wow! on 01:14 - Nov 6 with 410 views | Robbie | Did not vote for Labour at the General Election , they got voted in so I accept that decision . The People have spoken and they look forward to change under a new fresh regime at the top table of Government . However when Sir Kier got the keys to No.10 , Rachel soon followed into No.11 soon after . All bets are off , sorry but our pledges and manifesto promises were vote winners for us . This black hole shortfall crops up on every single Political debate , bored of hearing this excuse at every corner of finances , got to be filled at all costs . Hit the Pensioners , small time business owners and now Students , our future with more debt and taxation rises , train drivers are not moaning about their wages strangely . Liz and Kwasi ruined the Financial Markets in 63 days of chaos at the helm , what a pair . Retired now but old Trade Unionist member of TGWU and the Unite Union later called . Labour lost their way under Corbyn I believe , a headless chicken swayed by any Worldwide issues he could step on their bandwagon . Much like todays lot probably . Trump and Starmer as besties , should be fun in a few hours .

If you could , please could you explain why these rises will n oy affect the students , my understanding is that the fees are loans which have to be paid back.

Your last paragraph is bang on. There needs to be a vast emphasis on apprenticeships instead of degrees.

Medical degrees of all sorts shouldn't result in debt to the student. The problem with encouraging apprenticeships is that universities have grown to become the biggest employer in most cities, even though I agree with the principle. I dread to think the state Swansea would be in if it wasn't for the two uni's.

As I said, the real squeeze came in 2010-2015 under the Coalition. Read the Orange Book to see the role "economic liberalism" played in supporting the Tories. You might possibly argue that austerity continued in watered-down form for a couple of more years but spending was exceeding tax receipts by 2019. Thereafter the various external crises, plus withdrawal from the EU, led to rapidly increasing deficits and borrowing. I don't think dodgy PPE contracts, awful as they were, made that much difference in the overall cost of COVID-19, when set alongside the costs of supporting households and businesses through two lockdowns and the impact on international and domestic trade. Here a a potted history from the IFS. "The parliament from 2010 to 2015 was certainly dominated by the fiscal consolidation, more widely known as austerity. The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) had opened up a budget deficit – that is the difference between total government spending and total government revenues – that was at a record high for the UK since 1946–7 and the focus on getting it down involved cuts to public spending on a scale that had not been delivered in recent decades. (...) by 2019, the current budget – that is the gap between total government revenues and non-investment spending – had, just about, been returned to surplus. The twin shocks of Covid-19 and the subsequent ‘cost of living crisis’ saw the deficit grow again, reaching a new record high in 2020–1. (...) the combined effects (...) on borrowing has been to leave government debt at above 90 per cent of national income, more than twice its pre-financial crisis level (of around 35 per cent), and not falling. In contrast to the period between 2010 and 2019, the parliament that began in December 2019 has seen big increases in both spending and tax. https://ifs.org.uk/publications/conservatives-and-economy-2010-24 [Post edited 6 Nov 9:19]

I never voted Tory in 14 years and certainly will never vote Labour as I’ve experienced 25 years of the incompetent liars who rule the Senedd. So….where have you been for the last 25 years? Do you think it’s only fair we replace one bunch of clowns with another just to be fair?

Why not? Who should pay for it? Should the taxpayer fund it? They will earn bigger money than most when they qualify and get experience. Should someone on minimum wage fund their degrees?

I’m worried now as I agree with you. Just read the total student debt for England currently stands at £236 BILLION and accumulating at £20 BILLION a year due to new loans to 1.5 million students.

Yes the taxpayer should fund them. The taxpayer needs them. Are there any Dr's who can't find a job? Or Dentists? Or Physiotherapists? Etc, etc. They deserve to earn more money than anyone else.
