Interesting piece on the BBC website about the decline of long distance goals, and the death of entertainment in football as a result of a thousand stats.
Of course, this brings back memories of Russy's admission that he was screaming at Fulton not to shoot just before Jay's long distance winner Vs Reading hit the net. Kinda exemplifies the whole thing.

Not really I'm quite sure when I watch the EFL highlights tonight I'll see wonder shot after wonder shot popping in from all 3 lower divisions.
No doubt helped by more modern footballs and presumably better and more athletic technique by todays footballers.
The other thing that never fails to amaze me these days is every single week hapless goalkeeper after goalkeeper in games galore giving away goal after goal by attempting to be Bobby Moore in playing out of defence when its quite clear that they have the footballing abilities of Dudley Moore.
One can only assume that they are under instruction from managers like several of the recent Swans managers who couldn't grasp that their Keepers wouldn't be in goal if they were any good as an outfield player and defenders who couldn't trap a bag of cement or react faster than a stricken oil tanker when trying to field said goalkeepers pitiful attempts at playing out from the six yard box. I agree with the second part 100% but I haven't noticed many screamers when I'm watching highlights.
Screamers are great whn they fly in but when a long range effort doesn't hit the net it gives possession away, mostly and then your second point comes into play. | | | |

The ball is so light now it swerves both ways, its like a bloody beach ball.
