Tata and the new UK steel strategy 12:56 - Sep 11 with 4029 viewsAnotherJohn

The statement just made today in Parliament is the first encouraging development I have seen under the new government. The big plus is that, in addition to an improved redundancy package, there will be an intention to bring back some UK primary steel production to complement the planned electric arc furnaces at Port Talbot and Scunthorpe. I suppose the downside is that the Tata deal does not postpone the closure of the existing blast furnaces, does not reduce the number of lost jobs significantly, and does not push Tata to add a DRI front end to the EAF in the short term. It was a bit rich for the Shadow Business Minister to criticise Labour for this when so little progress had been made by the last government. I will wait with interest to see what those with greater knowledge than me of the plant think.

Good points, and yes he brought in 20mph, which appears to have been a great success so far. Cutting fatalities and accidents is a huge positive

The minister who oversaw the introduction of the 20mph limit is not standing at the next Senedd elections, I wonder why.

So why are they greatly reducing the number of 20 mph limits across the Country.

An ill thought out policy that could have been handled far better

Well, it seems to be working, unless you have something against saving lives on the road. Of course, any policy can be fine tuned, but in general it's been successful

No company is going to risk major investment in Wales due to the poor road infrastructure. If only Drakeford had given the go ahead for the Brynglas tunnels relief road. This would have made access to West of Newport far easier and less costly. Senedd let Wales down.

This is blatantly untrue. Companies are investing in south Wales. Ineos was due to replace Ford in Bridgend and terms were agreed. Then the people of NPT and Bridgend voted for Brexit and Ineos switched the plan to Toulouse.

Big firms can do transport overnight.

I presume you haven't driven to Bristol lately & seen all the new warehousing/factories on the M49 just off the King Charles's bridge?

List companies investing in Wales to replace well-paid jobs lost in Fords, Tata & Biomet?

If life in logistics was as easy as everything being transported overnight.

Logistics does not matter too much in the high tech world where you ship software.

I say there is ongoing investment in south Wales then you refer me to Investment near a bridge that does not exist. "King Charles Bridge"?

This was for 2023

Some bloke from Felixstowe continually runs down Wales for reasons unknown.

Welsh people voted to end free trade with our biggest trade partners including RoI. The WAG advised against it. Now the Brexiteers are squealing and blaming the WAG. The man to blame is a mop haired fool schooled in Eton.

What goes around comes around. New US investment in Bridgend . A computer hub employing few people.

The UK's biggest trade partner was the EU and we didn't vote to end gfree trade, we voted to leave. What happened after was down to rubbish politicians.

Now Wales biggest trading partner wasn't the EU, we did and still do most of our trade with Englaind but that is called "intra" trade and isn't included in our export figures.

Currently our top export destinations are the USA and the Republic of Ireland, selling goods worth £3.4bn and £3bn for each country in 2022. Germany is our third biggest export partner, with £2.4bn in sales for 2022.

Most complaints or running down aren't aimed at Wales but simply at the Senedd. The Senedd always blames Westminster.

Welsh people voted to leave the EU. They were warned by the WAG this was a very unwise risk. One of the risks was the loss of free trade. They took the risk.

They were putting their jobs at risk for no local benefit. The WAG is a very significant player in bringing work to Wales.

The risk takers are now squealing at the hard times and job loses. The promoters of this madness w is to move the blame back to the WAG. They have nowhere else to go.

The uk government should pay Wales the HS2 billions.

Also the Crown Estate needs to be like Scotland.

Air passenger duty devolved like scotland and the north of Ireland.

And throw in St Davids day as a reassigned Bank Holiday.

Plus fund the making safe all the old coal tips.

All that will help south Wales.
Show us the benefits of this union.

I think you'll find that once the grants ran out Companies left Wales also the major employers left Wales years before the Brexit vote. Company's such as Sony , Panasonic , LG Murco , Hotpoint real major employers in Wales all gone with no real replacement which could provide the jobs so much needed. Can you name any Company which you believe `can replicate the number of jobs equal to one Company we've lost?
