Something to keep everyone busy during the international break :)

When is a band not a band and when is a solo artist not a solo artist?.....

Always intrigued me that 'Bryan Adams' is always classed (and named) as a solo artist yet he's been with pretty the same band most of his career. It's not him plus a large bunch of rotating support musicians.

Conversely, The Eels are classed as band when it's really just Mark Everett plus rotating musicians.

I mean, Queen could have just been 'Freddie Mercury' and some other blokes.

Same with the Beatles and so on.....

Eee, when I were a lad, if it was pop it was called a group and if it was a bit more classy it was a band.
I always feel a bit queasy about using the word artist for some performers.
I guess I'm a musical snob.

For much of its existence, Steely Dan was just Walter Becker and Donald Fagen with musicians they brought in for recordings. And it worked magnificently well.

When I were a lad, if I wanted to appear upper-classy, I would refer to a band as a "popular beat combo".

My favourite dance was the Cumberland Square Eight but that died out c1840 and I kinda lost interest after that.

Meat Loaf couldn't have done much without Steinman.
Bit harsh on Queen, with Brian May on guitar.
We're the Beatles just Lennon and/or McCartney?

War On Drugs is basically Adam Granduciel ++ others

The Fall - is basically Mark E Smith and a bunch of blokes

Television Personalities - is Dan Treacy and a bunch of blokes

Spiritualized - is Jason Pierce and a bunch of blokes

On the other hand

Bruce Springsteen is more known than the E-Street Band

The Eagles - who know's who's original or not now

Black Sabbath - same as above

The Beatles however were a band... clearly John, Paul, George and Ringo

The Cure. Rob's the only constant member. Even if Simon has been on bass for like 90% of the time.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

Simply Red - Same as above with Mick Hucknall

Gorillaz - All Damon Albarn.

Same with ELO. Mainly Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan (great name) for most of the time, though not all. Really just Jeff Lynne now.

Fleetwood Mac completely changed in look and style, I think only Mick Fleetwood remained throughout.

Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship to Starship is another intriguing transformation. Grace Slick the only constant as far as I’m aware.

As long as they can bash out a decent rendition of Greensleeves.

Sorry to be pedantic Juzzie but it's just Eels, no "The".

Your Queen comment is so far off the mark. I reckon Brian May wrote as many songs as Freddie did. John Deacon wrote some of the well known ones too (Another One Bites the Dust, You're My Best Friend etc). The sound of Brian May's guitar is so unique, mainly because he built it himself originally.

On the "solo" artist side, David Bowie is the one for me that probably wouldn't have had anywhere the success he had without Mick Ronson.

A bit controversial on Bowie there, TW. Ronson was certainly a big plus point in Bowie's rise to fame and he was brilliant on my two favourite Bowie albums, Hunky Dory and Spiders. But I firmly believe Bowie would have become the superstar he was without him. After all, Ronson left Bowie in 1973 and Bowie's fame just continued to rise and rise.

sorry guys, my usage of Queen and the Beatles was just an off-the-top-of-my head-first-to-mind 'could' example. It wasn't meant literally, just to set in motion the conversation.
