Abdulai 22:38 - Aug 28 with 3611 viewsTomsyard

I know he’s highly regarded by the club but he was awful again tonight but I’m not sure what his role is in the team, does he? Is he an attacking wide midfielder or a central one, is his job to sit a little deeper to cover, does anyone know? What did the manager tell him his role was, perhaps he didn’t listen, perhaps he wasn’t told who knows.

442 will get eaten alive by practically any team in the Championship. The two will be chasing shadows all game.

Allen can only last 30-60 minutes.

Franco I agree on. He should definitely be one of the three.

You may well be right. But I'll take a 3-1 loss having tried to fire some shots at least opposed to having 73% possession against a team a division below us, ravaged by injuries and not making their keeper have to make one save.

If I said drop Cullen back to an AM position there's your 3 'midfielders'

Fair enough, so we’ve got a striker, Allen who I’d definitely play but won’t always be fit and will never last a game and Franco, who I’d also definitely play.

This is exactly why Grimes has to play. We don’t have credible alternatives.

1 win, 1 draw and 1 defeat in the league. Pretty much par for the course. Last night was embarrassing but it won’t define our season.

He doesn’t have to be the only player through which all football must be played . He should be nowhere near our back four

That’s an entirely different point. I’m not disagreeing with that.

Hopefully Franco.

He was a standout at u21 as a defensive midfield linking play to the forwards . He was always on the move for the u21 and very difficult for opponents to track. Williams is at fault here. He is not a winger.

He glides rather than has pace surges. His strength is his movement. Fulton and Grimes are static on ball reception . Abdullai is exactly what Swansea need in midfield. Abdullai is similar to De Guzman who collects on the move.

Dropping Grimes when he plays like he has for the last two games isn't weakening the side if you replace him with basically any other midfielder in the squad. We could play Fulton, Franco and Cooper and we would at least be no worse off. I'd also certainly want to see what Abdulai could do if we actually played him in the proper position. Last night was an opportunity to do just that and Williams flubbed it.

Back on the subject of AA, I can well remember the derision and howls of discontent that used to follow every selection of Joel Latibeaudiere in the team. Another player blamed for another manager's inability to put round pegs in round holes.

Doing just fine at Coventry in his natural position.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

If we played Fulton and Cooper for any length of time, I think people would quickly start to appreciate Grimes a bit more.

As for Abdulai, I couldn’t agree with you more.

Clearly AA is not a winger, he looks uncomfortable playing there and isn't doing himself or the team any good. If he isn't going to get a chance in his preferred position at the moment we need to get him out loan somewhere he will.

The problem with that is Williams wants cover on the wings. We’ve got Ginelly, Parker and I assume Govea? all medium term injured.

When one or two of those are back, perhaps he’ll get a run in the middle.

Until then, it looks like it’s going to be square pegs

I'd discount Ginnely, can't see him being ready until Christmas at best.

He is a kid, being played out of position, by a manager who thus far hasn't shown us much evidence of his arse/elbow awareness.

How many times are we going to do this? Are our supporters all completely incapable of taking circumstances into account when discussing a players worth?

It's hard to judge a players worth when he comes into the squad as a CDM but is then mde to play on the wing.
As a winger he is rubbish but I've not seen him at CDM yet to judge his worth there.

There was a previous comment about players stifling Grimes....I'm very consistent with this, Grimes is the problem, Grimes stifles the rest of the team. Everything (almost) goes through Grimes and he is slow, negative and entirely unadventurous. He refused several attacking passes v Cardiff because he must keep possession, his stats must be good whatever else happens. I'm fed up of seeing him deeper than our centre backs when we have the ball and are supposed to be attacking, even more fed up of him dropping deep to pick it up and leave a yawning gap where he should be with no pass availabe to him becaue he's not there and no one drops in.

Agree on both.

Abdulai may well turn out to be a disappointment. It is simply not possible to say for certain one way or another yet because he hasn't had a chance to play in his preferred role.

I don't think Grimes is thinking about his stats when he plays. I just think he's hardwired not to take risks and the stats accumulate as a result of that. It's the people who think that those stats have any value whatsoever that are the problem, and I don't doubt that we've had plenty of them on the coaching staff over recent years.

Unfortunately it’s all about him - the legend in his own lifetime Matty Grimes. He has never shown desire for the team to succeed - lukewarm in attitude and ability sadly. Time for the unthinkable to actually happen……

I have no doubt that people reported to Russy and that he saw himself that Joel Latibeudiere was a central player rather than a winger. Didn't stop him hanging the player out to dry by insisting that we use him in the wrong position.

Some people will insist on trying to prove themselves smarter than those who can see the obvious. It rarely pans out that way.

Thank you for posting this. As I explained he is perpetual motion if played correctly as the u21 coach did. Collecting and distributing the ball while moving at all time. Not static waiting for a service like Fulton and Grimes.

De Guzman was like this for Swansea. The club need to promote players like this and young Parker. Fulton and Grimes are stale and got Duff sacked.

The squad cannot stagnate and must evolve.

I have said for several seasons he strangles anything that could be an attacking option.
If he finds himself 20 yds out ,even with space,he will pass sideways
Several of our ciaches always selected him.
Were they wrong ?
Yes
Could we do better?
Yes

Grimes IS the problem and always has been.

The long contract another ludicrous decision.

My God,how it is costing us

Laughable statement, if Peart - Harris signs which looks likely will put him on the back burner.

I have seen nothing in him yet to enthuse me

Me neither and I’ve said so on numerous occasions.

The clips are against U21 opposition, a huge difference to the physicality of the Championship.

Res seems to be taken in by U21 players thinking that they can replicate their performances at Championship level when clearly they can’t. I forget a player that he kept going on about (there are so many!) but he was putting in performances in the U21s but given his chance in the first team he was left standing. He’ll remind me no doubt😁
