Liz Truss considered scrapping all cancer treatment 23:19 - Aug 27 with 4887 views | majorraglan | Several newspapers are carrying reports that following her poorly received mini budget, Truss considered scrapping NHS cancer treatments to save money. To be honest I was stunned when I first read the article in The Independent and thought it was a wind up because April the 1st had passed, but the story is being carried by nearly all the papers. The articles give the impression that things were shambolic under Truss, but it’s staggering that she and some of her team could countenance such a move. https://www.independent.co.uk/?CMP=ILC-refresh https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/27/liz-truss-considered-cu

Liz Truss considered scrapping all cancer treatment on 22:36 - Aug 28 by Scotia | The announcement was enough. They weren't implemented because they were completely mental. Taxes have to be raised because the country is skint. We're skint because of a financial crash, covid, wars and stupid vote grabbing NI cuts. Oh and Brexit. We're all hurt and we're going to be hurt in the pocket more. But if my old man doesn't have to wait 8 hrs for a taxi if he's having a stroke I'm happy to pay for it. [Post edited 28 Aug 22:49]

What financial crash? Constantly putting up taxes will end up making us all poorer.

Liz Truss considered scrapping all cancer treatment on 22:47 - Aug 28 by majorraglan | Truss’s tax rises weren’t implemented because Hunt came in and set about reversin* them all, but her actions most certainly impacted on interest rates and caused them to rise higher than they would have had it not been for her budget. The pound fell sharply and borrowing costs on government bonds soared. This caused chaos for pension funds as the complicated way they borrowed money worked on the assumption that bond rates would always be steady and relatively low. Most noticeably for the average household, mortgage lenders started to pull their best rates, as Swaps – which set fixed pricing – began to climb. Within a week of Truss’s budget most of the big lenders had pulled their mortgage products and replace them with alternatives which were approximately 1/2% higher. |

Most of the mortgage rate increases happened in between the Monetary Policy Meetings as a result of the impact the budget had on the money markets. Bond values were adversely affected and the government’s borrowing costs rocketed because of the unfunded tax cuts Truss proposed.

Mortgage companies put rates up, then back down. Landlords used it as an excuse to charge more because they’re unscrupulous scumbags. There was nothing stopping the BoE putting interest rates down more quickly. But they were going to go up anyway due to COVID and UKRAINE borrowing. Might as well blame Brexit for it too whilst you’re scapegoating.

That’s true but you haven’t explained how continually raising taxes actually helps pay for those public services. It’s called diminishing returns . If you raise taxes too much you have wealthy people pulling out their business and workers stop working as much, for example. Look at the laffer curve too. This labour government want economic growth, they’ve said it’s their modus operandi. They say in continually. Yet taxes rises will have the opposite effect. Labour want to raise taxes so they can spend more. Because labour aren’t clever enough to fathom how else to pay for public services, other than to milk us all dry in the process. Which will lead to economic stagnation and services still being underfunded. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We don't have time to wait for economic growth to trickle down to pay for public services. 14 years of the Tories have seen to that. Public services are completely on their knees from refuse collection to neuro surgery. We need tax rises and cuts in the short term. Hopefully they can be reversed in the future, but I'd guess that'll take a minimum of two parliament terms. Hopefully we'll be in a better state by 2034.

Rubbish. We could quite happily cut the size of our over inflated state to pay for services. Or maybe the huge foreign aid budget. Better yet the multi billions we spend on foreign criminals who enter the UK illegally and are housed in four star hotels. But no, let’s tax hard working British citizens and cut the winter fuel allowance for our elderly. Indefensible.

Where can we make these cuts? It'll raise peanuts in real terms. Especially if you don't want to means test some benefits. About 30% of "foreign" aid is spent in the UK by the home office, you've double counted there. The immigrants in hotels is a legacy of the Tories.

They may have been put up in 4 or 5 star hotels, but they couldn't use the facilities and weren't getting 5 star food. The image of immigrants using the spa's and Gyms of these hotels was not reality

Peanuts? We pay commercial banks interest on money created for the 2008 financial crisis, covid and Ukraine. It's currently £35 billion a year. Pure profit for banks and it's 100% wrong.(It used to be alot less) In 2023, the UK government spent approximately £15.4 billion on foreign aid. In 2023, £4.3 billion (27.9%) of total UK ODA was spent supporting refugees in the UK. Ok, so lets not count numbers twice. We have multiple agencies within the UK government that waste billions of tax payers money and are completely pointless. We can raise multiple billions just with the above. It's definitely not peanuts. Far from it. Who cares what the legacy of the tories is? Let's fix these problems instead of playing the blame game.

Well said. We do no longer have an empire We have given old colonials British passports which has changed British cities and culture to unrecognisable levels We should not feel obliged to help anyone Many countries don’t because they don’t have th3 guilt we have over our past Caribbeans want reparation centuries after we left . We abolished slavery We should have no guilt and be free

Thrre's nothing wrong with foreign aid per se. There's absolutely nothing wrong with helping people either. However, we apparently have a ''hole in the budget'' that needs to be financed. Why is our first port of call to self harm? To take away the winter fuel allowance for our elderly. To raise taxes(When they promised they wouldn't), which will ultimately hurt us even more. When there is an issue like this, we need to cut from things like foreign aid, to fund out necessary services. A good example would be on an aeroplane and theres an emergency. They tell you to help yourself, get your air mask on, your life jacket, then do it for others. It's absolutely ridiculius to continue to give £15+ billion to foreign countries, whilst we have a deficit. If we continue to do this, we won't be able to give anyone anything, because we wont even have a country anymore to do so. We are continually self harming and it needs to stop.

Interest rates that Liz Truss managed to increase. Nevertheless we can't just decide to stop paying it, it's our debt. It's too late to save anything there. What agencies are pointless? You may not agree with what some of them do but I don't think there are any we can abandon. Problems need to be fixed, there is no point in blaming anyone. But like it or not we have to pay for it.

Who cares about Liz f**king Truss? This constant obsession with slandering people or picking up on past issues which give you dopamine hits but solve nothing. Just stop! We can stop paying the interest that i've pointed out. It's not interest of our national debt. The bank of England pay interest to commercial debts that the government gifted to them(Albeit its created money) to facilitate the banks being able to stay afloat. So, the banks have their cake and eat it, too. It's completely ridiculous and needs to stop. https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations Have a look at how many departments and organisations the state has. It's bloated and could easily be cut back, with absolutely no detriment to anyone but the fat cats getting paid to be 'pub;ic servants'. Doing little work and milking the tax payer. Only a fool would argue against this obvious truth.

EXACTLY. The government want the tax payer to pick up the bill for their ineptitude and wasteful spending on uneccesary things. If this was a family member, you'd tell them to do one! Yet we are meant to bend over and take it when it's the government. They can sit and swivel

Ok. I'll stop paying the interest on my mortgage too, I wonder what will happen. Look at what those departments do not just how many of them there are. We're a country of 70 million people it takes a lot of running. It's easy to look at a government department or public body and say they're too big or not needed but you need to delve in to what they actually do. Personally I have no interest in "the arts" but recognise that they need to be funded.
