Thanks for the post I must confess I'm not as well informed as yourself when it comes to the machinations of negotiations but as a layperson can only comment on what is apparent to all and that is for what ever reason the new government appears to be hell bent on appeasing the unions those as we all know finance the Labour party , now its the train guards who want the at least equivalent rises as the drivers and with no strings attached such as arise in productivity , you know the normal things that would be negotiated prior to an offer being made. The Government in their obscene haste to settle as become a hostage to yet more demands and this is just the start . Whether as you say it was ineptitude , laziness or what ever else it was with the Torys who knows but the fact remains this next few months is going to cost the tax payer millions if not billions.

You say the new government are hellbent on appeasing the unions, I completely disagree. What we are seeing is the government honouring the recommendations made by the pay negotiating bodies set up to advise on public pay rises. I think it would be manifestly wrong and unjust if the recommendations made by pay review bodies were ignored by the government because they didn’t like the outcome of the pay review process, that happened to the police under Theresa May and in my opinion it was completely and utterly unacceptable as the police couldn’t strike and had no recourse whatsoever. They were stiffed with a pay rise which was less than recommended by the “independent” pay review body.

The previous government had the chance to put parameters in place which would have limited the increases, but they didn’t (for whatever reason) which is why we are where we are.

In terms of the guards, they are employed by private companies and that is down for them to resolve with the various franchises/train operating companies.

We'll see whether there's a rush to more industrial action , why wouldn't there be , there's plenty in the public sector outside the railways who like many haven't had a decent pay rise in a number of years with no ongoing dispute .

Labour were pretty clear in the run up to the election that they intended to quickly solve the pay issues and that’s what they are doing. As the Major said, it’s being done by honouring recommendations by independent boards.

The Tory policy of being nasty to public sector workers while everything broke down in order to gain votes didn’t work.

I’d also add that these awards are going to people whose jobs mean they’re taxed at source mean g a fair whack going back into the public purse.

Very different to those who’s money disappears off shore.

I’m stained by the way the Unions strangled the Callaghan govt
An appalling time in our history which saw Tgatcher sweep into power and shaft millions
History repeating itself really as this govt will do just that

During the winter of discontent, union membership was at about 50%, now it’s about 20.

They’re not as powerful anymore.

Thatcher shafting millions had nothing to do with the unions, she did that all by herself

Under Labour the UK was the sick man of Europe with rising unemployment, terrible public services, record number of days lost to strikes.

Under Thatcher, unions were made democratic, workers had to vote to strike rather than being called out on strike by left wing union bosses. The country boomed with new modern industries unemployment fell and the UK actually started to pay off tye National debt and living standards rose.

It doesn't matter how crackpot a point is on the Internet you will always find something somewhere to back it up, usually by someone with no brains just trying to be argumentative.

That's not like like you to character assassinate instead of debating the points.

Which of those points would you like to contest, if you have even read the article?

Give them a hand and they’ll take your arm.

Labour have dug themselves a very deep grave, which they’re about to be pushed into.
