Buy to Let on the Wane 16:16 - Jul 24 with 2115 views | JACKMANANDBOY | The number of private landlords selling up is increasing and fewer are joining the market, shrinking the private sector rental stock. So the consequences of making if difficult for both good and bad landlords is a reduction in rental properties which are being sold into private ownership reducing the stock and pushing up rents, making it difficult for more people who can not buy. All landlords are bar stewards is part of the populist narrative and is now making things difficult for those who need to rent. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/money/article/2024/jul/22/numbe [Post edited 24 Jul 16:22]

Hopefully with the growth in private new built apartment blocks the "students " will move out of the likes of Brynmill etc into these.at least the detritus created by them would be contained in one area .

Even in a tent some would find a way of ruining it, some don't deserve even a tent.

If people have demonstrated that they are unwilling or unable to respect the fact that they have been provided with accommodation then yes, absolutely. Choices should have consequences.

There was a time when wifey and I were going to enter this market but we’re out off by one landlord who’s comments still resonate . He put the newbie newbies up me We were in a financial position to have bought a house on Leeds when our lad was there for four year in Uni . He didn’t fancy however being de facto landlord to his fellow students . Best decision we made . Him and his fellow students ,left all sorts of crap in their rented houses in Headingley which is like a bigger Brynmill .Its student life apparently .

I put up two young people in my house for a short time earlier this year in order to give them a boost and enable them to find work. The lack of respect they treated my home with (their bedroom and leaving piles of dishes etc ) and staying in bed until all hours, made me glad I didn't rent out my property to their kind. They have returned home to one of the young person's parental home and that lack of respect has been replicated. Also their lack of willingness to look for a job shocks me. I do not believe all youngsters are like this for one minute, but it was an eye-opener for sure

I think that’s a very civic and commendable thing to do - good on you, not many people would do that. Sadly, it seems your generosity wasn’t appreciated and the people in question took advantage. There’s good and bad everywhere and while’s there’s lots of kids out there grafting there’s a large number who want to take out without putting in. I’ve recently spent some time visiting a local food bank trying to assist some of their service users. They all need help which is why they’re allowed to access the food bank ( have to be referred they can’t just walk in) but it’s a right cross section, some (the majority) have fallen on hardship times and need a hand up, but there’s an element who are lazy and just want freebies which is really sad to see, the latter have come from challenging backgrounds. One guy I spoke to was sofa surfing, he told me he wasn’t far off overstaying his welcome with his mate and had acquired a tent so he could sleep in the local park as he’d rather do that than stay at a hostel in a nearby town which was “full of alkies and druggies.” He was a tidy guy, had been working until fairly recently and he was desperately looking for a new job, but he couldn’t get one as he didn’t have an address, -nobody would touch him until he had an address. I felt really sorry for him.

The latter part shows the vicious circle some are in. You need an address to register with Jobseekers club, you cannot get or look for a job as you have no address Plus you cannot (as I used to in my thankfully brief times of looking for work ) just walk in and look.at the board and say " I'll give that a go" Nowadays you have to attend several meetings then sign a contract agreeing you will apply for endless jobs you do not want and will not get in the hope that you get the job you actually want ( and some money in the meantime) The last time I became unemployed was a shock to me as I was told to do all of the above and attend clubs to show me how to apply for jobs ( which I had already perfected long before ) I didn't re attend the Job Centre ( or whatever it was called ), claimed no money, used a sizeable chunk of my late wife and my savings and got a job under my own steam I feel sorry for those who genuinely want to work as it is not made easy for them.
