Record Collectors of the board!! 15:14 - Mar 31 with 6834 viewsSpaceman_P

As I know you guys or at least most of you are all serious music heads.

Question to you guys... any of you also record collectors too? If so how are your collections, what are some of the highlights, holy grails, rarest records/cds etc. Do you have any current on-going collections right now? are you a completist? do you know you're flexi's from your vertigo swirls

Love to know. I am a committed record collector, its quite maddening been buying music since I was 12 years old. I am 38 now, still a huge passion, likely will never stop.

I also have my own record label too, plus make music myself.

IN VINYL we trust (after Marti of course)

Love playing records. All dance stuff, House, breakbeats. Got quite a few rare bits that go for silly money on Discogs but nothing major. Old Skool Hardcore and Jungle go for decent money although there has been loads of represses recently which knocks the value off.
I don't buy just for the sake of collecting, I play all my tunes and love mixing. No idea how many records I have but I'd hazard a guess around 5000. And they're all bangers.. !

Why is it on Discogs that the cheapest records are always “ not available in the UK “

I have two lovely jobs these days. My secondary job is for a care charity but one aspect of our charity is a retro style junk shop with community space.

Have had large selections of vinyls but we got all sorts of weird and wonderful merchandise.

Did have gramophone record player and all 78s so heavy. Loads of old skool vinyl.

Accordion , many type writers , a few hifi systems, even a cello.

My purchase was old stool arcade table machine with pacman, space invaders, track and field and galatians, one of my old favourites.

Lots of flower power clothing items and many many vinyls. A few Polaroid cameras and the odd harmonica.

Vinyls are really back big time

But it's so easy to value things now so the fun of finding a bargain out of nowhere due to inept retail staff is extremely unlikely today.

Used to go to place in Wealdstone that was a greengrocers out the front that had two rooms behind that stocked 45’s in one and 12’s and albums in the other. This was in the days of pirate Kiss and Solar Radio - I can’t tell you how many times this shop came up trumps after hearing something for the first time.

It was run by two very strange men that also used to sell second hand (yes) porn magazines. Naturally, I made my excuses and left.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Second hand meant stuck together

My first two weeks of independent living when went to college were in a gym with 200 put you up beds for all boys who had not yet found suitable accommodation.

So first night, missing home cooking, lads near me chucked me a mag rather used.

Was such a beautiful moment.

Oh the memories !!! Dear oh dear !!!

You couldn’t flick through them like a Green Shields stamp catalogue. That’s what my mate said.

Not sure mate. I usually only go to UK sellers as postage is ridiculous. Although UK sellers tend to value their records higher for some reason.
Facebook has some decent groups for buying or selling.

Occasional providers of half decent House music.

Used to love going in Beanos in Croydon. It was the largest second hand record store in Europe at the time. Sadly the owner closed it down and sold all his stock I believe.

When I lived in Fulham (yeah,I know), I suddenly noticed a second hand record shop had opened at Fulham Cross. I went in bought a few albums and chatted to the owner who had previously worked for the BBC. He said he was looking for a partner in the business. Being a record fan, I was tempted but declined the offer. A few months later it was closed. Maybe today it would have thrived.

I was just about to ask about that shop as I've been going to Eastcote a lot recently as I've been running my dad to and from hospital lately. Have about 250 vinyl albums, decent, but not a lot by some people's standards, and to be fair, nearly half are Smiths/Morrissey. (You can borrow them if you want XTC, I know you're a fan!) Have been finding a lot of the early to mid 90s indie albums go for stupid prices as no one bought vinyl then. Sold a few from then I really regret now. I find there's a lot of chancers on discogs, but if you're patient, you'll get what you want in the end

I’ve been collecting records since I was about 14-15, so nearly 30 years for me now! I used to go to a secondhand place in Eastcote called Sellanby when I first started collecting as I worked down the road on Saturdays, which in turn led me to scouring record fairs uptown. All before the internet took it to the crazy level it is now, although I have found a lot of gaps in my collection on Discogs in the last few years so it’s not all bad!

Always had a soft spot for buying original UK pressings of ‘60’s-‘70’s artists, mainly LP’s (Beatles, Stones, Motown, Stax - my parents influence, basically!) as well as what I grew up on in the ‘90’s (rock, grunge, Britpop). I’ve been through periods of buying up 45’s like they were going out of fashion too! When I lived at home I had a fully operational ‘60’s Dansette in my room so I used to stack up the singles and play them constantly. Heaven!

In terms of gems I’ve got my mum’s original copy of The Who’s My Generation on Brunswick from ‘65, which is worth a few quid nowadays. Another fave is Bob Marley’s Catch A Fire on Island, with the top-opening Zippo sleeve.

Should anyone need it there’s a great place called Covers33 based in Sheffield who cater for all your vinyl extra needs (inner sleeves, repro 45 sleeves, plastic sleeve protectors etc). Always been great to deal with.

oh yes, about 3000 LPs and 12"s and about 1200 7"s, all jazz funk, soul, funk and a bit of House. The most exspensive of the collection are in the 7"s Jan Jones, Detriot Soul, Soulutions, come to mind, but athat changes by the week as I dont keep up with the prices and only see the current prices when I see records I have come up for sale on a few FB pages Im on. Still collecting, next LP to come my way is Another Taste by Another Taste. :)

I used to like collecting 60's white labels especially those with the big A on them for Advanced Copies. Sometimes you would find the matching promo paper sleeves.

I think it was because you could see them in the early photos of the pirate radio stations and even Tony Blackburn opening Radio One. I think they were quite limited in numbers because there wasn't that many locations then that needed advanced copies.

Other than that Beatles black and gold, red and silvers, an Elvis Sun and HMV, Elton Philips but not much else, the occasional Japanese pressing or interesting foreign sleeve such as the Swedish copy of Wings, Jet!

yeah 90s gear (LPs mostly - singles seem to still be affordable) go for stupid prices due as you say to the fact no-one bought them and also due to the fact they weren't produced en mass.

I think if anyone see's 90s gear cheap to buy it as it will only be going up in price.

Northern soul collectors I tend to put into their own category of collector.

Some of the most extreme are soul collectors.... "Is this from 68? nah don't want it". then there are the sub-genre snobs. "this has too much crossover influence" "this is too funk" etc

I had a mate who was a rockabilly collector, for me I do like rockabilly but only 20 minutes worth, I can't hear any subtle differences between tracks.

Discogs ruined record shops. You used to be able to get loads of cheap records in them, as they would slip through unnoticed. Got three early sonic youth 1st press LPs in Oxfam, Ealing for £7 each once. Now they just look at discogs and suddenly, you're paying £50 for the first Portishead album.

This is a pretty obscure album, but this is probably the rarest I own. There's people who claimed it didn't exist as it is so limited. I bought it off someone who reviewed it for a magazine, so suspect it was promo only: https://www.discogs.com/release/8072480-Clockhammer-Klinefelter

Especially if they are sealed. I saw a sealed spiritualized LP go for £355 recently.

I still buy bit of vinyl; mainly to support the artists as they get f'all from the streaming services.

have an extensive CD collection from about 20 years of buying until switching to Spotify for day to day and in car use.

go to loads of live gigs and the vinyl is the extra way to line the artists pockets, mainly soul, jazz and house/dance.

A couple in my collection built up in my yoof, Pearl Harbour Clash, which was the Canadian release of their first album. Had an external sleeve to the cover which was blue instead of green as issued in this country. Also included a 7” of Gates of the West. Also got a coloured 7” vinyl of Dont Cry Wolf by The Damned.
