With you 100% on the first para.
In relation to your second para, I guess it all comes down to how "due diligence" was interepreted at the time, plus, as Clive has alluded to elsewhere, there's always a sense of ego in being to be seen to be the one who managed to tame the wayward child, and turn the frog into a prince..

And when you're shopping at the end of the market we're shopping at, you've got to take some chances.

And as we keep saying, he's playing for QPR for a reason. If Sam Field scored 8 goals from midfield each season, if Chris Willock's hamstrings weren't made of Lego, if Boavista weren't stomping round Europe with a legal binder a mile thick on Reggie Cannon... they wouldn't be playing for QPR. So there's something wrong with everybody here, that's why they're here.

Thinking about this last night, if he is off of work with mental health problems then he won't be receiving his full salary. He should be on statutory sick pay.

If you are an employee, and your mental health makes you too ill to work (For example, you experience an extended period of mania making you unable to work), you will be entitled to statutory sick pay. You are not entitled to any extra sick pay for a mental health condition, even if caused by work-related stress.

That's in the normal world we inhabit though. Different rules in football innit.

Don't think he'd be able to afford his mega shopping sprees or nights in Chinawhites (is that still a thing??) on statutory sick pay

That's not necessarily true.

It'll come down to whatever your contract states.

There'll be a defined period of full pay, and then after that it'll be statutory.

Sorry but I totally disagree with the acceptance of this and have said so forever.

This acceptance that only flawed players can rock up here is another of the absolutely shite standards this club has and a reason why we are in the situation we are in.
It's also a counter intuitive logic that only serves to compound our issues. As I have said in the past I compare this to getting a car......
No point going out and getting a car you know has had issues in the past just coz it looks lovely or used to be a highly desired model, if it's got a poor history you might get lucky and get some great miles out of it but very unlikely. Far better to set your search wider than Gumtree, research, use someone who knows cars if you don't know them yourself and have them on a gain share pain share bonus basis.... also make sure your car is reliable and gets you from A to B rather than a flash and brash number. Once you've got a proven good runner you can, once your situation allows, embellish it should you wish.
A car on the ramps means you're paying for that and then cabs, a hire car or something else and it is a totally false economy.

There are literally thousands of players who could represent this club -- it's not my job to find the ones who tick the boxes but someone within QPR has that role and they are categorically failing and have done for over a decade.
If they don't fit the crib sheet then move on and build a solid squad.
Once you've got that then maybe one or two chances taken on a "maybe" but even then tread carefully.

We have this reputation in the game as a club easily taken for a ride and players like Richards get it easy. How has this happened?

Remember Paul Furlong saying he came here thinking he'd see out his career reasonably laid back and he was shocked at the vitriol he got and realised he needed to up his game and give it 110%... why have our standards / demands as supporters slipped away from that?

I jut dont get it.

I read Norfs post and thought you'd pick up on this.
I just think it's not players not wanting to come here or the right sort of players. As we know money talks with footballers so if we waved a hundred mill about, they'll all be round us like flies.
We haven't got any money to spend (apparently) and we don't have anyone switched on enough to find decent players anyway. Ferdinands time here was pretty crap really but it always comes back to the owners.
We need different bods upstairs.

I think given size of the club etc players who come here with quality will usually have a downside, you can go all the way back to Stan Bowles with his gambling, Adel was a bit of a nutter countless others

Where i do agree with you is that although they will be flawed the club needs a culture and people within in that lets those players thrive and brings the best out of them, put them to high standards so that when they leave the positives outweigh the negatives and they will have made a big contribution to us. The Furlong example is a good one and where you need good pros in the dressing room, back then you had likes of Steve Palmer, Bircham, Gallen, Bignot etc all running through brick walls for the club and calling you out if you didn't, it made the managers job a lot easier as well.

You can't have someone like Richards join with clear problems and 18 months later those problems have got worse and he's contributed nothing, of course the player himself takes a big chunk of the blame for that but if the standards at the club are high he would have either been brought into line of booted out a long time ago

Agree with all of that except the last bit…

How do you boot out a player on a three year deal? Terminate and lose the money anyway?
As others have pointed out he’s turning up for training and available for selection as far as I know so what can you do other than not sign him in the first place?

This isn’t Sports Direct or Uber Eats.

You'd have them out on loan or pay them up, basically not around the dressing room

Hasn't it been accepted that he hasn't turned up to training on occasions and at one point the club didn't know where he was

Either way we do need to terminate his contract as his presence at the club sends a message that his antics are tolerated which isn't a great way of trying to create better standards at the club

Boro bought Morgan Rogers from Man City in the summer and just sold him to Villa. I don't know what they paid for him but you can bet they just made a return on the deal of a size that would completely fix our short term problems.

It can be done.

I think Norf got it right. QPR haven't got the finances to bring in players free of flaws. What you want is to recruit cheap, improve and sell on. No club gets all those right.
There's still no excuse for paying what we did for Richards nor his alleged behaviours since.

I think with Cannon it’s pretty public no? He said he wasn’t paid and so was off, Boavista say they paid him in full and would sue him. The Portuguese FA gave international clearance so obviously didn’t care enough to intervene.
