Just watching the Aussies this morning and saw Aaron Mooy playing, remembering him from his Huddersfield days, and got me thinking about players at the current World Cup who've played at Spotland. Kane and Trippier both played in the 2-2 but is there many others?

Jordan Pickford (Bradford) and Aaron Ramsdale (AFC Wimbledon).
Possibly Harry Maguire with Sheffield United.
Chris Gunter five weeks ago.
Jonny Williams with Swindon last season.
Michael Oliver has refereed at Spotland and Anthony Taylor has lined. Three of their linesman have also lined at Spotland.

Indeed Harry Maguire played for Sheffield Utd against us. 2 others but not at Spotland. Wayne Hennessey played for Stockport in the 2-7 game and Ben White played for Peterborough against us but at London Road.

Harry Maguire also played for Hull against us in the League Cup at the KC Stadium, or whatever it was called then, but I discounted that as it didn't fit the thread title.
When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

This is a bit of a side-track, but something that still annoys me. 16 September 2006 Dale 0 Wycombe Wanderers 2 Referee: Peter Walton. Not one to forget. A shame the Wales V Iran game was on the BBC. If it was on ITV we would have the (ahem) "expert" opinion of so-called referee Peter Walton on the sending off of Wayne Hennessey v Iran for a high challenge well outside the box, chest high, that took the Iran player out. Red card issued on VAR review. At the Dale v Wycombe game mentioned above, a similar challenge by Wycombe's 'keeper occurred, outside of the box, when their goalkeeper tried with a boot, studs up, to cave Morike Sako's chest in. Any normal sized player, he would have kicked their head off. Walton gave a ridiculously soft yellow card and tried to make a case for it in a Daventry newspaper a few days later. Walton is one of the worst ref's I've suffered watching Dale. Loved being the pantomime villain rather than a credible match official. Had a thing about sending Mark Monington off. To ask him for expertise is akin to asking Roger not to be selfish.

Didn't he play for Wigan at Spotland when they brought the 3 Spanish lads over around 98 or so...
Yes, that’s why I mentioned him. He may have played against us for Swansea too. But he’s not at the WC as a player as the OP asked. On the two showings so far he’d get in ahead of Witsel!
