What makes you happy. ? 19:30 - Nov 13 with 5021 viewsSirjohnalot

World can be so dark at times, tough times, winter coming etc.

So I thought I’d ask, have a think, what makes you happy ?

My wife, my dog, like my job, live in a pretty area, and I’m in position where I can look after my parents, mother in law and mates financially if they need it.

Good enough

Let's expand it a bit, to include, what has made you laugh or smile today, no matter how daft

It would be interesting if there was a pre-pandemic version of this thread for comparison purposes. Things that might have either pleased or bothered me until then might not have the same effect now.

Take the Swans for example. Although I wouldn't say that their success or failure would ever dictate my mood entirely, since we were locked out it's hard to claim that there's the same effect. I'm pleased when we win, annoyed when we lose, but the range between the emotions has narrowed a lot. Ultimately, perhaps subconsciously to begin with, I realised that it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

These days quality of life matters a lot more than it did. I'm more likely to try and drop a working day in the near future rather than look for ways to climb the ladder.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Work to live, not live to work.
If you can compress your hours, or better still reduce your hours, and make the most of that extra spare time doing whatever it is you enjoy, then that is a positive step.
All the best with your plans

Cheers dude.

Compression of hours is something I've seriously considered.

Do it if you possibly can, take my word for it life is so much better afterwards. Ask yourself one question, how much is enough.

I’m quite proud that I’m exactly the same now as I was when I was in the Gnoll Primary School. Cheeky, gets away with everything and always very happy

That simple question ‘how much is enough’ totally resonates with me.

I have enjoyed a very satisfying and fulfilled life from a reasonably privileged childhood background despite parental divorce and am extremely proud of the two sons I have nurtured into two amazing young men.

I’ve experienced career success and prosperous wealth yet all I EVER wish for in life is the health and happiness of my two sons.

One of my best mates earns about five times my annual salary, and I've never envied him for a second purely down to the amount of work it can take him to get it.

I've been at Swans games, evening kick offs that he's attended in his office clobber because he's had to go back to work afterwards. Getting home at two or three in the morning because all his work had to be cleared by Jan 31st.

Not for me.

I compressed my hours some years ago and then cut my hours, haven't regretted it.

What makes me happy is England losing, I was fed up of their propaganda as a child watching sport so would enjoy it whenever they lost, had a good couple of weekends of ABE watching recently, watched the Argies beat the English at HQ, that one was going to sting them I know, I watched the second half of Samoa beating England in the rugby league world cup semi final, I didn't watch from the start because England was expected to win by a landslide but when I could see online that not only was Samoa winning but were also the better side I thought hello I have got to watch this - as a side and not a dig England in context are the most sh*t team in rugby league going their record in context is abysmal (nobody plays the game), they have been shockingly bad since the very beginning in that sport.
I didn't watch the T20 final because I thought England would win because they had a good bowler of Zimbabwean stock and a good NZ batter that enabled them to win the match a plus was a Liverpool bookie was offering England at even money in the final (they were 6/10 on apparently) so that was something for nothing (they would only let you put a small amount on, a promotion to get people hooked probably).

Following England's results (wanting them to lose most of the time) just like Wales (wanting them to win all the time) has its advantages as you have an idea when they are likely to win or lose.

Sport is about who you want to lose as much as who you want to win, have you seen the Welsh advert that was banned where different people wearing Welsh, Irish, Scottish, French and Italian shirts were all shouting 'England' then came the punchline at the end of the advert they had been asked who they wanted to lose.

Myself and my wife learned (several years back, maybe 14-15) that happiness is more important, learning to be happy with what you have and making the best of it.

In my new job, the working hours are still 37 but the times and t's and c's are better. I have no ambitions for promotion, my aim is more for a stress free existence with enough time to spend with my family. If we can afford the odd holiday, to go away with the Swans, our season tickets and the odd treat through the year then great. As modest as that will be to some, it's a treasure trove to many others, ourselves included.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

That is a very sad thing to say. We are not at war, we are not betraying a country to the enemy.

That post along with the one that openly states your happiness seems to depend purely on others unhappiness is a very sad thing.

Calling other Welsh people who have a different opinion to you quislings, that is pure childishness. It often struck me as bizarre that many people I have seen post stuff like this would sign us over to the EU lock, stock and not see any hypocrisy or irony in their words.

I hope that one day you can find a happiness that doesnt depend on others misery.

A lot of people know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.
I've always endeavoured to work Monday to Friday and to finish as early as possible. Has a point blank refusal to work weekends set me back monetarily? Probably. But those are hours and minutes that i wouldn't have had doing something I'd enjoy more.

Thinking back to when i was younger I can remember how my old man was there for every single football match I played, meant more than anything of monetary value.

There does seem to be an idea among many that you can either be successful OR happy. I have never seen it as a choice between the two, I have always endeavoured to maintain both.

The higher you go in your profession, the more time you tend to have and the better the perks which translate into better standards of living. For example I have unlimited paid holidays which allows me to go around the world with my now wife on top of the business trips she often joins me on.

Next month I will be in Vegas with my wife before heading to New York for Xmas, all covered due to it being off the back of business trips. So for me, happiness, material goods and professional success doesn’t have to be decided between - it’s all rolled into one happy package.

The more people that adopt that mindset the more fulfilled they will be in both their work life and home life.

Many of us have done this, but with a family it often comes down to, when to "step off" and do the simple things again. I like some others have found over time the money, trappings and possessions mean nothing against doing simple things with family and friends and trying to look after your health. But this thread is about making you happy, I made my decision several years ago and it made me happy, others are still on the treadmill and are happy that's their choice. As I have said before how much is enough, I made my decision and have not regretted it one bit.

I get where you are coming from, but I've always viewed work as a means to an end. It provides the money to pay for things that i actually enjoy.
Having an extra few bob or having a slightly bigger house or better car really mean nothing in my opinion, they don't provide any fulfilment in my life. What does that is spending time with my parents, siblings, partner and daughter.
I suppose that's what makes people different, all are free to prioritise or enjoy whatever they please and if you are happy then that is fantastic.
