75:1 is one too many, it upsets the entire balance. Especially when we're also destroying the parts of ecosystems that could mitigate our impacts.

Nature can and does destroy itself. When was the last time you saw a wooly mamoth strolling around the Gower? But nature also recovers over a few 100,000 years.

The problem is we're tipping the balance far quicker than nature ever has or will, and unless we stop the recovery won't happen.

It's like picking your scabs, don't do it and the skin heals perfectly but keep picking your scabs and you'll leave scars. Polluting our planet and estroying habitats is a scab we keep on picking more and more. We are scarring the planet with our stupidity.

We think we are so much more educated and intelligent than people 1000 years ago but they knew much more about living WITH nature and being sustainable.

Our modern ways of life are not sustainable.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Right, what happens naturally will always happen, it's what mankind does over and above that which is the problem. We need volcanic activity, without it we'd be in trouble,

https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/volcan

Though obviously too much and it's very destructive to everything on Earth.

That doesn't mean we can keep on concreting over nature, we can't keep polluting the seas and sending species extinct.
If we keep on destroying nature, it starts to fight back. Nature is much smarter than the majority of humans will ever be.

Agree about we need to do more it does my head in when fruit is wrapped in plastic for example I refuse to buy

I carry out litter picks at least once a month because basically people are so lazy they just Chuck it absolutely pathetic

I'm all for clean air and clean water, recycling is good too, but this co2 causing climate change is nonsense. The amount that humans put into the atmosphere cannot possibly be making changes

Why not? Co2 either effects the climate or it doesn't and we know it does unequivocally.

Along with other greenhouse gases we emit or effect the natural cycle of.

Absolutely.

The easiest way to think about sustainability is if we can carry on doing that particular activity forever, and I do mean forever, or not.

Can we carry on catching fish quicker than they can be replaced?

Can we carry on chopping down rainforests for agricultural land?

Can we carry on emitting greenhouse gases?

The answer to all of those questions is no, but doing something about it is going to need us to make some sacrifices.

The big effect of CO2 is the acidification of the seas. As a greenhouse gas it’s small fry compared to water vapour and the likes. With the seas becoming more acidic it’s seriously affecting species such as krill and other crustaceans that feast on the oceans algae. Too much algae bloom and the sunlight can’t penetrate and basically everything dies. The whole food chain falls apart.

You're right. Which, in turn, impacts the ocean as a Co2 sink too. Which is why a small addition to the cycle is a problem.

Water vapour is a greenhouse gas but doesn't last particularly long in the atmosphere and we don't add more to the system (edit, directly I mean although warming does in itself) .

Everyone dwells on Co2, including the skeptics, because its the most obvious one and the most inconvenient to do something about. We also need to think about methane and nitrous oxide.

What's the latest on acid rain and the ozone layer , come to think of it also the predictions in 1974 that we were about to enter another ice age ,

Acid rain. We listened to the science and reduced Sulpho Dioxide emissions.

The hole in the Ozone layer. We realised it was caused by chloroflurocarbons so we stopped using them.

Basically we listened to the science because it was relatively easy and cheap to do so.

The moral of the story is that we need to listen to the science.

Cracks me up when people use acid rain and Ozone as arguments against CC when they're two of the most easily proven examples of when listening to science and taking action has been the best option.

There was never a hole in the Ozone layer, it had thinned in places, but has miraculously repaired itself since we stopped using aerosols in the Anatarctic

No doubt. The question is however if the effects are being increased/worsened by human activity.

Personally I'm not sure either way, but I don't see a downside to humanity endeavouring to exist in a less damaging, wasteful and polluting fashion.

No doubt whatsoever, caused by increases in greenhouse gases and usually accompanied by a mass extinction.

We're emitting loads of greenhouse gases and preventing them being absorbed. Do we want to be part of a mass extinction?

Extinction events historically are usually caused by a sudden catastrophe. Whether it’s a meteor or volcanic/seismic activity etc. The probability of that sort of thing happening soon is low. The biggest danger for an extinction event in the nearby future would be a war involving nuclear warheads which doesn’t feel too far away right now.

Tell that to worlds biggest polluters, the UK could ban everything the scientists say is a cause of climate change, and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference.

UK cumulative emissions are about 3% of the world total.

No they're not, they occur over thousands of years, even the Cretaceous / Tertiary extinction took thousands of years to develop. That was caused by a sudden event (a massive meteor hitting the earth).

Most are caused by a change in climate over thousands of years, we're accelerating that process in to 100's of years.

We are experiencing the largest loss in biodiversity ever seen in geological history (Pro rata) over a 100 or so year period. This is a mass extinction event.

Today it appears that the Dugong has been confirmed extinct as a result of pollution, hunting and loss of habitat. The problem is that habitat is sea grass which absorbs massive quantities of Co2 for its mass.

It's not just emissions we need to reduce.
