Crewe Match Thread.. 07:34 - Jul 29 with 24353 views | dale1968 | Thought I would start this early as we KO tomorrow against Crewe at the COA. Think that a top 10 finish is achievable this season whith the signings RS has made over the last few weeks, especially that of Hendo's return to the club. would be great to start the campaign with 3pts and see how we go. 2-0 Crewe with their second chance. Their player cuts in from the right & everything opens up in front of him for an unchallenged shot from 20 yards. Wasn't the strongest shot, but it seemed to wrong foot our keeper

They have just missed a sitter from 6 yards out. Cross from the left, everyone misses it & somehow from in front of goal he misses the ball altogether. Should be 3-0, let's hope its a turning point

Graham has been one of our better players. Crewe should be out of sight but we have come into it in the last 10 mins or so of the first half. Our midfield have got to produce more.

2-0 at HT. Clearly Crewe's half with more shots and the only 2 shots on target going in when we seemed to switch off. Ball has had the only 2 chances for us & missed the target with both. Decent last 15 minutes by us but a lot to do in the second half
Crewe Match Thread.. on 15:55 - Jul 30 with 3613 views | SaxonDale | Don’t think I’ve felt so pessimistic 45 minutes into a season. Ball and Kelly look lost in this system and there’s a real noticeable lack of pace- players look like they’re struggling to cover the ground. We’ve got experience throughout the team but some of the passages of play have been incredibly poor and we’ve had no real control. Worrying to say the least.
Crewe Match Thread.. on 16:00 - Jul 30 with 3540 views | Cedar_Room | Thought we were the better team until they scored and then it just all went wrong. They could easily have had 3. No ideas going forward. Liam Kelly especially useless. Very much same problems as last year this doesn’t feel like we have moved forward at all.

Not seen any of the previous posts write us off? Just accurate assessments of a very poor first half.

Not writing us off by any means but 45 mins in and some things haven't changed. We can't defend set pieces. We're completely disorganised. Our forward line is completely isolated. Our midfield is non-existent, Kelly especially poor. We're set up defensively to not concede and we should be 3-0 down at half time.

Not writing us off but after that performance people are entitled to be critical. Of course Crewe will be a decent team (despite what previews of League 2 say) due to the quality difference between league 1 and 2. Anyway hopefully we come back second half to win 3-2 [Post edited 30 Jul 2022 16:05]

Who's writing us off? Just mostly commenting what a poor first half it was, do you disagree?

Finished 2-1 Crewe The most frustrating part of the game for me was the first goal. How many do we concede from set pieces compared to how few we seem to score from them? 15 minutes into the first game of the season with a box full of defenders and no-one attacks the ball. Some good performances from Seriki, Odoh & Diagouraga, the latter could be a good find for us in midfield. Defence was decent but too powderpuff upfront in spite of a lot of endeavor. Unfortunately we said that a lot last season. Early days so not going to get too down, but an annoying defeat to start the season Robbie - sort out defending set pieces FFS !! For his obvious ability he doesn’t stand out enough and he adds very little on a consistent basis. Jury is out on Ball as well, we need something else in midfield. Strange game because we did defend quite well in the main bar the goals, which obviously means we didn’t! Graham was fine, both wing backs did well and Diagouraga best of the midfield. The subs left us a bit flat when we were on top, Rodney hadn’t had the greatest game but he’d just scored and we immediately lost a physical presence up there. Be interesting to hear Stockdale’s thinking about those moves when he’s presumably asked after the match.

Not sure about Diagouraga, for the most part I thought he looked tentative and clumsy but he did improve as the game wore on. Can we afford to accommodate him and Ball in the same midfield? Better second half without ever finding any sustained pressure to get back in it, I wish Charman was introduced sooner though Rodney took his goal well.
Crewe Match Thread.. on 17:23 - Jul 30 with 2686 views | EllDale | Two poor goals conceded early on holed us below the waterline. Shocking marking for the first and could O’Donnell have done better with the second? I know we’ve been shoddy from set pieces for years but today think that RS, as an acolyte of Big Sam, should be able to Improve marking. We were really rattled for 15 minutes after that. People are already on Kelly’s case but to my mind Ball was no better or worse. Nelson looked an imposing figure when he came on although George had done little wrong. I don’t think we’ll see much of Taylor on this evidence.

Agree about Ball. I do think he’s got something about him in the final third; he should have scored today though. However he doesn’t seem capable of playing the system asked of him today. Defensively he was at fault for the second and seemed like he struggled to cover the ground asked of him. Almost seems like Stockdale signed Ball knowing he was a decent player and then thought about where to play him later. Something which seems to have happened a few times.

Kelly & Ball weak in this system - missing someone to knit the play and move us up the field

Couldn’t believe he took Rodney off just after he scored. Not that Rodney had had a great game but once you’ve scored haven’t you earned the right to see if you can score another?? Would have thought the better move would have been to save Hendo’s legs and take him off A pretty poor performance overall. Really lacking creativity in midfield. Odoh had more attacking presence than most but there’s still something frustrating about how he doesn’t capitalise on the positions he finds himself in. Ball missed probably the best 2 chances. I agree about Diagouraga being clumsy - thought he looked solid but also made silly mistakes. Kelly was poor and looks too small and lightweight for this division. Especially against a team like Crewe who seemed to muscle us off the ball fairly easily. Up front I’m not sure anyone worked - Hendo was anonymous for most of the game but so was everyone else. I would hope that the starting XI from today will not be the starting XI against Gillingham. Perhaps a few tweaks and we can get a team who can perform much better but from this performance it doesn’t look like much has changed at all from last season and this is going to be another long hard slog. Few reasons for optimism today.
