I would guess they were what today's snowflakes and Daily Mail readers would call Communists, I think famously the first song Shankly knew was the red flag and on checking Busby and Stein they did actually go down the mines.

Trampie, Trampie, Trampie: Sir Matt Busby was hardly a communist now, was he? Big Jock was, as far as I know, apolitical.
Bill Shankly? He was certainly a pretty outspoken advocate of collectivism, but he was famously averse to anything and everything foreign. That’s your grandpa’s Labour that is. That’s Gracie Fields, John Wheatley and steamed pudding not balalaikas , Biryukova and borscht.
