The County Durham official will be taking charge of a Swans game for the third time this season, having had the whistle for the opening-day defeat at Blackburn and the away win at Barnsley. Huddersfield Town v Swansea City : Matchday Thread 21/22 AFTERMATH ! on 21:14 - Jan 15 by Bobblehat | You may think it’s a formation/system flaw, me personally it’s to do with players being to slow on the ball and making wrong Choices I.e Ben Hamer being closed down because he’s taken to many touches. 🤷ðŸ»â€â™‚ï¸ |
Players are slow on the ball because where most teams will have fullbacks open for passes, our wingbacks are 40 yards upfield looking in the other direction. It's difficult to play short passes when players aren't in space, and we set up to make the playing area as small as possible, cramming lots of bodies into what would in a normal team be the centre of midfield. Most of our play goes through 5 players you could throw a blanket over in the first half. There is logic to it. By forcing teams to narrow and pushing the wingbacks on we create those pockets of space out wide for Paterson to drop into. But it's difficult to exploit those spaces and create goalscoring opportunities. You can be waiting for the moment of magic. In theory having lots of bodies around the ball should make us better at recovering it (see the swarming tactics of Man City, Barca etc.). Nonetheless we are very vulnerable on turnovers, with centre halves struggling when trying to race back towards their own goal from 10 yards inside the opposition half. I know how tempting it is to say "our players are shit, just get better ones" but the system contributes to these performances. It's a difficult system to play successfully. And it's not a given that it can be successful. 45 minutes here and there is not sufficient proof of concept. [Post edited 15 Jan 2022 22:33]

From what I hear we didn’t play the same in the second half. We moved the ball directly and quickly. Is that true? Because you just agree with Dwight? We are completely incapable of playing the way he wants us to for 90 mins and be successful. It’s beyond most teams in the Premier League let alone the Championship. We haven’t won in 5 games and find ourselves a touch above the relegation zone. You sound like there is living proof this works? [Post edited 15 Jan 2022 22:45]

Don’t be so daft. What on earth makes you think posters don’t want us to play well? Just because they criticise when we don’t play well, which is perfectly natural. I think some people need a reality check and take stock of where we are. The complains were, are and will be justified regardless of what changes in the future. That’s something you will have to learn to accept. We have earned 1 point in the last 4 league games. Think about that. [Post edited 15 Jan 2022 22:47]

Only time will tell if it’s a flawed system. At this moment in time it’s been a mixed bag, some very good performances, some very poor performances and some individual errors. We are desperate for a quick centre half that knows how to defend and comfortable with the ball at his feet under pressure.

Time has already shown it to be a flawed system. 19th and 13th for MK Dons and 17th for Swansea. Individual errors will always happen in this system, like they did with MK Dons - it’s a product of the system and nothing to do with the notion of unlucky errors, which seems to be the narrative. If you pass the ball around the back for 90 mins YOU WILL give it to the opposition, it’s not an error - it’s an inevitability.

We've played half a season. It's not too early to draw conclusions about the system Martin has used since he arrived. You point out one of the key issues - we're desperate for a complete centre half with pace, who is comfortable stepping into midfield and defending 1v1 against specialist wide players. Those are very difficult to find, not cheap, and rarely stay at this level for long.

"We are desperate for a quick centre half that knows how to defend and comfortable with the ball at his feet under pressure." Absolutely. The question is, when such a player becomes available, how will we outcompete Manchester City and the other elite teams in world football for their signature?

Aye, a central midfielder that can ping accurate 50 yard passes and go past players with ease and a couple of wingbacks that can outpace the opposition and deliver wicked pinpoint crosses all game would be nice too… if we are doing wishful shopping lists. If Carlsberg did realistic transfer windows.

So unless you’re Man City you can’t sign a half decent centre half! Right ok I get you, you won’t be happy until we can compete with Man City. Ffs.

Nathan Ake is a decent centre half. Being fast and comfortable with the ball at his feet is why he cost £50,000,000.

You can sign a decent one sure, but if you want the type you are looking to get then they cost a lot money and are highly in demand. Would seem unlikely a team at the bottom of the Championship would get a look in for an affordable price. What do you mean I won’t be happy until we can compete with Man City? I’m more than happy playing a sensible style of play that suits our players in this league and maximising what we can get out the team. It sounds like you want to compete with Man City, not me.

Not at all. This is sadly what happens when people take 45 mins of football and try telling fans they were wrong to criticise the last 6 months. I’m afraid the conversations will move away from that 45 mins and focus on the reason for the criticism… which is the last 6 months. If people could only be happy with the half and not look to argue with others then there would be no arguing, sadly the slightest glimmer of good performance and the line becomes long for those who bizarrely want to pretend that this is how we have played since the start of the season and those criticising were unreasonable. Great, sounds like we had an excellent 45 mins. Let’s win a couple of games first before people start picking fights.

Again not quite. We have a flawed system, absolutely. We have seen that. We have a manager that the jury is still out on, he needs to learn what works and what doesn’t. We are in an awful position in the league in comparison to our squad talent. It’s unrealistic to expect premium signings when we reportedly have limited funds and find ourselves down the bottom of the league. Signing quick ball playing centre backs that can step into midfield and calmly evade the press isn’t something that is easily attainable. If there is one of them available then it’s very likely someone better than us will be in the queue with more money to offer. This is just realism, no point in talking in wishes. If we get one then superb, unlikely though isn’t it.

We did yes, but we had a manager with a reputation for developing young players and were a side looking for promotion. This season we are having loan players taken off us to give to better teams in our division. Ask Rhys Williams and Ethan Laird. Do you have any names in mind? [Post edited 15 Jan 2022 23:47]
