A link?

Martin has said they players played not to his instructions and has since said both Pato and Piroe were not on board with the way he wanted to play. I would imagine they weren’t the only two, it was a ludicrous way to play.

Since then there seems to be some sort of compromise and we are playing far more sensibly. More akin to what we wanted him to play at the start, hence the criticism, and hence why he is now getting praise.

No player on show? What on earth does that mean?

You are confusing yourself now.

Full credit goes to the manager and players for changing what clearly was not working, or going to work.

It's a shame some are finding it so hard to give that credit.

Says he who tried to rewrite history when you stated in a post re MArtin "pushing" Tate out as he didnt match his philosphy just as Cooper pushed our Curtis and Britton

Despite the fact Britton had long departed the club and Curtis retired whe n he was 65 in April 2019 well before Potter left....and despite the fact Curt and Britts were instrumental in Coopers appointment......

Hows that for twisting the facts?

Then you should look in the mirror and start directing the praise at those who called the need for this change very early, and also give Martin and the players the credit they deserve for doing so.

Practice what you preach, old fashioned fella.

I think It's more a refusal to admit others were right. They entrenched themselves in the ''we should not change and we should trust plan A'' camp.

The sensible among us were clear that it's all well and good to play a possession game but we have to go long when we need to, we have to be more direct and we have to rely on a mixed style not just a short passing one. It was too easy to defend and we created nothing as a result.

That has now happened and we look far better for it.

I can't help them with that.

A refusal to admit others were right!!

Indeed, it should be very easy for you to acknowledge that the ones calling for a more direct approach with mixed passing, without the damaging focus on short balls in every situation were correct all along.

But I cant imagine you ever doing so. That's your choice.

Doesn't bother me personally.

What’s my guess?

There’s been nothing drastic about it, just players buying into a new system and improving with proper coaching. Piroe has said it, Kory has said it, Martin has said it, black and white or you can even listen to them speak if you’d prefer.

There’s two people suggesting player power, one of them hasn’t been to a game in god knows how long and the other is still busy trying to convince people he’s played at a “high standard” to take on board. Anyway, I’ve said several times, judge what you read, by where it has come from, and no offence, a man scorned, isn’t the one to trust

Your guess that the players had nothing to do with the drastic change of passing style. I happen to think the most likely scenario is a compromise between all.

''Buying into it'' is just a soundbite, it doesn't actually mean anything at all. Buying into something doesn't mean short balls at all costs become long balls and mixed passing. It's a distinct change.

Who changed it isn't important, the fact it clearly has - is.

If you don't think it has changed, then got on board with my 4% challenge. You will be the first participant, which should be surprising considering those insisting the style hasn't changed. Should be a tap in for anyone who genuinely thinks there has been no change.

However, surprising it most certainly isn't and instead entirely expected. Nobody with an ounce of a footballing brain would agree to it, because it clearly will never happen again now the style has changed.

But it remains open in hope...

I have no idea what you are talking about with this 4% stuff sorry, barking up the wrong tree. What I see is a team playing their way out from the back, keeping possession in winning situations as we did against WBA, not Bristol as Martin said, pressure was on and we reverted to type, that seems to have been coached out of the players now and that’s great news for all of us who go to the games.

<<I’m convinced the players made it clear in no uncertain terms>> that’s a soundbite, off someone who is scorned as I said in previous post, and you’re correct, it means nothing, due to where it’s come from.

I have explained that already, prior to the change we saw multiple games with 4% long ball composition, meaning we went short 96% of the time. A ludicrous system.

Since the change, our wins have harbored a 12.5% average composition of long balls as we become more direct and far less reliant on short balls, the change is obvious to anyone with eyes.

So my offer to anyone genuinely trying to claim the system hasn't changed is a friendly bet for pride. I say we will never see another game that comprises of 4% or less long balls again, despite seeing multiple so far this season. You only need 1 to win, if nothing has changed then it would be a guaranteed win.

Your latest ''scorned'' and ''where it has come from'' nonsense is just that I am afraid, nonsense. I will continue ignoring such guff.

Take the bet or I am afraid I simply do not believe that you honestly back anything you type. You are just following the anti Dr P crowd as you usually like to do, except I'm always proven correct so you have been quiet recently to be fair to you.

It seems this one has snared you though, make the most of it. Make the bet.

Why would I have any interest in that bet? What is a “long ball” classed as? Those switches to the wingback on Wednesday for example?

Everyone has seen how we play, sky made a point of showing we are leading the way in pass stats, the athletic made an article of our game explaining the contrast in styles between us and WBA for example “beauty against the beast” I’m sure I read.

I know what I have watched, I know the improvements I have witnessed, that’s enough for me. I called you out for your comments indicating there was player power involved with our results improvement, I’ve done that, everything else you’re going about I find irrelevant, no offence.

Because you think there has been no style change, the long ball will be classed the same as it was earlier in the season, there is no change of critieria.

If there has been no change of style we should see many games with 96% short passing. I am saying we will see zero, none, zilch, nada.

Taking it? Ill update after every game.

Lets try and settle this "dispute" and then maybe we can all move on and enjoy the succesful entertaining football we have now got based on the last two matches.

The Plan A comes form the media it was picked up by WOL following an interivew MArtin gave last March following a 4th loss in 5 games and giving away a goal though passing out.

https://trainingground.guru/articles/russell-martin-people,-purpose-(and-possess

In this Martin talks about how his short passing game see below
I felt the point they (the journalists) were getting at was to stop passing. 'Get a big striker on, get it in the box.' I kept getting asked about it, which is why I went really strong.

It was about making sure the players knew that I really believed in them doing it this way and that the people outside the group - the fans, the board - knew this is how we’re doing it.

There isn't one way of playing, that wasn’t the point I was getting to. We have a Plan A because we really believe in it. There’s going to be pain, because it’s a big change and a lot of the players haven’t played this way before, but if we really believe in it and enjoy the process, let’s stick with it.

I said that if I get sacked at least I will do it doing it my way and I’ll be comfortable with that. Plan B suggests doing it completely differently. If you watch our team, we tweak it all the time - we change the formation, we change the way we do things in certain games depending on the opposition - but we are passing the ball a lot, we are trying to dominate possession.

We had the most touches in the opposition box in the league last season, but we didn’t always turn that into good chances and conceded too many early goals, so we worked on that and it stopped happening towards the end of the season.

Wales on Line picked up on this at the time we were approaching MArtin

In fairness he talks of tweaks but he is insitent on not putting long balls into the box.

Im sure the good Dr P can find the stats to back up the claim that our use of the long ball has increased...since the start if the season.....
IT would seen that is so when I have watched back over previous games sad git that I am...

In fainess our recent goals have resulted form long balls , the 3rd on Sunday Piroes goal on Wednesday

We can spend hours argueing this one to death.....but from this interivew it does seem that MArtin has a focus on short ball passing with an aim to control possesion.

He succeeded in this at MKDons he ahs achieved this here as many point out we top the table for posssion but et where are we in the league?
Who is second in that table ? sheffield Utd where do they sit in the league?

SO is this possesion stat significiant ? Who tops the EPL posssesion table and who tops the league?

Look at MArtins statement in that podcast

"We had the most touches in the opposition box in the league last season, but we didn’t always turn that into good chances and conceded too many early goals, so we worked on that and it stopped happening towards the end of the season."

That was 17 months after he taken charge .....so how much time did he need?

Im sure we could apply that statement to the majority of his ghames in chagre here.

He has "tweaked" but a big tweak .....maybe he is learning after all thats what we all do...succesful managers do it in all walks of life ...

Good post vetch but can I just add that most of the long balls we play under RM actually go to a swans player but under cooper they mostly went down a channel for lowe or ayew to chase valiantly.

I think that RM has better players to work with here than at mk dons so perhaps that's why it seems to have clicked earlier.

As you say let's just enjoy the minor success we are enjoying until it starts going wrong, then we can get on each others backs again.

Let's hope that doesn't happen for a while 😁👍

Lets put this to bed...and lets start enjpying the success....while it lasts as at our next defeat this will all kick off again .....

Fantastic post. Bang on the money.

The long ball introduction has been drastic as you touched upon. Culminating in the last game where we had our highest of the season (14.6%). Since the Luton game it has been consistently around the 12% or 13% mark, which was similar long ball composition we saw last year, just a touch under.

Prior to Luton we were seeing 7% and 4%, prior to Bristol City we were seeing 6% and 7% typically. Just ridiculous numbers really, which is what the complaints were regarding.

Pass number and possession has steadily declined too, and has correlated with better results because we are being more direct and actually doing something with the ball. Not messing around with the opponents high press by ego stoking short passes, we now knock it long as many of our goals recently show (Downes to Laird for the third goal against Cardiff being a prime example).

Martin came here expecting to be able to implement his short ball passing at all costs game, he wasn't able to. The Championship is far too good a standard not to punish the inevitable errors that come with it.

We are now starting to consistently see double and even triple the long balls we were seeing at the start where there was clear instruction to never go long regardless of situation.

That is what the complaints were about. That is what has changed. This is why we are now winning.

Not sure why people can't acknowledge the obvious, be happy and move on.

Of course you have no idea what I am typing about......iys common practice with you when it's pointed out that you are contradicting yourself.

The instructions today are the same from day 1, it's only working because the players are now starting to follow it and it's registering after the time that was told to you and others was needed..... Patience as stated a million times!
As of this, we are playing better and getting results. Making lies about disagreements between Martin and players is a cheap shot to prove you correct and that Martin's style that you rubber stamped as his style after just 2 weeks was not working... We all said it needed time and now that has been proven the case you are as usual twisting it.

I stopped after reading " I have absolutely no idea " that summed him up to me.
The guy is a clown, I dont know why people bother playing his games, I think its sad really the amount of time he spend on this site trying to provoke people so he has something to do with his boring life, he comes across as the type of bloke a parent would tie a pork chop to so that the dog would play with him.

Pork for God's sake. Have you no sense at all

On a positive note,I like Pork Loin although not sure that could be seen as a exual reference and thus offensive for some flowers that are easily offended on the part of others.
