Warburton subs on 01:38 - Aug 22 with 2078 views | bob566 | I feel like you. I was cursing at thomas and dozell. But you have to give the squad a chance. It backfired. Not so worried for thomas as he was played out of position but dozell got his chance and looked like a rabbit in the headlights. Not writing him off yet but he was awful today and ok at best v orient. Boy needs a hug from warburton. Brave mgt from warburton to hook them both early
Warburton subs on 11:11 - Aug 22 with 1905 views | TacticalR | On the commentary Andy Sinton and Nick London were saying that making subs early is completely out of character for Warburton. Maybe he is more confident/decisive now that he has been at the club for a while.

Warburton subs on 11:57 - Aug 22 with 1830 views | LazyFan | Adomah, Ball and Dunne all did great. Warbs had the sense and guts to see his tactics were all wrong and change it super quick. This is elite management. That gave all of the players (not just the subs) time to change formation and adjust to the Barnsley press. As we can see, even if you get it correct it still takes time to get 2 goals from it. So, the earlier you do it the better chance you have. Masterstroke from Warbs and Eustice. Also, the fact it worked means Warbs won't be afraid to try it again. And you can only do that if you have recruited in all positions replacements so, you can adapt like that. Thus this is also possible down to great recruitment over the past 2 seasons (as that's how long it takes). We learned quite a few things from this game: - Kakay cannot play LB, but is just fine at RB. - Dozzell has the right idea, but is way off the pace and needs way more coaching. The difference between League 1 press and Championship press caught him out. He can and will get better. Dozzell cannot play the DMC role like JoJo, Field, Amos or Ball. - Thomas played in a preferable position for him and failed to deliver. I noticed many times he was 1 on 1 with the fullback and went backwards, whereas old man Adomah went at his fullback. Thomas imho is not gonna cut it at this level and can see him going out the door in Jan. - Adomah can be effective against average defences in this league and for 60 mins. Therefore he could possibly start some games if we need him to and is a very effective impact sub if we don't. - JoJo needs a DMC player around him to allow him to go forward and drop in between the oppo midfield and their defence to be impactful in the game. JoJo cannot play in defence. - Ball makes some silly mistakes, but is actually most of the time consistent in the tackle and defensive positioning and as Warbs said can take control of midfield for you. He will also drop into defence if needed like Field did last season. Though Ball needs a player like JoJo around him to take the football into the oppo's half and hold it in their half. Ball cannot really do this and when asked to, often it goes wrong. - Dunne is quality and people get upset here about the mention of Dickie being sold and Dunne as a replacement. But I would rather have that option, than the club spending money on someone we don't really know will step up. With Dunne around it's okay to let Masterson go on loan, as if we get desperate either Ball can also play there or Field when he returns. - Dickie needs a rest, he's knackered. - de Wijs cannot play 3 games in a week, his body cannot take it. He will now probably be out longer than one game we could have rested him for. - Barbs can play LB if we are desperate, this is a useful option instead of Kakay being forced there which does not work. - Chaz is not fit, but useful. Though this is not enough. We need to find out what Kelman can do or get another forward in. - Dykes we need back as even if he's off form, we can bring him on to help change the game as he presses from the front which helps us win the ball, just like Barnsley did to us in the first half. - Bettache we should have delayed the loan, I bet he would have been able to play LWB better than Kakay. Or been more effective than Thomas or Dozzell in that game. Let's hope he plays loads there and improves as we may need him back sooner than we think. - Amos & Field, we need these two back as if Ball gets injured, we have no real replacement. It's not that Ball is amazing, it's just that we are short on DMC players with those two out. I know Amos is better as an attacking player, but he can play the DMC role if needed. - Chair & Willock, if either of these two get injured we would be in trouble. We need therefore a quality playmaker to come into the squad just in case. That should be the last signing, someone with the pace to stretch the game. Last season we would have lost to Barnsley and we did! The great thing about this game is Warbs got it totally wrong, fixed it, the players were available to fix it, played to fix and it worked. This means if we are careful with our fragile squad we have a chance at the playoffs as we seem to score loads now and are hard to beat even when you go 2-0 up against us or we have 10 men. Make mistakes like that against Fulham or WBA and we shall not recover, it's only against the lesser sides can we get away with that.

Charlie not match fit, but pretty close! He got a knock v Millwall after 10 mins, so needs to get "match sharp" as he said on the offy. 4 chances , 1 goal and still people carp on about him - Kelman - not his fault, needs more than a 'bit of coaching' to get in the same universe as Charlie, let alone on the same planet. Rest of it I agree with, you'll be relieved to know!
