Not sure any of our players should be allowed to give non-QPR interviews like this - especially to gutter media like Talksport - and also think it's disrespectful... (some could say ironic too considering the United player has played exactly the same amount of top flight matches as Austin despite being 9 years younger... )

Thoughts?

80's Boy,

Apologies - I down-voted you by mistake.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Austin doing media while playing for us. Ray Wilkins did. But then Ray Wilkins was a gentleman. Charlie Austin could learn a lot from how Ray presented himself and represented us.

Ha ha, no worries!

It's not ok for Todd Kane to slate a team-member in public, but it's ok for Austin to slate a fellow professional in public.

I am not bothered, but when MW talks about respect, surely it should apply to the whole squad.

To follow this through then, where does "respect" start and end?

Does it apply on the field too, or not? Are we now saying our players shouldn't be making "professional fouls" because it disrespects the spirit of the game?

Are we expecting our players to hold their hands up if they win a penalty by diving, and tell the ref "No, reverse your decision"? Or perhaps pass the ball wide of the goal from the penalty spot?

Would we really be dreadfully upset as a fanbase if we won the FA Cup in May against Chelsea because Charlie dived to win us a penalty in the last minute?

Either we are consistently above reproach (as a club, as players, as fans, as individuals) or we are not. I don't think you can choose your moments.

Mountain out of a mole hill here... Maybe a quiet word asking him to be a little more mindful when speaking about other players directly, other than that get on with it.

If it wasn't about a Man U player the clickbait titles wouldn't be splashed about and nobody would give a toss.

Let's get on with the quiz.

I agree it is all about context. Which is why his sharp opinion of Saints as a bombed-out former Saints player is more justified (though still unprofessional) than a targeted drive-by slating out of nothing.

It is also all about context that TalkSport profit from having engineered the aberrant situation of a currently active pro publicly having "just an opinion" like you, me and Joe Bloggs.

Struggle to believe you sincerely can't fathom the difference between the two statements you offer and why this is getting the attention it was constructed to get.

how was it out of nothing? He was part of a discussion on what Man Utd need to be title contenders and he offered an opinion that they could do with a new right back. I'm struggling to understand the problem to be honest.

The Kane/Kakay thing is slightly different as it was about a team mate.

The Kane/Kakay thing is completely different and the reference of comparison with Barton is laughable too. Preachy indignation is the specialism for some posters though...

Great reply Watford and really we don't disagree too much. It's probably is a bit of a storm in a teacup and I for one have waaay to much time on my hands today. Last week we were baking in 30 degrees and I was complaining about the heat, today it was 14 degrees and pi$$ing down.

I suppose the only point I'm making is that we tend to take a more lenient view of the actions and comments of the players we love and how valuable they are to the team. We all love Charlie, but he lives on the edge both by his actions and words. I think he is much more controversial than he was the first time he was here. Whether that is a deliberate ruse to get into media punditry, I don't know.
Kane was unpopular even before 'interviewgate; and then his ban has compounded people's dislike for him. I honestly thought he did a decent job at wing back, but I am in the minority. I hope Moses works out, because Kakay is not (yet anyway) a promotion -chasing standard defender.

As for Stan, we share a mutual love for the man, but it was a different time and you could say what you like. I remember him slagging off some Everton defender saying his first touch was so bad, his second was a header!
Funny how we have to be so careful nowadays about what we say, yet get behind a keyboard and it's a free for all.

Cheers Myke, I'd certainly agree about the teacup!

Re Charlie, he's certainly not and never going to be a diplomat. I remember him a few seasons back while at Southampton in a post match interview where he'd had a goal incorrectly disallowed giving both barrels with absolutely no diplomacy whatsoever to the officials. I'd be much more disappointed with him getting banned for a period for a stupid and deliberate late challenge like he did last season, because it might affect us and lose us points. It's his football contribution to QPR I'm interested in, and as long as he's not doing anything to limit that, he can say what he likes, as long as it's decent and legal.

Kane I felt lost far more support through the interview than through the Brentford incident imo. Neither cast him in a good light, or presented him as a particularly bright guy. If that's not too disrespectful!

Did I want a personal life like Stan's? No. Did I want the attention he got from the press for it? No. Will the football he graced us with remain in my memory forever as a shining source of joy? I certainly hope so.

AWB's merits or lack thereof have been a hot topic his whole career. It's simply disingenuous to pretend there aren't a million easier and more nuanced ways to express this scintillating insight less personally and less polemically.

It's so weird to bend over this far backwards just cos we like Charlie.

if you think it's weird, i don't think you know much about football fans?
If a player is rubbish and won't leave because he's on a good contract, he's a leech bleeding the club dry.
If a player is a good player, and decides to hand in a transfer request, he's a b'stard and a mercenary for not honouring his contract.
If you have come to football for rational thinking, you're in the wrong place.

Bare bones.

Okay, it's weird but not abnormal.

If I could help being fascinated why grown arse men act like k-pop stans I'd have just posted "he's not gonna shag u m8" fifty times already.

Not saying and never have said it's a big deal sackable offence but it's plainly and deliberately rude and improper as footballer waffle goes. Can leave it there if that's too blood boiling.

no i agree with you. i just don't think it's a weird response from fans to back a player they love. you only need to look at the number of fanboys barton generated on here to see that.

Bare bones.

not sure anyone is bending over backwards over this, I've not heard the full show but the clip i viewed he said AWB offered less going forward and forwards would prefer someone like Trippier delivering crosses. Also when pushed said he can't defend which I wouldn't really agree with but is nothing too shocking. Roy Keane says far worse about players.

I get why Man Utd fans are up in arms as they are defending their player but I genuinely don't see an issue with what Austin has said. It's not hugely different to anything he said in podcasts and radio show's last season

Correct: we have some very precious supporters who are easily offended by lots of things.

I'm not sure anyone has expressed opinions which suggest they are offended to be honest.

Questioning his professionalism and class are not on par with being offended.

I think it's more of a promotional tool with a view to establishing himself in other media ventures further down the line (presumably not TV punditry if he's going to be as blunt as this).

A few months ago I asked an acquaintance who works in radio (not with/for TalkSport) what the ballpark Austin might be getting for this gig and they thought maybe £150 an appearance, max...

Crikey, if a 150 quid a week bung at Talksport on top of his wages was enough to have him wear the hoops, I'd happily pay him myself!

Charlie, you know that we love you at QPR and we know you speak plainly. But, please don't embarrass us. My parents' generation used to say 'If you can't find something nice to say about someone, then perhaps you should say nothing at all.' That approach does little harm.

It also makes for a very boring life.

I listen to TS a bit these days on the drive to work - only 25 mins and the breakfast show isnt bad - when Brazil and McCoist aren't giggling like schoolgirls for about 18 mins of said drive.

However when Troy Deeney was on I did think I don't want a QPR player doing this, now Charlie is I get it as he sees a future in this way and surely going back to London is a way to make this easier, but it comes with it's issues.

presumably the club has no problem with Charlie doing this, but if we make enough noise about it we can piss someone off and cause a problem where there was none!
