Ashes thread 17:11 - Jul 15 with 110253 viewsjohnhoop

Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event.
For me the most interesting questions about team selection are;
1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me.
2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood.
3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make.
Any thoughts?

Sadly I think you’re right, get Smith in first hour and it’s england test (I’m stating the obvious I know)

England let Australia score far too quickly yesterday eve, what on earth has happened to Moeen? Michael Vaughan seems to think he struggles with stress and pressure, not good for an international cricketer

He needs time away. Suprised he made the team. After the last Ashes in Oz I never thought we'd see him again.

I think that this is all a bit alien to Moeen, whether it's the pressure or the atmosphere or whatever it is, he hasn't been good for a long time has he? I think that we'll have to bowl them out without him and Anderson, the way it's going. We do have plenty of options though, even without those two. We've just got to find a way.

On a (band) point of order, we've got Radio and TV at the crease at the moment.

This is slipping away from England

Ali bowling very poorly and clearly lacking confidence. Need a wicket badly

Yep. With no Anderson and Moeen not doing great with the ball we have Denley bowling spin. Looking a bit desperate. Didn't get enough of a lead first innings I'm afraid.

Australian batsmen doing exactly what they should be doing, not looking good for England at all.

Just read on TMS that we’re ninety minutes into the session and Woakes hasn’t yet bowled a single ball. Either he’s injured as well or a Root is displaying a quite exceptional level of incompetence. Meanwhile the Aussies are rapidly accumulating a score that’s going to be well beyond England.

Stokes gets Head caught behind with a pretty average delivery - Head will not be happy. But it's Smith we need to get out.

Head will be even less happy when he finds out it was a no ball from Stokes - the umpires checked and didn't notice!

You're talking Stokes' back foot? No, just saw a load of slow-mo and it was ok.

Proper test match batting by Woakes and Broad has put England into a much better position. You don't have to smash every ball to the boundary - it's about accumulating runs.

I’m a day late to this back and forth but I’m w anti on this one. Batters who have the ability to play shots should be free to try to hit bad deliveries for boundaries . If the ball is that far off stump at that length, stokes should go for it... if instead you constantly push and prod, you give Australia license to set up a hyper aggressive field w the spinner

Ironically, you say woakes and broad were batting in the proper test way but woakes slog swept for a six. Can’t always judge by the outcome

what a terrible morning. If Woakes is not injured then Root should be sacked for not bowling him in the session. Terrible bowling from Ali, terrible field placings all morning, no energy and even if we took the last 6 wickets for 0 and had to chase 142 to win I would not be confident.
Aussies always do well at Lords... we could be 2 down and staring down the barrel very very quickly... and this after having them on the ropes at 122/8 on day one.

am i missing something about his form? he was pretty handy in the west indies series and im pretty sure he took the most wickets.

i dont particularly rate moeen, but he somehow manages to take wickets in england, particularly at rose bowl and lords- this despite english pitches not providing much for spinners.

other than a few late wickets which flatter his statline, lyon wasnt great in the first innings. and lyon, along with ashwin, has been amongst the most consistent spin bowlers in the test format in recent years (despite one of the other posters suggesting australia lacks spinners earlier in this thread ).

its too early to write off moeen. i havent followed this innings too closely, but why was he brought in so early with the new ball? his economy was bad but you dont really have a better option in this format

his batting has been pretty poor tho...

Well Woakes is bowling straight away after lunch so it looks like he’s fit to bowl ok. If that’s the case then not using one of the only two bowlers we’ve got left in this match who looks like any kind of wicket taking threat during that crucial session just gone that’s probably decided the outcome of the match, is a brain fart of massive proportions.

I agree. What I don't agree is that the ball that got Stokes out was a "bad ball". It rose up off a length and should have been left in my view. Make the bowler bowl at the stumps and wait for the real bad bowl, such as a leg stump half volley. If they want to bowl wide of the stumps leave them alone and let them tire themselves out. You could see Stokes knew he should have left it.

Yeah, when his back foot first hits the ground, it's still within the sideline, but spreads over it afterwards. If it had first landed on the line or over it, then it would have been a no-ball.

Whatever his failings that Steve Smith is one hell of a batsman.

And on and on he goes while we fiff and faff about not having a clue on how to get the bloody bloke out.

Pains me to say but he is the best test batsmen out there bar absolutely no one.

Bollocks.
