Swansea recycling fines 06:51 - Feb 26 with 14472 views | Lord_Bony | Residents of Swansea can now be fined £100 as from today for failing to recycle waste. New patrol officers will be checking black bin bags on collection day. If any recyclable material is found and that includes food, fines will be issued. They have been trying to get this implemented since 2006. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-47360778

Swansea recycling fines on 17:54 - Mar 9 by Jack123 | I hope you phoned them! Strange way they do things, I'm assuming they took away the black bag, quite surprised by that, because it seem's their policy with plastic waste is to leave the lot behind, if there in one offending article, happened to my neighbour the other day, they had a full pink sack full of plastic, but the bin men left it there, because they had put one carrier bag in there, |
Is a carrier bag classed as plastic? I thought the definition of plastic was hard plastic only. Some definitive information from the council wouldn’t go amiss. Another one, is a fast food drinks cup paper? If they want us to recycle without fear of our bags being left behind, they need to fully explain what’s what.

Swansea recycling fines on 18:40 - Mar 9 by Andy1300 | It was too late when I got home. The street was empty of black bags. I walk the dog before I leave for work and saw 2 council guys in our street checking bags, they even saw me put our food waste bin out and said good morning to me. |
There were two council chaps in our estate on Friday morning checking the pink bags, they weren’t touching the black bags for now. They had a clipboard. I like clipboards. I had a chat with them when I was out with the mutt. Nice chaps. Just doing a job like the rest of us.

Plenty of information about what goes in which bag around.

Point me in the direction then please. And if you know the answer to my questions above, tell me. I know many people who are confused on the finer points. We all know a milk carton or a take away carton is plastic. I don’t know the answer to the two I’ve asked though.

Green bag - paper and cardboard. Green bag - cans, tins , bottles etc. Pink bag - hard plastics. Black bags - all other non recyclable items, including soft plastics. https://www.swansea.gov.uk/kerbsidecollection

I’ve seen this and it’s very useful. I also mis-read the post above where the poster said his neighbour’s pink bag was rejected because there was a carrier bag inside. I though he said black. So I can deduce that carrier bags aren’t plastic. Now, what about takeaway cups, foiled back cardboard. Contrary to what you may think, I recycle everything I can in the right bags and must get 99%+ right but there are somethings I see that make me wonder. In those cases I either guess or put it in the black bag but don’t want to risk having them refused (no pun intended!). I pay too much bloody council tax for that! Don’t we all.

I don’t know what’s led you to think I’m making a judgement on your recycling efforts. I don’t care. Just saying that the info is out there. I work on the basis that if it’s not suitable for pink or green it goes in black. Doesn’t seem that hard to me. We usually have two black bags per fortnight, occasionally three but not often. Yes, likewise. I think I felt I was giving the impression rather than you thinking I had if that makes sense. Still no answer on the takeaway cup? Anyone, not just you.

I put them (except coffee cups) in green and the plastic tops in pink. Seems to work.

Sorry to keep on about this, but what about the coffee cups. Are they plastic lined and therefore not suitable for paper recycling?

Ok. I’ve put them in the paper bin without penalty but have never been sure. The reason I ask is because I want to ensure I’m recycling properly. Another problem that arises is after Christmas with gift wrapping. I put it all in paper but not sure if I’m totally correct. A bit of extra information at that time of year would be useful.

In fairness the Council do give out the info at Christmas, the scrunch test, screw it up, if it opens back up after scruntching, it's not paper

Separate green bags. One for paper, card etc. One for cans, tins, foil, bottles. The link I posted hours ago explained all this. Pay attention. Most of us in Swansea mastered this years ago. Keep up. [Post edited 9 Mar 2019 23:16]

Read what I said. You don’t put foil in with paper. I said ‘not with paper’. Now who needs to be paying attention? Step away from the bottle!🤣
