Great Vetch photo at the National Football Museum 21:02 - May 19 with 11123 viewsBrother_Ben

I was looking around for a picture of the Vetch for the background on my PC and came across a collection entitled THE GAME: 30 YEARS THROUGH THE LENS OF STUART ROY CLARKE
each photo has an audio file alongside it where he describes each one.

http://www.nationalfootballmuseum.com/exhibitions/the-game

The Vetch photo is number 37, a great picture from the old upper east in 1994 looking down on the corner of the North Bank. The Vetch was unique in so many ways, not least the crazy layout. Just went through the entire thing, some great shots in there.

I bought Stuart Clarke's book, as I'm standing behind the girl sitting on The North Bank, behind the large black & white chequered flag.

I first saw the original at an exhibition near the Marina in Swansea, before a game at The Vetch. It was for sale, but I couldn't afford it at the time. Not buying it was one of my biggest regrets. Finding the book made up for it somewhat.

call me a sentimental fool but when your sitting in your seat in east stand doesn't a part of you yearn for the concrete of the north bank

Call me a sentimental fool too, but yes... absolutely.

My username is derived from the title Stuart Clarke chose for his photo.

Isn't that the end of the North bank where the namby pamby part time plastic supporters stood.

Whereas the hard core loyal fans stood packed shoulder to shoulder at the TA end.

Yes that's that where plastics like me and my brothers (me since the late 60's and my brother since the late 1950's) used to stand.
Plastics one and all, hangers on just came to watch the glory days of re-election, being beaten by Minehad in the cup, taking on the might of Crewe, Workington and Southport..
"The hard core loyal supporters" (led by Buller and followed by the rest like the Pied Piper) used to stand in the middle at the back and would occasionally run down towards the "massed" away supporters (usually about 20 hardy souls) gathered under the Double Decker, before they put the boarding at the back, causing most to "relocate"

We used to move from west side to east side of North bank depending on the end we were attacking. It's changed as crowds increased from 4k to 15k+ post Tosh, when the centre NB was jammed. Also remember a few games in the south west corner terrace where they put away fans for a few seasons.

We used to go from end to end depending on which way we were (not) scoring. It was a joy to behold watching Carl Heggs and Steve Torpey miss so close up.

We used to do the same in the 90s. Change ends at half time. Then, as you say, for the bigger games you weren’t really able to do that anymore.

Now that photo really brings the memories back.

Used to walk down from the Builders Arms or the Singleton (Ruffians in the Garibaldi).

The Vetch under lights was, well, special!!

I'm sure I remember this happening when I started going in the late 80s. Probably once the plastics of the early 80s had disappeared.

Attacking?

Yeah, I have vague recollections of that concept. It's slipped my mind recently though.
