Who is the most famous person you have met? on 22:18 - Mar 6 by MillJack | Kevin Spacey believe it or not, randomly at a friends house in Hackney. You can insert whatever pun you like here but it was bizarre encounter to say the least. In a footballing sense, definitely John Charles. |
Did Kevin Spacey insert anything that's what we want to know? 🤔

Who is the most famous person you have met? on 21:26 - Mar 6 by londonlisa2001 | Outside. It's a Royal Peculiar. Princess Margaret went there regularly I believe. On a similar note, I don't know whether you ever knew or met a guy called Victor Stock? He was the Rector of St Mary-le-Bow (it of the Bow Bells), and was hilarious at lunch or dinner. One of the most entertaining men in London. He's retired now. |
That's right, Princess Margaret was one of his on-going ministries. The name Victor Stock does ring a bell, but I can't quite summon up much by way of context. The only thing I am getting is something to do with Soho, but that can't be right by the sound of things!

Who is the most famous person you have met? on 20:18 - Mar 5 by Garyjack | I suppose for me was Donald Curry (the cobra), the night he split Colin Jones nose apart. We were staying at the same hotel, and he invited us to his 'after fight party', real humble guy despite being described as the best pound for pound fighter in the world in the days of Hagler, Hearns Duran etc. Loads of well known boxers there who were up for a photo. Lloyd Honeygan, Henry Cooper, Mark Kayler and a few others. Asked Desmond Lynam for a pic and he flatly refused. VVanker! |
I taught Colin Jones. Quiet, respectful, polite boy. Animal in the ring though. I also went to school with the last Archbishop of Canterbury (he was in the same class as Teacosy Pete, and this was before comprehensive education). The Archbishop tried very hard to be my friend but I wasn't having a bar of it. We might get along okay now though. I may have metioned this in a previous thread but I may have some sort of record for being someone who's had his pint stolen by famous people - Jonathan Davies and Charles Dance both tried it (not on the same night) and only managed a sip or two before I glowered them ino submission. Didn't speak to either of them. They were beneath my drunken contempt.

Who is the most famous person you have met? on 21:51 - Mar 6 by Lohengrin | I’ve noticed through reading you posts over this past few years you seem to have made the acquaintance of quite a few high profile Churchmen, Lisa. I don’t mean to be overly nosy but are the C of E clients of your firm by any chance? |
Lol. No, I studied music at college and there was a big overlap with theologians through organ scholars, lay clerks, etc etc. I have a number of friends who joined the clergy and we've reached that age where some of them are pretty senior now. I met Victor Stock though through work. I've never worked in that sort of firm Loh (not since days as a trainee). I've always worked in industry. When I was a trainee though, Banco Ambrosiano were clients but not C of E.

There used to be an amazing unlicensed club on 2 or 3 floors of a building on the tiny lane that connects Cambridge Circus to Old Compton Street. An alll nighter in the days before the licensing laws changed. Incredible mix of people in there including many who worked in the bars and restaurants, and a load of villains. Never used to be any trouble though. Only in Soho! [Post edited 7 Mar 2018 16:49]

I used to enjoy getting in on the cheap, later on, at Ronnie Scott's, and the having a late night toastie and coffee in Bar Italia across the road. It was expensive in there, even in the mid to late 90's though.

The one where they've now built the hotel? On Moor Street? Or the one that G-A-Y has taken over on 3 floors? (Think that one used to be called the London Casino). They were both late night dens.

Still occasionally get a late night coffee or drink in Bar Italia if we've been out in Soho or seen a show in the West End. Remains good, particularly in the summer when you can sit outside watching the world go by and still gets the Ronnie Scotts crowd. And good old Balans is still open 24 hours a day for food and drinks as well.

I haven't been round there for at least 10 years, so not entirely sure what has happened recently, but it was decrepit building so certainly ripe for redevelopment. It was on Moor Street, on the left hand side walking down towards Charing Cross road. No markings at all on the door. Knock and a couple of heavies would let you in. There was a pool table or two on one of the floors that was only sometimes open. Or open to the public cos a lot of drug taking went on there. Floor was very badly warped seriously affecting the path of the balls and a lot of local knowledge was required to have any chance. Other floors had bars but it was really a sort of mad rave in one and a chillout type area in another. Have you been there? [Post edited 7 Mar 2018 21:15]

Impressive stuff. I presume you're referring to Dynevor School? ironic to think that Rowan Williams and Teabag (Teacosy?) Pete were in the same class. Very divergent careers. Can't believe you stared Dance down, considering what a brilliantly malevolent bast*rd he looked as Tulkinghorn in the TV adaptation of Bleak House!
