I went to school (Rochdale Tech) with a girl called Franny Hall who came from the Norden area. She`d be 66 now and though I never actually had the pleasure, she was well known in class for being very "friendly" with the boys. Is it the same woman?
That's the question the female driver will be thumbscrewed about. In this situation, the individual always gets the blame, but the bus company has to share (or own) the responsibility because whilst staff are only human and can make mistakes, more often than not the error comes about through systems failure - or lack of training.
Another factor is the amount of diversion signs around our streets. If I were a visitor to Rochdale and didn't know the road layout, I'd be driving round in bloody circles for hours.
However, as a "professional driver" it would be her responsibility to know the dimensions of her vehicle. If she is approaching a low bridge and is in any way unsure as to whether it will fit under, simply apply the brakes and don't compromise the safety and lives of the passengers. She is to blame, no-one else.

I have heard that the passengers were yelling at her to stop as she was going the wrong way but there may have been a language problem.

However, after many years of looking into the quality of care delivered by highly trained professionals in the NHS, I can assure you that individuals are rarely solely culpable when errors occur.
The type of finger-pointing you seem to be doing also rarely does anything to prevent such incidents occurring again.
As another example, errors occurring in the cockpit of commercial aircraft have been almost entirely eliminated, through systems and procedures being put in place in recognition of the fact that human beings are fallible. I wonder how much training had been given to the driver; for instance, had she been taken along the correct route beforehand - or, as is so often the case, left to her find her own way after a peremptory check?
'looking through the various news reports etc. It seems the lady driver had not been employed very long and this was her first ish week of unsupervised driving.
Ill bet my mortgage, that she has gone down Tweedale Street instead of Drake Street, from Manchester Road then done a right, thinking it was Water Street, and then suddenly saw the bridge and thought F**kIN>>
Poor lady and passengers must have been terrified. Shame there seemed to be too many locals, too busy filming it, and not helping the injured....
And before you leftys start, I blame Society, not the culture of the local population.

The thing is - how many bus routes are there around Greater Manchester? If each driver had to train each one, supervised, it would take an awful lot of time and training. Do modern buses have sat nav ? You would have thought so.

But the bus was travelling towards Tweedale Street from Milkstone Road, so the opposite direction to your suggestion. I can't for the life of me work out why it should have been on Milksstone Road travelling that way.... no doubt a full explanation will follow.

No it turned off Manchester rd onto Tweedale St instead of Drake St. Then it turned right towards Milkstone road and into the bridge.

Yes, apologies, I see that now. The photograph initially published was captioned as being taken from Miall Street, when clearly it was looking TOWARDS Miall Street.
The 17 should have turned left and gone along station approach before the bridge as the Bury buses do.
I see lots of paperwork being completed.............

I know someone who was on the bus and she was most upset by insensitive people filming her and the other passengers who were in a state of trauma , many with blood on their faces and clearly shocked and shaken. it's a pity these locals didn't think first of helping the injured instead of getting in the way.
