James Thomas - season ticket for life 09:15 - Sep 15 with 12178 views | Charsean | Morning guys. I got talking to James Thomas a couple of weeks ago and asked if he still follows the swans. He said that he's got a season ticket and goes to as many games as work (ambulance technician) allows. I joked that he probably gets a freebie and he replied that he didn't even get a discount. WTF!!!! He wasn't complaining or moaning about it but I felt he was somewhat disappointed - and rightly so. I know there's been many people who helped our incredible rise but without his hat trick that day we would never be where we are today. I've canvassed quite a few fans and they believe he should be rewarded with a season ticket for life - in fact most think he should have a statue at the liberty. Anyway I'm trying to drum up support from the fans and the evening post to get JT rewarded with something that he so thoroughly deserves. If you're on Twitter please leave a comment on #jamesthomasseasonticketforlife Thank you for your time

No way. If we didn't get promoted at Luton then in all probability we would have gone up the next year we had a quality side. Scoring a goal is just that imo, scoring a hattrick is almost carrying the match result single handedly (although there were many important players against Hull admittedly). If JT didn't score the hattrick against Hull we would not have been in the football league. Without doubt James Thomas' 90 minute contribution is only matched by Scott Sinclairs play off game IMO. However Scott Sinclair has profited with millions of pounds from both us and Man City since and of course most importantly is not a Swansea fan. [Post edited 15 Sep 2014 10:13]

James Thomas - season ticket for life on 10:17 - Sep 15 with 1424 views | icecoldjack | Difficult one this. Everyone played a part back then but James performance on that day Will mean he has a special place in peoples hearts . Im sure if it was taken to a vote then most would agree a special reward like a season ticket for life would be a classy touch and something that would be a Nice reward for James . I know There Are plenty of pro s from our past that you could make a case for but lets be honest i dont Think There Are many that Made such an important contribution over one 90 min game. I see both sides of the argument but i dont Think any other former players would really be grudge James that accolade if it were to happen. It was a Roy of the rovers moment that for many meant the begining of a Long and wonderful journey . Give him a freebee mun !

James Thomas - season ticket for life on 09:20 - Sep 15 by Darran | What just him? Ridiculous. |
I know a few people who would also be worthy of a ticket, they haven't scored any goals for Swansea though, which seems to be the criteria. James had a wonderful opportunity to play for his home town club which he did. He scored some goals in a Very important game, and we are all very grateful. He is now doing what we all do, working in a job. Paying his way and earning a crust. I hope he enjoys saving up for his tickets like we all do. The rewards are there for all to see.

James Thomas - season ticket for life on 10:08 - Sep 15 by Charsean | I understand what some of your are saying but would the likes of freestone, Cusack and sinclair actually want or use a season ticket. James Thomas buys his own season ticket as he comes from Swansea and has always been a swans fan... I think some of you are forgetting his contribution to the history of the club. Our rise started with his hat trick... Without it.... Would we even have a club now . Just my thoughts |
HMM, I would say our fall ended with his hat trick. Our rise started shortly thereafter. I'm not saying he's not worthy of remembering, a place on the wall yes. But a lifetime reward for doing his job? Yes he is a jack, but he came to us from Blackburn. He will also have had insurance and a players pension. I doubt he's short of a bob or two. What about the Swans fans who have followed the club through thick and thin, home and away, who have spent many thousands over the years and continue to spend even though money is very tight? Do they deserve recognition then? PS, and what about that small group of fans (we were back then) who stuck together, who went to the meeting down the Patti and those responsible for starting the trust? The point being, while James has a big piece of our history to his name, there are a lot of other people who also have big parts, take any one of them out of the equation and things could be very different now. James Thomas - season ticket for life on 09:40 - Sep 15 by Uxbridge | Well personally I'd like to see SCFC take in as much money as is needed not screw out every penny they can, but hey ho. As for the topic, I'd take a more general view. I know there's some work being done by the club and Trust on setting up an Old Pro's association and I think that's the sort of thing that is really important as should look after those who didn't play when the financial aspect was even in the same timezone as it is now and particularly if in hardship. You obviously can't give STs to the 1000 or so former players but maybe something could be done in terms of the wall of fame inductees? Doesn't even need to be free tickets but thinks like access to the bar, VP suite etc. Actually this may be happening to some degree already. I'd have no problem with making a special case for JT though. Without him we'd simply not be here. May not even have a club. |
was JT the only player playing that day then?

You started a decent and interesting thread that some will agree with and others wont, in the end, everyone should be thanked, which sort of answers your question. A team is about the team not individuals.

You could also say that had James done his job better during the season it wouldn't have come down to the last game and that's a serious point.

15 goals in that team. That Costa chappy would have done well to top that.

Yes but he was injured for much of that season darran, least if memory serves me well ! We have rewarded the likes of kris o leary, trundle tate with a 4 yr deal knowing he would hardly play, monk with an extension knowing he Will hardly play, all that has run into millions if the majority of fans Think James deserves something as a reward then im good with that. We Are rewarding ex players down here anyway, it could Even be argued that There were more deserving of ambassadør roles and youth coaching roles than who we already have. So,etimes There Are special moments in sport that need to be acknowledged and Even separatly rewarded irrelevant of thr career span of an induvidual . As i said , its a Roy of the rovers moment that every ex pro of the swans would be happy to acknowledge and not begrudge a reward if given IMO . I can see both sides though..

Lee Jenkins and Jonathan Coates both played vital part that day, both local especially Jon, didn't go on to have lucrative careers afterwards. Don't think just one local player should receive free ticket, I appreciate the goals were vital but thats what strikers do. All should be treated equally.

James Thomas - season ticket for life on 10:02 - Sep 15 by Chief | I'm a huge James Thomas fan, don't get me wrong. But at the end of the day, he was just doing his job. amazingly important goals, but he was getting paid for it at the time. not like he was doing it for free. his short time at the club should never be forgotten however. where does it end? Roger Freestone would be an example of a more worthy receipient. acted above and beyond the call of duty many times over his long tenure at the club: worked for free, took pay cuts, did the managers job when they weren't capable of it and rejected offers from higher clubs |
Who the others heggs Cornforth ones I remember (i think) play whilst not getting paid for a couple of months [Post edited 15 Sep 2014 11:05]

Jenkins should be bummed in front of a capacity crowd for his defending that led to that first goal.

Are you suggesting Lee Jenkins played the same vital role in that match as James Thomas?! Come om now, there is taking a maverick stance and there is taking a maverick stance... In this case you may as well change your name to maverick.

Most players make mistakes / wrong calls/ poor pass / poor marking etc etc at some point during a 90 minute match. Unfortunately those made by a defender or keeper are usually remembered most as the consequence is sometimes a goal conceded. James will be rembered for that match and rightly so. Cutler also stands out in my mind. All players on that day were vital. Don't think giving one season ticket to one player for that match is right way forward.

He's probably got less disposable income than you . I think the gravy train of the PL passed him buy , probably earned less than some of our U21's. If anyone deserves a discount or more appropriately a freebie it's him
