Digestive problems 21:06 - Jul 19 with 4012 viewsQuakerJack

Went to Cuba last November, got the sh!ts out there and never been the same since. Get the runs regularly. Had tests, blood and stool, now being referred to a Gastroenterologist.

Don't think it's anything sinister as I'm too young and don't really have any other symptoms.

IBS is one possibility but, despite the fact that I've had a stool test, I'm still thinking it's a parasite from my trip to Cuba. Anyone else had any similar experiences, particularly following travelling?

Not trying to frighten anyone but a fella in my street went to see the GP a few weeks ago because he was feeling unwell he had the shits and the GP told him he had IBS,he wasn't happy so he paid for a second opinion down Sancta Maria and discovered he had leukemia.

Could be a parasite, but quite likely IBS following Campylobacter infection.

Christ almighty. See I'm not saying I have that. But I do get the feeling I have something a lot worse than IBS, it's stories like that that make you realise it's very possible.

I've thought about getting a second opinion on the private. It goes against my principles but when it comes to your health you can't mess about.

I had a bad case of Campylobacter in 2010. Completely knocked me for six and to be frank I still have issues now and again (hell of state 1-2 days after eating Italian randomly) etc.

Also check for colitis. How did you get it in the first place then?

Fell ill towards the end of our trip to Cuba, hasn't been the same since.

The three main symptoms are diarrhea or extremely soft, flatulence and an urgent need when you have to go to the toilet. I don't really get pain, I long for constipation it's that bad, sorry for the gory details, just hoped I could at least get some idea of what I had if anyone had experienced the same.

I think the tests I had have ruled colitis out. I'll check that link for the diagnosis, thanks. ,

Worked in India last June had a bad dose of the shits with slight fever three days better then The same again for two or three days. Had a bit of a dodgy guts for a few weeks then ok. Went to a away game in Sept had another episode completely out of the blue spent the entire game in the toilet. Then ok again until Boxing Day another away day disaster.

Been ok since but not right and nobody has any idea what it is, could just be as a result of the India trip and literally stripping bacteria out of the gut and it is now sensitive to anything slightly dodgy. Prior to this constitution of an ox.

Life is an adventure or nothing at all.

Quaker in all seriousness do not feck about with something like that. Insist on a second and third opinion if necessary and badger them until each and every option has been explored. Go private if you don't think you're getting enough help.

I have had similar symptoms that were almost certainly due to a food allergy.

What might help you to get things under control is to eat very simple food that is easy to digest, like steamed fish, vegetables, rice etc..

At the same time I strongly suggest you start taking a fibre supplement. The one I have used personally is not that cheap but it certainly worked for me and I still use it when I have the occasional flare up:

Good luck.

IMO highly unlikely to be a parasite - not impossible but unlikely. A few years back I woke up with terrible stomach pains to the point I was rushed to hospital in an ambulance. It happened two or three more times in the next few months. I had the sh!ts occasionally, nausea often and I must have had between twenty and thirty blood tests with almost impossible results, magic eye, ECG, ultrasounds and the one where they put you in that big tunnel machine. I was discharged by my specialist after a couple of years of nothing being found, he reckons I either passed my own gallstones or I had another condition which required specialist in London, I felt better so passed on it, got on the weights and cut down on the acidic foods and tbh I think I'm past it. Parasites were ruled out very early on as was the big C. Sometimes things just come and go.

You should NEVER ask or look for medical advice on the internet... you always get told its the worst!

I'm sure its nothing mate, but def get a second opinion just to put your mind at rest.

Yeah the only site I'll use is the NHS website. You read some horrific stuff and if it is IBS, causing stress by reading you might have cancer just makes things worse.

The parasite theory was that it came about in Cuba, where that sort of thing is common.

I know people who have had issues like this that have gone after a year or more. I do need to alter my diet tho, maybe cut down on the beer as well.
