Coventry City preparing a third bid for Matt Grimes - We look at the reasons why

Swansea City captain, Matt Grimes has been the subject of transfer speculation over numerous transfer windows. On each occasion when speculation arises he has made it clear he won’t leave the club.

We’ve covered this subject matter before.

⚽️ 2021 - Bids in for Grimes

At that time we were reliably informed by the same source that informed us on the meeting behind the removal of Steve Cooper as Swans manager the day after the play off final, so there is traction to their reliability. That was an exclusive, and came true.

⚽️ 2022- Grimes commits to Swansea

⚽️ 2023- Grimes undecided ?

We know that Russell Martin was keen to discuss Grimes future in 2023 but the player committed again to the Swans and his family and we gave the reasons why.

⚽️ 2024- The reasons why Grimes will stay

And again this is a profile on Matt Grimes and his family commitments overshadowing any move away from Swansea.

What we have now is a completely different picture. There is speculation that Matt Grimes has driven these bids despite only six weeks or so ago persuading Ben Cabango to sign a new contract. That’s purely conjecture, and in any event it will be his agent who does this on his behalf not the player. So, it seems we may have an agent contacting clubs to put Grimes name forwards as a potential transfer. Oh, remember Luke Williams and his agent comments ? No Swansea fan should be as daft as to believe anything especially where agents are involved. We will leave that there. But agents will only act on their clients wishes.

All we know is the bids have been in the low millions, and really do not even reach half the value the Swans put on losing Grimes. Whatever that is. It has been suggested, but NOT confirmed that Grimes is valued by the Swans at around four to five million pounds. What we should also realise is that profit and sustainability is squeezing the Swans hard, we’ve had several reports on this after being given guidance by experts in the football finance field.

⚽️ What are the reasons if Grimes did leave ?
Any agreement for him to leave would hit the Swans support massively. If he did then that’s a huge change of heart from the club captain. And that change may well be that there is a loss of faith in head coach, Luke Williams and the Swansea board. We have always stood by the fact that a lot of the squad are tired of repetitive and prescriptive training under Williams. So much so Grimes has fielded some of their complaints. The other issue is this daily training methodology isn’t working in the minds of the players. Why ? Well quite simply the training which is intensive never really reflects positive results on the pitch. We’ve said it before, if your manager told you to follow their philosophy at work and it never worked, what faith would you have in them ? With the club going nowhere and refusing to address the dire Luke Williams situation, you could well add that into the mix. Grimes is too professional to say otherwise of course, unless you have an insight, and of course as we stated nobody is ruling out the Swans board as a primary reason.

If anything is in Grimes wanting to leave then these are certainly reasonable assumptions, with insight as stated.

⚽️ What would Swans fans expect from a sale ?
Some will tell you Grimes is irreplaceable, and to an extent he is. However, his leadership skills on the pitch have always been in question, not off it, that’s logged and he is an exceptional captain away from any match day. If the Swans bagged a windfall for Grimes some serious transfers would need to come in this week. At least two midfielders, Ethan Galbraith at Orient and Adam Phillips at Barnsley have been mentioned. The capture of Joe Low would also be demanded. All three though are League One players. We exclusively reported the salary grades at the Swans in the summer. That led to our report on League One salaries at the Swans. Remarkably people who take issue with this site are happy to repeat this information.

The lines of communication we have just heard are very open between Coventry City and Swansea City. We can expect another bid very soon, that tells us that Grimes isn’t in favour of stopping the dialogue between the two clubs. And unlike on every occasion before he is most certainly not as insistent he wants to remain at the Swans.

Jack Butty on the Swans : The scurvy & the detritus of a wasted year
The bedraggled, bespectacled, and befuddled figure walked along the shoreline in desperate dismay. His ship had crashed on the rocks of Fowey Point. Skipperless and rudderless, the imminent disaster was only a matter of time. Ahead, he saw a barnacled figure covered in seaweed and bladderwrack. “Ahoy matey. Jack Butty here. Don’t worry, we can get a new skipper and a boat, and aroving again we will go.”
David Gray in Swans link : Tales of the unexpected ? Context
Despite reports from social media and another claim by Alan Nixon the new link to another man in the frame for the Swansea City job is carrying little weight at this moment in time. We have had a look into the news on this and despite the murmurings there’s little to point to current Hibernian manager, David Gray to the Swansea role.

Four points from six as the Swans battle hard for a point at Deepdale
Scrappy it may have been at times but both sides put in maximum effort in this encounter beneath the lights in Preston. It won’t be remembered as the finest game of football, but you really do get the feeling this was a game the Swans would have lost before Luke Williams departure.

Preston North End manager, Paul Heckingbottom is defiant in his comments that tonight’s game against Swansea City (7:45pm) is far more important than their forthcoming FA Cup tie against Aston Villa. It’s most certainly an attempt to take his players minds of that tie to concentrate on the league. And with so many glory hunters around their talk is most certainly aimed at the big game rather than tonight.
