Swansea City striker search widens

Russell Martin has insisted the swans find a striker to rival Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi in the transfer window. Despite allowing Morgan Whittaker and it seems Liam Cullen to leave on potential loan deals there is room for another striker to come in.

Swansea City have been linked with Sam Greenwood at Leeds United and despite two previous attempts to bring him in on loan they have failed. There have been talks this month but still there seems there is a stall on him being allowed to come to Swansea. We have been told that an agreement is far closer today than ever before. However, we also know certain coaching staff at Swansea see him as not offering that much more when compared to Morgan Whittaker. It’s clearly pointless to bring in a player on loan when you already have a match or better in your ranks. Sam Greenwood was one of Arsenal academy’s brightest prospects before he opted to join Leeds United last summer. It turned out to be a wise move as the youngster starred for the club’s reserve side last season, notably netting twelve goals in eighteen Premier League 2 appearances. Nothing much has materialised since. During his time in Leeds so far, Greenwood has made a name for himself with his productivity. But while a centre forward by trade, the Sunderland native is more of a modern striker, who can provide the tactical flexibility in the attacking third.

Sam Greenwood will be much sought after next month

Where do the swans look now ?
Tony Scully at Lincoln City has been mentioned, but it does leave Lincoln in a similar position to Swansea by bringing in Morgan Whittaker. Scully, who started his career at West Ham ten years ago when he was twelve has fired twenty goals for Lincoln in his last sixty games. He is a viable option, but again a gamble. The swans have had talks with Lincoln on a number of points recently and he would most certainly have been mentioned.

Anthony Scully offers goals at a lower level

The real issue for Swansea City is wages. Players who are available and would be a sure fire positive for any championship club are on triple the salary than even the swans highest paid player. Premier league cast offs are available but they come with a huge price. This is why Swansea do their shopping looking down rather than up. The ideal solution is for a loan deal for an attacking midfielder in the vein of James McAtee as an example, and despite rumours of him staying at the citizens, that’s not factually correct. Swansea have had dialogue very recently about him and one other City player. Nothing is confirmed, but to state it won’t happen is wide of the mark.

We all know about Folarin Balogun at Arsenal, they still are to agree a new deal for him in it’s entirety despite reports, so they won’t let him go without signing a contract. If he did there are two clubs in pole position to get him in a loan, and Swansea City are one of those clubs. There’s little news around on this, but sporting director Mark Allen has a long list of targets and possibilities, all of which meet Martin’s criteria and will require board member Jake Silverstein to negotiate fee’s and deals.

Balogun, still to agree full terms with Arsenal

Of course there is another opportunity out there. One we all know. A guy knocking in the goals for a Plymouth Argyle. His name ? Jordon Garrick, now he wouldn’t cost anything at all.

As we get more we will keep you updated. However, as it stands the ideal scenario which would excite swans fans the most is clearly Balogun and McAtee to come in, and the list of players we already know to leave.
