New rules for Carabao cup clash Tuesday, 14th Aug 2018 14:00 by Col There's some new rules that are kicking in ahead of this evening's game with Grimsby. There's usually one or two changes that come in each season and this year is no exception. The biggest change is that from this season there will be no extra time, The powers that be have decided to relieve fatigue on the players, any drawn game will go straight to penalties. And those penalties will be the straight forward penalties. The ABBA style penalties were trialled last season but that trial must have been deemed to be unsuccessful and so they've been binned off. Another new rule, and it's a bit late for this one, is that they have scrapped the seeding in the first two rounds. We have been seeded in each of the past two seasons (but wouldn't have been this year) but now it's just a plain old simply balls in the bag. Any yellow cards picked up in the competition will only apply to the Carabao Cup. Five bookings usually means a one match ban but in a bid to strengthen sides in the Competition, any yellow cards picked up will not count towards that five. And finally, we will see VAR used throughout the competition. As long as the game is being played at a Premiership ground.
