Arthur Gnohere Award for Discipline 09/10 Monday, 7th Jul 2008 17:25
In honour of possibly the most leaden footed, ill disciplined, light fingered (allegedly) defender to wear the Hoops for some time, we bring you a list of every card picked up by QPR.
Gary Borrowdale Yellow Cards 4 Opponents: Peterborough H Referee: Olly Langford. Reason: Skinned by Shaun Batt.
Opponents: Barnsley H Referee: Karl Evans Reason: Late foul on De Silva.
Opponents: Reading H Referee: Andy Hall Reason: Lunging tackle on Kebe.
Opponents: Watford A Referee: Andy Penn Reason: That first card of the game was quickly followed by a second for Borrowdale after he fouled Henderson who threatened to break away on the counter attack after Rangers had wasted another corner.
Akos Buzsaky Yellow Cards 4 Opponents: Blackpool H Referee: Andy D'Urso Reason: Fouling Charlie Adam a minute after coming off the bench.
Opponents: Bristol City A Referee: Phill Gibbs Reason: Crude tackle on Maynard that another referee may have shown red for.
Opponents: Newcastle A Referee: Rob Shoebridge Reason: Failing to retreat from a free kick in injury time. Buzsaky had a valid point that Newcastle had marched it some five or six yards closer to the penalty area than where the offence was committed but he was booked all the same.
Opponents: Forest A Referee: Eddie Ilderton Reason: As the clock moved into double figures we had to endure a minute or so of farcical officiating from our referee Mr Ilderton. Firstly Taarabt lost out in a one on one situation and as the Forest player carried the ball away he appeared to trip over his own feet, as Taarabt was laid out five yards away from him, but a free kick was awarded. QPR were then awarded a bizarre free kick of their own for a nonexistent foul on Buzsaky and with frustrations running high the Hungarian was booked within 30 seconds for a scything scissor challenge from behind on Anderson that left the Forest man on the ground and staff from both benches aggressively heading for the touchline. All caused by rank refereeing.
Matt Connolly Yellow Cards 5 Opponents: Peterborough H Referee: Olly Langford Reason: Late tackle on Frecklington.
Opponents: Ipswich H Referee: Fred Graham Reason: As the back line became more ragged Matthew Connolly was rightly booked for a lunge on Owain Garvan.
Opponents: Coventry A Referee: David Foster Reason: Matt Connolly did finally get his yellow for tripping Cranie and was lucky not to get a rid when he lunged in on Deegan no more than a minute later but despite Connolly holding his hands up and effectively giving himself up the referee didn’t even give the free kick.
Opponents: Plymouth H Referee: Paul Tierney Reason: Mistimed tackle on Yannick Bolasie.
Opponents: Reading A Referee: Gavin Ward Reason: Dissent after the award of a late Reading penalty.
Hogan Ephraim Yellow Cards 1 Opponents: Exeter A Referee: Steve Bratt Reason: Obstructing the taking of a quick Exeter free kick.
Alejandro Faurlin Yellow Cards 6 Opponents: Bristol City A Referee: Phil Gibbs Reason: Lost out in one tackle and then rashly dived straight into another on Elliott that received an immediate and deserved booking.
Opponents: Reading H Referee: Andy Hall Reason: Faurlin cynically hauled back McAnuff on the edge of the area as he threatened to break for goal and presented the visitors with an inviting free kick. Young striker Simon Church took it, curling the ball round the wall and Cerny but off the post and away to safety. It rather summed up Reading’s night.
Opponents: Sheff Utd A FA Cup Referee: Andy Hall Reason: Geary was booked for a nasty foul on Ephraim and Faurlin was similarly punished for then fouling Geary as a scrappy game descended into niggle nastiness.
Opponents: Coventry A Referee: David Foster Reason: Faurlin got his for dissent when he slammed the ball into the ground after being incorrectly penalised for a perfectly fair ball winning tackle.
Opponents: West Brom H Referee: Stuart Attwell Reason: Bad tackle on Steven Reid - judging by his injury record I'm surprised Reid didn't crumble into dust on the spot.
Opponents: Reading A Referee: Gavin Ward Reason: Tackle from behind on Jay Tabb.
Kaspars Gorkss Yellow Cards 4 Opponents: Swansea A Referee: Keith Hill Reason: Slid through the back of Nathan Dyer on halfway.
Opponents: Sheff Utd H (FA Cup) Referee: Andy Woolmer Reason: Foul
Opponents: Coventry A Referee: David Foster Reason: Gorkss was booked for a lunging tackle in midfield as he attempted to retake his position at the back during a Coventry counter attack from a QPR free kick.
Opponents: Middlesbrough A Referee: Andy Woolmer Reason: Hauling Leroy Lita down in the penalty area, the second Boro spot kick in as many minutes, both converted by Barry Robson.
Fitz Hall Yellow Cards 3 Opponents: Blackpool H Referee: Andy D'Urso Reason: In injury time went up for a free kic.Rachubka the Blackpool keeper caught it and tried to launch a quick counter attack. hall deliberately prevented him from doing so and was rightly booked.
Opponents: Middlesbrough H Referee: Phil Gibbs Reason: Yeates who had time and space to run at the QPR defence until he was crudely chopped down by Hall. With the free kick awarded a good 40 yards wide of the QPR goal, and Hall booked, we got a chance to see just what a week on the training ground presumably working on defending just this type of set piece that had proved our undoing against Coventry had done for the back four. Answer – absolutely sweet fuck all. In almost identical circumstances to the first Coventry goal a week ago O’Neil swung the ball over and Kitson flicked the ball into the net past Cerny.
Opponents: Watford A Referee: Andy Penn Reason: Rangers then picked up a third yellow for a wild lunge by Fitz Hall that presented Watford with another free kick that Cleverley and Cowie worked short for Hudson whose shot was blocked.
Heidar Helguson Yellow Cards 1 Opponents: Blackpool H Referee: Andy D'Urso Reason: Miscontrolled a ball on the edge of the box and then flew in on Crainey over the ball with both feet raised. Lucky it was not a red.
Matt Hill Yellow Cards 2 Opponents: Plymouth H Referee: Paul Tierney Reason: One of those silly handballs where he instinbctively thrust his arms up to stop a ball flying over his head, and knew straight away he'd been an idiot.
Opponents: Reading A Referee: Gavin Ward Reason: Fouling Sigurdsson in the penalty area - Rangers lost the game one nil thanks to the spot kick though Hill insisted afterwards that he got a lot of the ball.
Mikele Leigertwood Red Cards 1 Opponents: Peterborough A Referee: Danny McDermid Reason: Chasing a loose pass from Faurlin Leigertwood lunged to ground as Tommy Rowe beat him to it and toed the ball away and was then crunched by Leigertwood. Probably a fair decision on reflection, needless, reckless and late.
Yellow Cards 3 Opponents: Newcastle A Referee: Rob Shoebridge Reason: Fouled Gutierez in stoppage time, the Argentine had been diving around all over the place in the second half and Legs finally nailed him for real right at the end of the game.
Opponents: Doncaster A Referee: Tony Bates Reason: It was 23 minutes from time when Rangers finally registered their first shot on target – Sullivan could have thrown his cap on Taarabt’s shot from 20 yards – and in truth they were lucky not to either be further behind on the score board or numerically disadvantaged when Sharp went through on goal and was crudely chopped down by Leigertwood who was probably only saved from first squirt of the Herbal Essences by cover from Matt Connolly.
Opponents: Reading A Referee: Gavin Ward Reason: A nothing foul on halfway, barely even a free kick which leads me to believe card was for accumulating offences.
Alessandro Pellicori Yellow Cards 1 Opponents: Cardiff A Referee: Lee Probert Reason: Deliberately handled a Cardiff pass to prevent it finding its target. Bit of a daft thing to do in injury time when winning 2-0.
Tamas Priskin Yellow Cards 1 Opponents: West Brom H Referee: Stuart Attwell Reason: Stupid and thoroughly justified card. After clearly being fouled by Marek Cech, who was also booked, Priskin made the mock yellow card gesture to the referee demanding his opponent be booked. We don't want to see that in the game in this country and the referee was spot on.
Nigel Quashie Yellow Cards 1 Opponents: Forest A Referee: Eddie Ilderton Reason: Anderson dragged a cross-shot right through the six yard box when either a cross or a shot probably would have yielded a goal – Nigel Quashie was booked for a late hit on Cohen in the build up.
Peter Ramage Red Cards 1 Opponents: Peterborough A Referee: Danny McDermid Reason: Two bookings, see below.
Yellow Cards 3 Opponents: Blackpool H Referee: Andy D'Urso Reason: Miscontrolled a ball on the edge of the box and then flew in on Crainey over the ball with both feet raised. Lucky it was not a red.
Opponents: Peterborough A Referee: Danny McDermid Reason: Foul.
Opponents: Peterborough A Referee: Danny McDermid Reason: Rowan Vine played a hospital pass towards Ramage made a tired lunge on Rowe as the Peterborough man nicked the ball away from him. A second yellow was the obvious outcome and Ramage trudged from the field to join Leigertwood in the early bath water.
Wayne Routledge Yellow Cards 4 Opponents: Blackpool H Referee: Andy D'Urso Reason: Routledge was fouled during a QPR attack but D'Urso played on advantage. Routledge took exception to the foul and lashed out at the Blackpool man after the ball had gone - perhaps lucky to escape a red.
Opponents: Scunthorpe A Referee: Graham Salisbury Reason: Diving. A scandalous decision really as it looked a nailed on penalty.
Opponents: Palace H Referee: Mike Russell Reason: Kicking the ball away.
Opponents: Blackpool A Referee: Trevor Kettle Reason: Another poor piece of refereeing saw Routledge booked in four minutes of added time at the end of the game - Routledge, who had enjoyed a much better second half than first, was clearly fouled on halfway during a counter attack but no free kick was awarded. The winger then angrily chased the ball and slid in on Evatt on halfway resulting in a free kick and, after the most mismatched pushing and shoving contest ever seen on a football field between him and Big Evo, a yellow card.
Martin Rowlands Red Cards 1 Opponents: Swansea A Referee: Keith Hill Reason: Two bookings, see below.
Yellow Cards 2 Opponents: Swansea A Referee: Keith Hill Reason: Rash tackle on Stephen Dobbie.
Opponents: Swansea A Referee: Keith Hill Reason: Went for a loose ball, got beaten to it by Natahn Dyer, sent Dyer flying, second yellow means a red.
Damion Stewart Red Cards 1
Opponents: Reading A Referee: Gavin Ward Reason: Two bookings, see below.
Yellow Cards 7 Opponents: Bristol City A Referee: Phil Gibbs Reason: An innocuous challenge on Clarkson that barely warranted a free kick. Very harsh card.
Opponents: Cardiff A Referee: Lee Probert Reason: A firm but fair and very well executed tackle on Chopra that cleared the ball off for a throw in. This came shortly after an offside QPR goal had been allowed to stand and smacked of evening things up a bit.
Opponents: Newcastle A Referee: Rob Shoebridge Reason: Foul.
Opponents: Watford A Referee: Andy Penn Reason: The frustration as too much for Damion Stewart who launched himself into a horrendous two footed tackle on Jon Harley and was extremely lucky to escape with just a yellow card.
Opponents: Sheff Utd H Referee: Neil Swarbrick Reason: Stewart picked up the game first yellow card for a crude challenge on Ward, who was certainly fouled on that occasion but hit the deck very easily on several others, but United could not deliver from wide areas with the same quality as a moment before.
Opponents: Reading A Referee: Gavin Ward Reason: Raising a boot on Shane Long, although the Reading man seemed to be ducking into the challenge.
Opponents: Reading A Referee: Gavin Ward Reason: Obstructing goalkeeper Adam Federici as he attempted to launch a long kick down field following a QPR corner. The reaction of the Reading players, surrounding the referee and pointing Stewart out as the culprit, left a lot to be desired.
Adel Taarabt Yellow Cards 1 Opponents: Forest A Referee: Eddie Ilderton Reason: Adel Taarabt then became the second QPR player to be booked as he was flagged offside, but smashed the ball high into the stand anyway after the whistle. This began an evening of petulant hand gestures and diving around from Taarabt, although at least when given the ball he could be seen to be making the effort.
Ben Watson Red Cards 2 Opponents: Swansea A Referee: Keith Hill Reason: Two yellows, see below.
Opponents: Reading H Referee: Andy Hall Reason: Two yellows, see below.
Yellow Cards 4 Opponents: Swansea A Referee: Keith Hill Reason: Fouled Leon britton during a counter attack, play was allowed to continue and Watson was booked later.
Opponents: Swansea A Referee: Keith Hill Reason: A poor pass from Borrowdale was touched around Watson by Dyer and the QPR man reacted by dragging the ball back with his hand. Second yellow means a red.
Opponents: Reading H Referee: Andy Hall Reason: Lunging tackle on Shane Long.
Opponents: Reading H Referee: Andy Hall Reason: On the half hour a passage of play ensued that would go on to change the game. First Reading were awarded a free kick on halfway for a foul, the Royals took the free kick quickly and laid a ball through to Kebe when Hall wasn’t actually even watching the play. The flag went up immediately and Kebe was penalised for being offside – a free kick which was again taken quickly, by Cerny this time, while the referee was dealing with other things. Play switched to the other end where Simpson was fouled by Tabb for a free kick some 30 yards away from goal well to the left of centre. Again the free kick was taken quickly, this time by Watson, but as QPR had asked for the wall to be marked out referee Hall produced a yellow card for taking it without his permission and as Watson had already been booked he was sent off for the second time in as many games.
Now I’m not going to stick up for Watson here – having asked for the yards it was a daft thing to do to try and get a quick one off, particularly on a yellow card. Nor am I going to deny that to the letter of the law Hall was right to book him. But pur-lease. An actual red card and two game ban for taking your own free kick (supposed to be an advantage to you) too quickly? Do me a bloody favour. Has it really come to that? A thoroughly pathetic decision and one crying out for a referee to show common sense and give Watson a bit of a stern look and a lecture on how daft it all was. Sadly common sense has never been a strong point of Andy Hall’s – I bet he knew about the beach ball rule at the weekend, I bet he knows every single rule in the book and can quote them to you in his sleep, and I’ll bet he’s never done anything other than apply them to the absolute letter at all times however ridiculous that makes him look. I very much doubt our referee on Saturday Mr Booth would have dismissed Watson on Tuesday night and I know which style I prefer between his laid back, give the game a chance method and Hall’s letter of the law, don’t do that, stop that, pack that in, that’s disgusting whistle-a-thon.
