Reason: Failing to retreat from a free kick in injury time. Buzsaky had a valid point that Newcastle had marched it some five or six yards closer to the penalty area than where the offence was committed but he was booked all the same.

Reason: As the clock moved into double figures we had to endure a minute or so of farcical officiating from our referee Mr Ilderton. Firstly Taarabt lost out in a one on one situation and as the Forest player carried the ball away he appeared to trip over his own feet, as Taarabt was laid out five yards away from him, but a free kick was awarded. QPR were then awarded a bizarre free kick of their own for a nonexistent foul on Buzsaky and with frustrations running high the Hungarian was booked within 30 seconds for a scything scissor challenge from behind on Anderson that left the Forest man on the ground and staff from both benches aggressively heading for the touchline. All caused by rank refereeing.

Reason: As the back line became more ragged Matthew Connolly was rightly booked for a lunge on Owain Garvan.

Reason: In injury time went up for a free kic.Rachubka the Blackpool keeper caught it and tried to launch a quick counter attack. hall deliberately prevented him from doing so and was rightly booked.

Reason: Yeates who had time and space to run at the QPR defence until he was crudely chopped down by Hall. With the free kick awarded a good 40 yards wide of the QPR goal, and Hall booked, we got a chance to see just what a week on the training ground presumably working on defending just this type of set piece that had proved our undoing against Coventry had done for the back four. Answer – absolutely sweet fuck all. In almost identical circumstances to the first Coventry goal a week ago O’Neil swung the ball over and Kitson flicked the ball into the net past Cerny.

Reason: Rangers then picked up a third yellow for a wild lunge by Fitz Hall that presented Watford with another free kick that Cleverley and Cowie worked short for Hudson whose shot was blocked.

Reason: Chasing a loose pass from Faurlin Leigertwood lunged to ground as Tommy Rowe beat him to it and toed the ball away and was then crunched by Leigertwood. Probably a fair decision on reflection, needless, reckless and late.

Reason: Fouled Gutierez in stoppage time, the Argentine had been diving around all over the place in the second half and Legs finally nailed him for real right at the end of the game.

Reason: It was 23 minutes from time when Rangers finally registered their first shot on target – Sullivan could have thrown his cap on Taarabt’s shot from 20 yards – and in truth they were lucky not to either be further behind on the score board or numerically disadvantaged when Sharp went through on goal and was crudely chopped down by Leigertwood who was probably only saved from first squirt of the Herbal Essences by cover from Matt Connolly.

Reason: Stupid and thoroughly justified card. After clearly being fouled by Marek Cech, who was also booked, Priskin made the mock yellow card gesture to the referee demanding his opponent be booked. We don't want to see that in the game in this country and the referee was spot on.

Reason: Routledge was fouled during a QPR attack but D'Urso played on advantage. Routledge took exception to the foul and lashed out at the Blackpool man after the ball had gone - perhaps lucky to escape a red.

Reason: Another poor piece of refereeing saw Routledge booked in four minutes of added time at the end of the game - Routledge, who had enjoyed a much better second half than first, was clearly fouled on halfway during a counter attack but no free kick was awarded. The winger then angrily chased the ball and slid in on Evatt on halfway resulting in a free kick and, after the most mismatched pushing and shoving contest ever seen on a football field between him and Big Evo, a yellow card.

Reason: Stewart picked up the game first yellow card for a crude challenge on Ward, who was certainly fouled on that occasion but hit the deck very easily on several others, but United could not deliver from wide areas with the same quality as a moment before.

Reason: Raising a boot on Shane Long, although the Reading man seemed to be ducking into the challenge.

Reason: Obstructing goalkeeper Adam Federici as he attempted to launch a long kick down field following a QPR corner. The reaction of the Reading players, surrounding the referee and pointing Stewart out as the culprit, left a lot to be desired.

Reason: Adel Taarabt then became the second QPR player to be booked as he was flagged offside, but smashed the ball high into the stand anyway after the whistle. This began an evening of petulant hand gestures and diving around from Taarabt, although at least when given the ball he could be seen to be making the effort.

Reason: On the half hour a passage of play ensued that would go on to change the game. First Reading were awarded a free kick on halfway for a foul, the Royals took the free kick quickly and laid a ball through to Kebe when Hall wasn’t actually even watching the play. The flag went up immediately and Kebe was penalised for being offside – a free kick which was again taken quickly, by Cerny this time, while the referee was dealing with other things. Play switched to the other end where Simpson was fouled by Tabb for a free kick some 30 yards away from goal well to the left of centre. Again the free kick was taken quickly, this time by Watson, but as QPR had asked for the wall to be marked out referee Hall produced a yellow card for taking it without his permission and as Watson had already been booked he was sent off for the second time in as many games.

Now I’m not going to stick up for Watson here – having asked for the yards it was a daft thing to do to try and get a quick one off, particularly on a yellow card. Nor am I going to deny that to the letter of the law Hall was right to book him. But pur-lease. An actual red card and two game ban for taking your own free kick (supposed to be an advantage to you) too quickly? Do me a bloody favour. Has it really come to that? A thoroughly pathetic decision and one crying out for a referee to show common sense and give Watson a bit of a stern look and a lecture on how daft it all was. Sadly common sense has never been a strong point of Andy Hall’s – I bet he knew about the beach ball rule at the weekend, I bet he knows every single rule in the book and can quote them to you in his sleep, and I’ll bet he’s never done anything other than apply them to the absolute letter at all times however ridiculous that makes him look. I very much doubt our referee on Saturday Mr Booth would have dismissed Watson on Tuesday night and I know which style I prefer between his laid back, give the game a chance method and Hall’s letter of the law, don’t do that, stop that, pack that in, that’s disgusting whistle-a-thon.
