Big Dilemma For Nigel
Big Dilemma For Nigel
Tuesday, 19th Jul 2011 10:13

Nigel Adkins has indicated that there may be a face or two in by Saturday, but its hard for him to make plans.

Im sure that Nigel Adkins would like to get his players in and signed as early as possible, to give them time to bed in with their new team mates, however the real question that has to be answered is the Oxo one.

How can Adkins really plan for the following season till he knows whether the squad will contain Chamberlain or not, this affects him in two ways, one would be a positional question ie if Chamberlain stays he doesnt need to consider buying a new wide man and can strengthen in other areas whereas if he goes he does.

But it isnt as simple as that, presumably if Chamberlain stays there will be less cash for players than if we trouser a large amount from Arsenal et al, although this doesnt sound too bad initially, it would of course affect the standard of target that Adkins would go for and could be the difference between splashing out on someone like Nicky Maynard or going for a less expensive option.

So for Nigel its a tricky problem and one that he would want to see solved sooner rather than later, of course he would want to keep Chamberlain in an ideal World, however in many ways he would perhaps be relieved if the situation was taken out of his hands with Chamberlain departing now, meaning that Adkins knows exactly what the task is ahead of him and exactly what money he has to spend on it.

Wouldn't Jonathan Forte be the one to play wide right if Chamberlain left. I think that was the reason he was bought in January, just to here just in case he left.
Mind you if the 2 pre-season games are anything to go by then Holmes seems fit and raring to go, barring another injury of course.
Also Puncheon is still on the books and all the clubs that have been clamouring for him are nowhere to be seen.According to the Daily Mail Cortese wants a 50% sell on clause for Chamberlain. Perhaps he has put that on any player that wants to leave while still under contract.

Why are we speculating on this week's tabloid tittle-tattle. It's a week since we had an Oxo story let's see what we can rustle up. Adkins knows what he has to play with and I'm sure he know's who is likely to go out and who is likely to come in...if he doesn't he's not doing his job properly. I'm sure all the players have a clause in their contracts restricting what they say to the media, that's why you only hear are players commenting on the coming season through the club website. Do you honestly think Oxo told the Mirror he hopes he will start the new season in the Premiership?

This is not speculating on tabloid tittle tattle, Adkins doesnt know what he has to play with till the situation is settled, that either happens sooner, ie he is sold, or later ie the transfer window closes with him still here.

Adkins needs to know sooner than later and im sure that if Chambeerlain is going to go then Adkins would sooner it happen now so he can spend the cash wisely

We did do very badly out of the Walcott and Bale deals by being forced to take far smaller sums than originally touted. That said however, provided we get an initially decent sum upfront, then a sell-on clause if activated could be considered a welcome bonus. Anything other than cash upfront should never be factored on the books because as we proved this often don't come to fruition. Plus with Walcott wasn't the money received based on club and international performances and not a sell-on fee? We should really maximise the value of our youngsters given what we have invested in them.

All said and done though I hope Oxo stays.

I might add, theres no big club thats gonna pay over £10 million up-front cash for a 17 year old....besides the boy looked well happy in Switzerland and would not even be there if he was gonna leave IMO.......

Fundamentally all of this is part of the "game" sure any "big" club would want to sign an undoubted talent, teenage or not, for as little as they can. Failing to get a bargin price then they will want to mitigate their potential loss by linking that sale price to appearances, honours etc. Again if that is not achievable then the very last option is to leave that deal til the very last minute soas to not allow the selling club or competitors to adjust to the impact of the signing. Adding a sell on clause ups the ante as it reminds the buying club that if the player signed turns out to be a dud then they will bear an even greater financial hit for playing the game.... "Harry Redknapp you've been busted".
