Super U's to make the Dons an offer they can't refuse on Saturday afternoon
at 22:10 21 Feb 2025

Funny how the opening 4-2 has turned out to be a bit of an outlier for both teams. They've only conceded 18 goals in the following 30 matches and our 27 in the next 30 isn't exactly shabby. They've found scoring goals a bit easier than us but have only scored 39 since compared to our 34.

Goodman is well ahead if Macey in the race for the League Two Golden Gloves but hopefully we can get at least one past him tomorrow. Maybe we could get Goodliffe back for the first 15 minutes.

We've got to play in our black kit again tomorrow because despite Wimbledon having three kits they all clash with our home kit. Pretty stupid that they didn't consider that, especially given that we're in the same division. I hope they've been suitably punished. Bet our home shirt sponsors are well happy!

Magpies undone by super U's at Meadow Lane this evening
at 10:09 19 Feb 2025

I've now gone down a Scott McGleish rabbit hole.

He's still playing! AT 51! According to Wikipedia his 15th on the all time appearance list for male footballers with 1,108!

Just looked at this game and McGleish came on in the 82nd minute and scored the winner in the 83rd minute! What a player he was for us!

I'm guessing that was meant to be 2002 so over 20 years without a win at Meadow Lane. There was quite a few seasons when our paths didn't cross but it still feels like a long time. I still remember them beating us at Layer Road in our away kit that we hadn't even worn yet! I actually expected us to get beat last night so was pleased with a point, that's three games in a row where I've predicted the wrong outcome. 42 points for the season now, 13 points better off than last season and better than the three seasons before that too. Progress has been slow and steady but it's definitely there.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying but too dependent on loanees? Apart from McDonnell we're barely playing any loanees currently. We have a few in the squad right now but I think most are here to see if they'd be right for a permanent signing. I would actually suggest this is arguably the least dependent we've been on loanees for quite some time.

There have been times when 68 or 69 points has been enough for 7th in League Two and Lincoln got in on 66 points in 2005-06 but generally, as wessex suggested, you need 70+ points and even then it's sometimes not enough. We got 70 points in 2018-19 season and finished 8th and more recently Sutton got 76 points in 2021-22 and still missed out. For me we've left ourselves too much to do and it's not like we've got to overcome just one team to finish 7th, there are nine clubs within nine points of 7th spot and all of them have at least one game in hand. I guess the one thing that does work in our favour is that we've got to play most of the teams around us in the table so we do have the opportunity to take points off them. 30+ points from 16 games though is a massive ask from a team that has only won nine in the league this season. In the last 19 seasons, not including 2019-20 due to Covid, our best return from our last 16 matches has been 25 points back in 2016-17 and we average less than 20 points. I think it's maybe a season too soon for us.

20 years ago we finished 15th in League One with 59 points. We had one of the best defences in the division and a positive goal difference but we drew too many games. Sound familiar? We all know what happened the following season...

It's not been easy predicting Col U results this season with some surprising results both for and against. Durham must've picked up some decent points recently though.

Probably Tovide but if you're only referring to those that came from other clubs then I think it's Kelleher who's been here the longest. I think Kelleher, Smith, Read, Iandolo, Edwards and Egbo are the only players, not from the academy, who didn't join after the Cowley brothers.

Turns out it was the Notts County 5-4 last season so actually not that long ago really. Funny that Danny and Nicky were in charge of Lincoln then. Last appearance for now hopefully, I genuinely believe he'll be back one day.

Such a shame this is the case but can't say I'm surprised sadly.

Also Sam Okafor...he's one of our own.

Fitting that Bishop and Edwards both scored given the hatchet job Walsall did on them earlier in the season. Is Bishop becoming the player we hoped he could be for us? Edwards seems to be growing in confidence with every game and is such a dangerous player right now. When was the last time we beat top of the league? I remember us beating Lincoln 3-0 in the final match of the 2018/19 season but not sure whether that was the last time or not.

We've had Iandolo since the beginning of last season. He's been badly missed when he's been injured or suspended. Was probably one of the reasons Garner lost his job. Now 27 years old and approaching 60 appearances for the U's. Definitely worth another two year deal in my opinion.

DId they say anything about Blackpool? I heard they were prepared to pay the money but the club/player didn't think the move was right.

Returnees
at 08:59 7 Feb 2025

With the return of Kane Vincent-Young this week it got me to thinking of successful returnees to Col U, and unsuccessful ones too. When it comes to returnees who comes to mind for you? For me they have to have been a Col U player, not a loanee, who left to join another club and then re-joined at a later date.

I'll kick off with Steve McGavin. Made 70 appearances between 1992 and 1994 scoring 19 goals. Left for Birmingham and returned via Wycombe, Southend and Northampton in 1999. Went on to make another 80+ appearances scoring 19 times including two in the famous 5-4 victory over Bristol Rovers. Was such at classy player for us. His son, Brett, was at Ipswich for a while and is having a very good season for Yeovil in the National League this season.

I guess they had to plan and recruit as if he were going. He may not be back from his latest injury for a while anyway so in that respect we're not carrying an extra player. I think a number of the signings in this window have been with one eye on next season as quite a few of them will be out of contract in the summer.

Goodliffe was very unfortunate to get that injury when he did. I fully expect him to be back and in the squad, maybe even starting, next season.

Maybe we should be thanking Robbie rather than God.
