Film 2025 17:13 - Jan 10 with 1243 views | E17hoop | To save polluting the TV thread, I thought I'd start a thread for the films we've seen this year. I saw A Real Pain the other day and it's a really nicely put together piece by Jesse Eisenberg. It unpeels like an onion, with each layer getting closer to the central pint. Good film. Babygirl could have been so much better. Nicole Kidman does well but it all feels a bit 'off'. Rewatched Anatomy of a Fall the other day - brilliant.

Film 2025 on 17:19 - Jan 10 with 1174 views | FDC | +1 for Anatomy of a Fall, excellent film Most the films I've watched recently are on the horror film thread! Edit. Watched The Conclave last week, found it really dull and didn't finish it. Watched Kneecap a while ago, fictionalized origin story of the Irish hip hop group of the same name. Madcap, entertaining, and the band members playing themselves are surprisingly good! I enjoyed it a lot, and the music is ace. Edit again: recently watched Things Will Be Different. Low budget time loop thing. Bit niche, but it was my jam. Interesting take on the genre, with some original ideas and nice twists [Post edited 10 Jan 17:26]

Film 2025 on 17:35 - Jan 10 with 1114 views | simmo | Funnily enough I decided to try and keep a record of all the films I watch this year - new and old. I always try and track them but inevitably miss out. Here's my list so far. 1) The Seven Five - documentary about corrupt police in New York which were so audacious it brought about major changes in the NYPD. Interviews all the key people involved including a former drug kingpin that has the most incredible monobrow you've ever seen. 2) The Waterboy - Old school Adam Sandler stupid comedy, which I think you either like or don't, but I introduced it to my 16 year old lad. Kathy Bates is in it which feels strange now. 3) Nosferatu (cinema) - I'm not typically a horror fan but this was really pretty good. True to the source material and looked/sounded amazing. One of those films elevated by seeing it at the cinema for sure, so if you're into this kind of stuff, you should go. 4) Gattaca - Sci-Fi with a great 90's/00's cast. I love this film and rewatched for the first time in ages. It's also where Ethan Hawke met Uma Thurman, so is the reason we have Maya Hawke now popping up all over the place. 5) State of Grace - Early 90's crime film with again, a great cast inc Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, Ed Harris, etc. It's a bit meh tbh, considering it's about undercover police and NY crime which is right in my wheel house... Tonight I'm watching 'Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person' which is a horror comedy someone said was a bit like a more serious What We Do In The Shadows, which I really love. I'm also going to watch A Real Pain this weekend as a friend recommended it and thought I'd enjoy it, although I really don't like Jesse Eisenberg much, I love everything Kieran Culker has done so far. Will let you know my thoughts! Anatomy of a Fall has been on my must see list for months, along with Zone of Interest, I just don't ever seem to be in the mood for serious drama/dialogue... Film 2025 on 17:57 - Jan 10 with 1029 views | hubble | Watched 'My Old Ass' with multigenerational audience of fam and friends over Xmas and everyone liked it. Thought it was going to be some Gen Z nonsense, turns out it was a funny, warm, feelgood movie... and all it starts with a mushroom trip. Plus it features the delectable Aubrey Plaza.

Film 2025 on 18:00 - Jan 10 with 1021 views | BrianMcCarthy | I really liked 'Conclave'. Films with lots of dialogue and very few settings can sometimes come across as stage plays masqurading as films and I can find that distracting and a bit boring, but I thought 'Conclave' was done so well, and the acting was so good that the film zipped along really nicely. Re-watched 'Dances with Wolves' during the week. Utterly superb. Even better than I'd remembered. Great idea for a thread, E17. Thanks.

I saw Conclave last week and thought it was outstanding in every way - the narrative, acting, sound and visuals I thought were all excellent. Different strokes and all that I guess. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes! My wife picked this and i also expected it to be frothy nonsense but ended up loving it. It's from Margot Robbie's Lucky Chap production company, which also made Saltburn, and Promising Young Woman. Real surprise hit for me, found the ending genuinely moving Re Nosferatu, really looking forward to seeing this

There were some nice shots for sure. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it, it just didn't grab me for some reason
Film 2025 on 20:11 - Jan 10 with 739 views | R_from_afar | I really don't watch many films but we took ourselves off to the cinema yesterday to watch "We live in time'. It's a story about the relationship between a top (female) chef and a bloke who works for a very famous British food company. I won't say who, it will spoil the surprise . The film is based on a series of episodes years apart and is poignant, tense and unpredictable, but also sprinkled with humour. The dialogue was superb. I loved it

Film 2025 on 20:40 - Jan 10 with 685 views | stevec | Went and saw Conclave yesterday. Good actors, good acting but the film is utter b*llocks. An out and out tick box job designed to get as many Oscar nominations as possible. By the end the script had literally disappeared up its own …, well I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone who wants to see it. Expect it to do well during the awards season.

Watched Bank of Dave just last night, didn't expect too much, but really enjoyed it. A simple story well told, who doesn't like it when a plucky hero sticks it to the man? Also watched Dark Waters with Mark Ruffalo, a little slow in places, but I defy you not to be outraged as the scale of deception and callousness of corporate America unfolds. Bastards.

I'd read the book of Conclave, following a recommendation from OH. So I knew the shocking ending. It's the political machinations that drive the plot. Fiennnes and Tucci are superb and the cinematography is exquisite. Saw it in Paris once wet Tuesday, prior to heading off from CDG.. English voices with French subtitles a bit disconcerting.
