Might be a good time to remember that Argentina lost their first game of the world cup against Saudi Arabia.

Or maybe we're just rubbish ๐Ÿ˜€

In 1990 we were awful against Ireland and 96 rubbish against the Swiss. Surely too many good players to not do well.

The good thing to take away from that is that Mainoo wonโ€™t play much now, I donโ€™t think. I reckon Wharton and TAA have leapfrogged him. Also, Gordon playing and offering very little probably helps Ezeโ€™s chances of game time, which makes England better, because Eze is better than Gordon, especially in tight spaces against a deep defence.

Iโ€™d actually say the biggest issue is left back. Trippier looks miles off it. And Shaw is going to be very rusty even if his injury has healed. They should have taken Mitchell, IMO.

If only we had a player who could take people on , win free kicks and make something out of nothing , oh we do but he isnโ€™t in the squad , Thanks Gareth

Yes PP. Eze was given 15 minutes, in which time he saw very little of the ball. It reminds me of when Alf Ramsey (I think) brought Marsh on for his debut, but gave him only eight minutes. Almost as if playing them meant taking a risk.

Gordon is not ready and should have been out of the squad, and Grealish should have been retained in the squad as he would have broken down Iceland, the same as Eze started to do when he came on, showing how Gordon is not ready. I suspect even Southgash won't play him again now.

Trippier looks past it; Tyrick Mitchell or Rico Hency should have been taken instead. Having only one known LB in the squad who is injured is abysmal management and fantasy thinking by Southgash.

Mainoo was okay, but he's not the answer against these teams. He got caught out for their Goal, should have been back when Rice went forward and Mainoo did not see the danger until it was too late. TTA should be the one to start against these types of defensive teams as then Rice knows he has to be back all the time as TTA will go forward. Palmer was okay and probably could play better than Foden in the middle. Foden was swamped and that was interesting as now we know how he can be stopped, but it frees up space which Gordon had a lot of but did little with.

In the first half, Southgash tried to lure Iceland into following Kane into the middle (hence his dropping deep) for Foden to push up and get the threw balls. It didn't work, as there was no one to thread those balls, Palmer was on the wing and Foden who could do it was expecting to receive it, and Iceland didn't fall for it. Hence, 45 minutes were wasted on this one pitiful tactic, which was obviously not working after 15 minutes when Iceland did not follow Kane all the way into the middle.

What we learned is that Gordon should not be there and Mainoo should only be used against attacking teams and maybe even not then as he's still not there yet. TTA is up for it, but really needs to be higher up the field in middle to make an impact. Tripper is past it, maybe Gomez is better? Konsa looked decent and possibly better than Guรฉhi, who is okay but has zero idea going forward and won't score from corners like Konsa can. Stones had his usual one terrible game out of five. Lets hope he goes back to his world class levels, he often does that. One game in five Stones will be gash for whatever reason and then he goes back to being amazing again. I suspect its a concentration thing, but how knows, Pep doesn't.

Gordon, Palmer won't start and possibly Mainoo will be sub as well.
Saka, Bellingham to come in, with Foden moved to the left and I suspect he will put TTA in the middle with Rice told to stay back all the time.

In Southgash we trust.

Not sure where you get the Gordon thing from. In the first half he was literally the only outlet going forward and had pace to burn. Our issue was they let us go wide and we decided to only do that down the left.

Never knowingly right.

On previous England threads havnโ€™t you demanded Foden start? Apologies if mistaken.

Grealish himself said heโ€™d had a bad season and some mental health difficulties.

I have indeed and Foden is a great talent player
My point is we have a talent like Grealish who can offer something different Win free kicks , take people on , drive us forward I have a feeling that Denmark and Serbia will park the bus and hit us with a set piece, if that happens I donโ€™t fancy our chances breaking them down with Southgates crab one paced football

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot Thatโ€™s there thatโ€™s two, and thatโ€™s Bowles Brian Moore

I like Gordon. His work rate off the ball is very good too.

Left-back is a problem without doubt. Itโ€™s mental to me Mitchell isnโ€™t in the squad. 26 players and we canโ€™t find a spot for a fit left-back so itโ€™s Shaw who wonโ€™t be close to match fit or Trippier who is a weak link anyway and offers no width. Mitchell had a great end to the season.

Clearly the problem is clear

Our all time top scorer and bundesliga golden boot has never ever won a trophy in his life

Clearly the problem as always is Kane - Harry Kane

QPR could sign Harry Kane and we would be certainties to get relegated.

The man has some kind of voodoo curse on him and he will never ever win any trophy even I fear the EFL FA Vase is a step too far !!!!

I do not like a right footer playing left back.....balance is all wrong - always coming inside to his natural foot, not good for many reasons. Shaw is nowhere near being fit, hopefully he will get fit quickly perhaps. Southgate should have primed a LB to pick and not just relied on Shaw, who knows if he will be fit and who knows if his injury will not recur. Another poor decision from our Manager.

Agreed and they aren't going to want to get injured in a warm up game either. The result means as little as it would have if we'd won 8-0.

I worry that the shape of the team is wrong.

Am sure Mainoo and Wharton will be great players but they aren't ready yet to go deep into a tournament.

I'd like to see us move back to the 433 that worked well at the world cup with Rice, Bellingham and Gallagher in the middle behind Kane, Saka and Foden.
Gordon, Eze, Palmer, Bowen are completely untested at this level and need to be wildcards from the bench

Left back has been an issue this season but they've selected Shaw so there must be some sort of hope that he'll be available. Straw-clutching, I know, but they'll have had medical assessments that see him taking part in some way.

To be honest, I'm not sure if there is better option and I hate seeing players in England shirts stuffed into unfamiliar roles simply to cover a poor squad selection (e.g. Emile Heskey playing left wing because Eriksson went for names not specialists).

Went to the game last night, was so poor England have some very good individual players but nowhere near a good team. The gaps in midfield were so big, was quite easy for Iceland to get in on goal and a better side would have beaten us by 3 or 4

Foden got his chance as a number 10 and showed why he should play on the left, we just seemed to have every player wanting to be in the middle to play a killer pass even Kane and not one player running in behind to get on the end of that pass. Reluctance to have a shot as well was worrying

Southgate has his work cut out here to get this group to meet the massive expectations when key players like Kane, Stones, Foden and Walker look miles off it at the moment.

On that evidence it was a mistake not to take Grealish as he offers something different

Saying all that I've seen many England teams look great in these games and do nothing when it matters so there is time to sort out the obvious issues in the team

Commentary last night said they expect him to play โ€œsome partโ€ of the second game. So weโ€™re banking on him being immediately up to it which just seems illogical to me.

I think this loss is probably way better than a big win for England because it puts their heads back in the place it has to be to win it all.
Its not up front they have issues (nobody has more firepower than them IMO) but at the back and now with Stones injured his experience will be a massive loss if its serious.
Teams will try the PL approch to playing Man City lock them out and hit them on the counter and England are vunerable here IMO.
However once England take the lead and they will in most games I think teams are going to have to come out then Foden etc will run wild .
A clear path to the Semis then 2 hard battles and its theirs I believe

England look a mess to the counter attack, Mainoo is a big problem here as he is for Man Utd, good on the ball and winning the ball back but has no positional sense yet

I see most of the media today have already started the witch hunt against the players and in particular they all seemed to choose an image of Saka who had only been on the pitch for the last 25 minutes... So that ugly theme will probably rear its head again if and when we bow out. I seriously hate our press.

Another huge factor is the return of Bellingham to that midfield. Doubt you'll see teams waltzing through there when he's playing.

For me, England have the same problems they've had for at least 4 years. Great going forward but hugely vulnerable defensively. No fit LB, no backup for Walker. If Stones is injured then neither CB will inspire confidence.
Qtr or semi finals max.

Yes, I've always thought that Eze is most effectively used as a 10 with freedom to roam across the width and depth of at least the attacking half, than as a winger based on the side line.

Except we've actually been accused of being too defensive/conservative and Southgate of picking favourites and players not in form. Reason we didn't win the last Euros according to many.

So he picks in form players, leaves out some favourites and gets slaughtered anyway.
