They’re tweeting that their “matchday operations” are being restricted for the home game against Barrow on Sunday for reasons that they don’t want to divulge at the moment.
The bottom line is that the crowd capacity is limited to 920 and there will be no cash admissions on the day.
Wonder what that’s all about?

I was under the impression that the Bars at the Crown Oil Arena were run by the football club and any income went to them. If that is so Hornets can hardly be held responsible for the prices charged on Sunday.
To answer the comment re spectators being able to sit in the stand an consume alcohol its a simple answer. Rugby League fans know how to behave unlike some football fans. I could sit supporting Hornets sat next to an Oldham Rugby supporter with both of us enjoying a beer.
The following day we would have to sit in separate stands if Rochdale AFC were playing Oldham. Oh and no alcohol sat watching the match.
We might have our problems but at least know how to behave.

Knowing how to behave will stand you in good stead when looking for facilities you can afford.

I feel for the decent Hornets fans. Unfortunately for them, numpties like yourself with bizarre superiority complex’ will always create ill feeling.

I think your first and last paragraphs probably sum up the issue
Hornets have problems and to ensure the FC aren’t out of pocket they have had to increase the beer prices to cover their costs. Looks to me like the FC will no longer inadvertently subsidise Hornets match day operations. To me that seems fair

Given the amount of bleating from some Hornets fans over the years about the horrors of being resident at Spotland, you would have thought they'd have shown some initiative to be independent from RAFC in every way.

They could build the "we know how to behave stadium", move there and charge £1.50 a pint.

Actions speak louder than words. Sadly, they like the words better - the easy option.

That said, I wish Hornets well for a successful season.

The only bleating I can recall is when a game against York was called off about an hour or so before kickoff apparently due to high winds. ( It was stressed it had nothing to do with an upcoming Dale game )At kickoff time a feather would have fallen to the ground. I certainly agree that Hornets should move on. I am sure that the increase in the beer prices are not restricted to Hornets fans...We'll find out on Saturday.

Behave. I’ve not got time at the moment but I’m sure I could find many more examples than just ONE occasion.

Anyway, who cares what Rugger fans have to pay for a drink? You’re all so well behaved compared to us common football fans so I’m sure you won’t kick up a fuss. My stance towards Hornets has softened over the years as I know quite a few fans of theirs and they’re good chaps. People like BIG Doug though can quickly change a mind back.

Anyway, an alternative option is to go to another pub if you don’t like it, or even go without a drink for the duration of the game.

You’re welcome.

As you say if you don’t like the prices don’t use the bar. I won’t be going in the bar in future. I never drank during the game anyway but I liked a pint or two after the game whilst the respective coaches and chairmen were giving their post match views.

I have a clear choice. Pay it or move out.

The price of drinks in hospitality settings always has and always will be very high. You'll alway pay more in restaurants than pubs. Wine mark-ups are typically 2-4x.
Sports stadia are there to put on sport and restaurants food. You can have free tap water at both if you wish. If you want alcohol you will always pay premium prices at both to help pay the bills and put a bit extra in the coffers of those providing it, who set their prices accordingly. One of the advantages of feet is you can vote with them.

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

I have a drink when I watch Rochdale as well, so the price does affect me at both codes. Certainly the Cemetery is an excellent option and will help with Dale's fund raising as well. Having witnessed a young Oldham female fan being verbally abused by a large number of Dale fans and a young Scunthorpe player being taunted on the pitch by so called fans, I think it is not unreasonable to question that behaviour.

Completely agree about the behaviour of Dale “fans” this season at some matches and I don’t go for this “every club has them” bollocks either. It’s a pathetic excuse.

Ive never heard rugby league fans refer to their game as “rugger”. Its a terms used by the twickers mob to refer to the game they play at ‘HQ”.

I dont think you would hear it used in the valleys or tother side of the irish sea. Its difficult to say unless you have a gob full of plums.

With respect Id imagine your rent on a domestic property is very different to that of a commercial lease agreement.

You cant just because you have hit on hard times and are struggling act in an hostile or arbitrary way when you have contractual responsibilities. Not unless you have agreed rent review dates of course, however even then there is normally set criteria for increase within a contract and its not just open season to take a tenants trousers down.

https://www.wigantoday.net/sport/rugby-league/wigan-warriors-in-negotiations-wit

I think the comparators with Wigan are probably good ones.

For the DW Stadium, football club owns 85%, council owns 15%. Football club control the lease.

"Radlinski, referencing an interview Latics chairman Talal Al Hammad gave Wigantoday, said: "You will have seen that the new owner has made a visit to the town recently and made some claims about the stadium being a football stadium. The reality is it is.

"We’re tenants of the stadium and they've come in with new ownership with a with a new chief executive who I meet every week and I have a really good relationship.

"And they've made some bold claims that they're going to turn the stadium blue and all this kind of stuff. We can't do anything about that, unfortunately. So, we'll be working strong to build our relationships and to try and work it through. They have said to us that our rent will be going up, which we're working through at the moment. The negotiations are ongoing and they’re in the right spirit.

Here the football club owns 100% of the stadium and has done since 2016 so before the current Hornets set-up was in place in 2020 and before the current board of the football club was in place.

Fans of either code (or both) will have their say but in making them tenant in 2016, Rochdale Council sold Rochdale Hornets out to being a tenant and the football club to being their landlord.

Those who did that deal for Dale, Hornets and the Council in 2016 might have done a good lease, a bad lease or a really average lease but that is the crux of what the relationship is.

What has happened to RFL funding cuts post-Covid is regrettable for Hornets - as it is for all other RFL clubs - but that is not the landlord's problem and a lease is a lease.

Wigan being a good and comparable example and there Wigan are putting rent up, not down.

But its hardly comparable is it.

You do understand that we acquired 100% ownership of the stadium and therefore Hornets share of it as part of a deal / agreement for Hornets to become long term tenants at sustainable rates for a set period of time?

Agreements are agreements, contracts are contracts. Regardless of changes of ownership, chairmen and board members a deal is a deal for its duration.

Its going back a few years now and i am not getting any younger that is for certain, but if my memory serves me right Hornets lease got set for 25/30 years i think? which was made public at the time. It was very clearly a mutually beneficial arrangement, affordable for them to be able to operate sustainably and crucially for us enabling full ownership of an asset worth millions of pounds and this should always be respected and never forgotten.

Hornets despite funding cuts in their sport seem to be under solid ownership, debt free and building steadily and sustainably. If however we are now in a poor position and struggling to meet our obligations in our current state that is not or should not be Hornets problem.

Hi RG,

I think the arrangements are very comparable.

Wigan FC are the landlord or the DW Stadium and Wigan Warriors are their tenant.

Rochdale AFC are the landlord for Spotland Stadium and Rochdale Hornets are their tenant.

How Rochdale Hornets ended up as a tenant (and for how long and on what terms) is irrelevant now. What is relevant, as you say, is that both parties operate correct their side of any commercially negotiated lease that exists.

With regards, to the "under ambitious ownership, debt free and building steadily and sustainably., can that statement be made yet?

It looks to me like the previous Rochdale Hornets ceased in 2020 and in June 2020 a brand new legal entity was formed. I don't recall a fanfare of activity on that and nor can I find anything about it online - it seems a little odd.

That would make the current Rochdale Hornets less than 2 years old.

Regardless that new legal entity - Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Football Club Limited - doesn't appear to have a lot of substance.

Fortunately, its accounts to November 2021 are due in the next ten days. Then we can see if the latest reincarnation of Rochdale Hornets is sustainable and/or debt free.

Hardly comparable as with respect to Hornets Wigan Warriors are a huge club with serious revenue streams at the elite level and arguably the biggest name in that sport. Athletic are also a different proposition to us with private ownership and considerable wealth now in their boardroom it would seem.

I will concede i wouldn't have a clue about Warriors lease or arrangements though but i do remember well how we acquired the stadium and how the current arrangements were born which got made to enable us to acquire a valuable asset in full and to ensure Hornets have a sustainable and affordable tenancy which has always been public knowledge in Rochdale.

Re the rugby club i am only going off what i read in the local papers and hear from people in the town but you do understand a company conversion right?

https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/IP030618

It would seem to me the company was taken over and converted from a society (members owned) model into private limited (now owned equally by five businessmen it would seem from companies house records which you kindly direct me to) and i am pretty sure that in these cases all assets and liabilities carry forward so effectively nothing changes legally.

Looks a pretty steady model they now have and I know id rather have five individuals with a few quid owning and running a club than have fans in the boardroom posting £1.2m losses, fighting relegation from the bottom tier of the football league and trying desperately to scratch together funds from Joe pubic to cover legal costs.

How much money do those five have then?

How does this compare to those involved at RAFC?

How do the accounts at Hornets compare to those at RAFC?

Links to all information provided would be beneficial.

Note: nothing against Hornets at all. Hope that the relationship between the clubs is good and to the benefit of both clubs. Nothing is gained if it’s isn’t, something both sides should always be aware of. If people have opinions, that’s fine, but back them up with clear, detailed facts.

Sorry fella i work for a living and have a life also so don't spend a great deal of time on internet forums.

There are noises in the town about the way the new regime at the club are "allegedly" going about things with Hornets.

If true i for one am embarrassed as in our position we find ourselves right now we should be making friends and influencing as i am pretty sure senior councillors and those who support all sport in ROCHDALE wont want to see any division or problems.

Wouldn't have a clue about the personal wealth of individuals in either business and not really interested.

There are no accounts posted for Hornets so again not a clue. Football and RL are not comparable though in terms of revenues and Hornets i imagine is small change.

Couldn't agree more and seems we are on the same page in respect of your final comment and would add that a strong relationship between the clubs is good and not only to the benefit of both clubs but sport generally in our town & borough.
