PSA testing at Spotland Saturday 19th Jan 06:53 - Jan 15 with 7401 views | ColDale | Supporters are reminded that, prior to our home match against Fleetwood Town on Saturday 19th January, the Club are holding a PSA testing day. Held in conjunction with the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal (BKPCA), it tests for prostate cancer — a disease which affects one in eight men in the UK. All men aged 50 and over, or 45 and over with a family history of cancer, are welcome to attend. Testing will be done between 11am and 2pm in the Study Centre, located on Willbutts Lane. The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood, and around 2,000 men have been tested to date and least 100 lives have been saved by this approach. Those being tested will be asked for a minimum £5 donation, with the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal funding the remainder of the test’s costs. In 2015, following his own diagnosis, Burnley’s vice-chairman Barry Kilby launched the appeal to provide opportunities for men to be tested for prostate cancer — a disease which affects one in eight men in the UK. Initially launched at the Premier League club, other clubs from the Premier League and the EFL, including Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth, have arranged a testing day at their club. Keen for Dale fans to benefit from this potentially life-saving initiative, we are the latest to add our support to it. Barry Kilby said: “I’m delighted that Rochdale Football Club have got involved. “One of the problems with prostate cancer, as it was with me, is that it becomes advanced before you see any symptoms. “This blood test will show if there is something wrong and act as the warning in the early stages. We’ve saved well over 100 lives doing it like this. “When we first launched this at Burnley, we ran out of needles! We thought we’d get around 200 — we actually got to 400 and odd. “It’s gaining now and it has been really successful way of getting men tested, using the football link. “I hope as many people as possible get themselves tested on the day — I can’t stress enough how important it is to do so.” Dale Manager Keith Hill will be amongst those tested on the day. Joe Thompson and Ollie Rathbone recently attended Rochdale Infirmary to officially launch the promotion of the event, handing out leaflets to outpatients with the help of our Community Trust team. In addition, thanks to our friends at the Pennine Acute Trust, leaflets will be distributed to over 500 homes across the Borough in the next few weeks.

PSA testing at Spotland Saturday 19th Jan on 08:41 - Jan 15 with 5205 views | DaleiLama | Did a bit of research around this and the extract below is taken from the NHS website. It has clickable links which won't work on here so I'm posting the link to the webpage where the links will work. It gives background and dos and don'ts if you are planning to have a test. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/prostate-cancer/should-i-have-psa-test/ The PSA test is a blood test to help detect prostate cancer. But it's not perfect and won't find all prostate cancers. The test, which can be done at a GP surgery, measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein made only by the prostate gland. Some of it leaks into your blood, but how much depends on your age and the health of your prostate. There's currently no national screening programme for prostate cancer in the UK because the PSA test is not always accurate. Before deciding to have the PSA test, you may want to talk to your GP and practice nurse, as well as your partner or a friend or family member. You have a higher risk of prostate cancer if you: have a family history of prostate cancer are of black ethnic origin are overweight or obese What's a raised PSA level? The amount of PSA in your blood is measured in nanograms of PSA per millilitre of blood (ng/ml). If you're aged 50 to 69, raised PSA is 3ng/ml or higher. A raised PSA level in your blood may be a sign of prostate cancer, but it can also be a sign of another condition that's not cancer, such as: an enlarged prostate prostatitis urinary infection How accurate is the PSA test? About 3 in 4 men with a raised PSA level will not have cancer. The PSA test can also miss about 15% of cancers. Pros and cons of the PSA test Pros: it may reassure you if the test result is normal it can find early signs of cancer, meaning you can get treated early PSA testing may reduce your risk of dying if you do have cancer Cons: it can miss cancer and provide false reassurance it may lead to unnecessary worry and medical tests when there's no cancer it cannot tell the difference between slow-growing and fast-growing cancers it may make you worry by finding a slow-growing cancer that may never cause any problems Before having the test If you're having a PSA test, you should not have: ejaculated in the past 48 hours exercised heavily in the past 48 hours a urinary infection had a prostate biopsy in the past 6 weeks Each of these may give an inaccurate PSA reading. Digital rectal examination (DRE) Your GP may also perform a digital rectal examination (DRE) to feel for any changes to your prostate gland. A DRE is done by inserting a gloved, lubricated finger into your back passage. A DRE on its own is not enough to detect cancer. Biopsy If you have a raised PSA level, you may need other tests, such as a biopsy. This involves taking small samples of your prostate and checking them for cancer. Biopsies miss 1 in 5 prostate cancers and can sometimes cause complications. The most common are bleeding and infections. If you have prostate cancer If you have prostate cancer, your specialist will discuss your options with you. Possible treatments include: watchful waiting active surveillance radical prostatectomy (surgery) radiotherapy Side effects of some treatments can include problems with erections, loss of fertility and incontinence. You should talk to your cancer specialist about the benefits and risks of any treatment before you begin.

It's a 5 minute job at most. Just like any other request for a blood sample. Easy, peasy. Results back in about a week. Mine was slightly raised, follow up to urology consultant, biopsy, (ouch) - all clear. Get it done.....

It's just like any other blood test. Five minutes whilst the nurse takes a sample then several days wait for the results. I was at the Crem last week for a funeral of an ex workmate of mine who ignored his Prostate symptoms until it was too late. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Good man.You know it makes sense. I was treated for prostate cancer two years ago. Elected for radiotherapy at Christies and now 100% all clear. I have a routine PSA done every 6 months as a hospital follow up check. To actually take the amount of blood they need to test takes less than a minute. You'll wait longer in the queue to get it done. A good friend of mine who seemed as fit as a fiddle had one done some years ago. It came back with a reading high enough to warrant further investigations and in short it saved his life as they caught it in time. The earlier the better with prostate cancer.

For me the NHS site perhaps places too much emphasis on uncertainty and not enough on the prevention side. Good to know that Daleys have had positive experiences of tests/treatments too! Even better to know that the fiver goes to a good cause. Can you get a DRE if you pay a tenner? (probably shouldn't joke about such things but sometimes a bit of black humour helps the world go round)

I had an enlarged prostate for years. One night I got up for a pee and nothing came out ! They were already actively monitoring the cancer I had. When the " retention " occurred I decided to have the prostate removed and kill two birds with one stone. No regrets now.

Your not wrong DL... To be honest everytime I go for the DRE test the first thing I look at is the size of the guys hands..the last one was a big African descent GP..enormous fingers!! However it was done brilliantly..although when he put his trainers on and took a run up I was slightly concerned Have no fears..theres nothing to fear but fear itself as they say.
PSA testing at Spotland Saturday 19th Jan on 13:58 - Jan 15 with 4780 views | Shun | Some good, well-informed posts on here already. It’s important for anyone having a PSA blood test to be counselled in its efficacy. Basically it’s one of the least accurate tests the NHS can offer, but even some accuracy is better than nothing. And a potentially life-saving three-minute blood test at an excellent event like this is well worth it. A digital rectal examination (finger up the bum) will be offered if the bloods come back abnormal. It’s also important to mention that the vast vast majority of men (95%+) will experience prostate enlargening as they age, but that shouldn’t detract anyone from reporting any abnormal symptoms (urinary retention, stopping and starting while urinating, ‘dribbling’, the urge to go but nothing coming out, or a weak flow are all common symptoms).

The standard type of GP MoT visit doesn't normally include the PSA test, because many GPs find it onerous to undertake due to it's unreliability. Most GPs will oblige if you present with symptoms - which can sometimes be too late Regarding the MoT in general, i think different Practices have different policies in terms of offering it. There may be some info on your Practice website or a Contact option

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-health-check/nhs-health-check/ If you read all the way through, the wording says you can "expect" to receive an appointment, but goes on to say what to do if your GP doesn't offer one...

PSA testing at Spotland Saturday 19th Jan on 16:14 - Jan 15 with 4642 views | aleanddale | if you are male and 50+ then go for the test. The most reassuring thing I have ever heard is if diagnosed early enough you are more likely to die with it than because of it. Raised levels might prompt further investigation ( the dreaded finger ) but the alternative to some discomfort is far far worse.

I am fortunate that my GP practice sends for me every year for a full MOT, including (but not exclusive to) cholesterol, BP, liver & kidney function, diabetes, respiratory test, urine samples for a variety of reasons. It's 10 minutes out of my life, which might just be the most important 10 minutes OF my life. I'm always naturally apprehensive when the results are returned, but very glad that they do it.

The NHS health check (the MOT/wellman clinic/whatever you want to call it) should be offered to everyone between the ages of 40 and 75. As DA, points out, practices will vary about how they offer it to you, but it’s very much in their interest to offer you one as it’s one of the ways they get paid! It should be a 5-yearly check, unless you’re deemed at risk (basically, high cholesterol or high BP, among other things) then it’ll be annual. And, tbf, if you’re 40+ or certainly if you’re 50+ then you’d be very lucky indeed to not be classified as such. Again though, as DA points out, the PSA isn’t routinely offered in this kind of ‘MOT’ check but any man above 50 should request it. Happy peeing, gentlemen!

I’m 40 and went to the doctors in Littleborough with a stomach injury a couple of week back (caused I think by running). The doctor offered me an MOT due to just turning 40. It’s not the big one you get at 50, according to the doctor, but tests for quite a few things. Took my bloods the week after and I await my results. I’d recommend anyone getting it done, painless, takes no time, and will identify any issues. Good on the Dale for doing these Prostrate checks, think I’ll be heading over.
