Swansea City : Sam Gallagher in profile, but why ? Thursday, 6th Jun 2024 08:00 by Keith Haynes It has been mentioned by another outlet that Sam Gallagher currently contracted to Blackburn Rovers in League One is a target for the Swans. We’ve done some research and put a huge red marker on the player due to his long list of injuries Gallagher missed a big chunk of last season (Sept to Jan) with a calf injury, the second of his career, the last one in 2018 kept him out for five weeks. In fact it makes you wonder why the Swans would even consider going for a player who attracts injuries and misses games most seasons. Last year he was out with what was described as a ‘knock’ for twelve days and he lost another eight days to a leg injury. The injury as stated that kept him out from September to January was a nasty calf issue. When he returned he played thirteen games for Rovers until the end of the season and scored one goal. The majority of those games at centre forward. At twenty nine in September it’s a big ask by any club to expect him to go a season without the potential for another long term injury. John Eustace stated last season they had to manage Sam very carefully as he was receiving extra treatment within the training week even when fit. Where outlets are getting this information is interesting as well, the Swans believe it or not would be better off keeping Jerry Yates as opposed to chasing Sam Gallagher. Allegedly he was the subject of an offer or three by Ipswich Town in January, and talk around that time was it was to maintain their promotion push. That’s a fact, but this doesn’t sound right. It’s doomed to fail. As we know there have been links between Rovers and the Swans to Liam Cullen, he doesn’t want to play in a struggling team away from home now international recognition has seen him included in most Wales squads. Liam scored in an international for his country last season, to step down a league in time could be damaging. And of course would Liam accept it ? If the Swans are serious about recruiting a real goalscorer then they have to remain focussed on Macauley Langstaff, every transfer is a gamble but it’s far more favourable when you compare scoring records. Sam has only hit double figures in the league once in his career scoring eleven in the 2016/17 season. Last season he scored three in twenty four games. Overall he has bagged thirty four goals in one hundred and seventy six games for Blackburn over six Championship seasons. In his favour he does get played out wide at times, and he has decent pace. His other attribute is his height, 6’4” (194 cms) If it’s goals the Swans want then Sam Gallagher isn’t the answer. If they want to take a huge gamble on his fitness and he stays injury free he would be seen as a decent option out wide. However he has a contract to the end of this coming season with a one year option, and that was only signed two weeks or so ago. We’ve all seen Langstaff’s stats, they are incredible and that’s where Swansea City need to focus, seventy goals in his last ninety one games at Notts County. And you can forget getting drawn in to Langstaff’s comments at the end of last season. That’s what all players say, Notts County followers may well be sucked in but this summer will certainly see them lose their star striker, that’s a certainty. Our in profile series adds facts and stats to the rumours out there. We will continue to write these features as long as the readership of this site want them to be included.
