Ward Prowse Deal In Jeopardy As Scott McTominay Linked With West Ham Thursday, 10th Aug 2023 22:00 James Ward Ward Prowse should perhaps be seeing some big warning signs about joining West Ham United and it could be that the one off transfer saga could be off as it has been revealed that the Hammers may be about to reopen talks with their first choice target Scott McTominay from Manchester United.
West Ham United seem to be in a lot of internal conflict with David Moyes transfer strategy at odds with the Hammers new Director of football Tim Steidten as to just whom they should be signing, JWP is Moyes man and Steidten thinks he is a little too old and overpriced, West Ham's owner David Sullivan is caught in the middle.
Now Hammers News have reported that the journalist that is closest to David Sullivan Sean Whestone, is claiming that the Hammers have now reopened talks with Manchester United for Scott McTominay and that if they can come to an agreement it is the United man they will go for and drop their interest in Ward Prowse.
Whetstone has tweeted:
"Big Twist in the James Ward Prowse deal emerges, it appears that West Ham are still in talks with Manchester United over Scott McTominay and the Hammers will either sign James Ward Prowse or Scott McTominay in the next 72 hours but not both. Neither will be signed in time for Bournemouth"
Whetstone is seen by West Ham fans as a confidant to David Sullivan and if he says something it usually has good foundations.
So it could be that James Ward Prowse will still be a Southampton player on Saturday and could be leading the Saints out against Norwich City on Saturday.
But the fact that even as the deal is about to be done, the Hammers are undecided and backtracking should ring alarm bells for Ward Prowse, he will be very much David Moyes signing and Moyes job is far from secure, although he won the European Conference League, it papered over a few cracks, a late run saw them avoid relegation by only 6 points and with the disagreements with Steidten, a poor start to the season could seem him one of the first managerial casualties in the Premier League.
That could see JWP cast into footballing limbo and he has seen that at first hand with James Bree at Saints being very much a Nathan Jones signing and after his sacking rarely getting a game.
No one can blame Ward Prowse for wanting to get back into the Premier League, but no one wants to see him waste his talent, we would prefer to see him help us back to the top flight, but we are realistic and appreciate his reasons for wanting to leave, whatever happens we wish him all the best and hope that he goes to a club where he can flourish.
Ralph Hasenhuttl famously said when Danny Ings left that "No one wants to be a club legend anymore" the warning signs are there for James Ward Prowse.

Not too fussed either way, I’d he stays then we keep a Prem quality midfielder in the championship who’ll work really well for RM tactics. If he goes the we get in a decent fee for him which can hopefully start to help fund a few new faces come through the door. Either way it’s a win, win in my books

"whatever happens we wish him all the best and hope that he goes to a club where he can flourish." Well said Nick. Whatever anyone thinks about him as a player, surely no one can doubt him as a top top character and loyal servant to the club. If West Ham pull out having taken it this far, then shame on them. The one saving grace would be JWP's character which has led him to keeping silent on everything, so he could continue to hold his head high at St Mary's if he stays. Like you say, whatever happens I wish him all the best.

HythePeer, that's spot on (and appropriately poetic—especially as this whole JWP saga is turning into quite a bore and needs some spicing up).

I really hope he goes. Hes been a cracking player, last chance to cash in. Also I know some people will disagree but in open play I think he is average.

'Saints analysis' on twitter posted that if not for James Ward Prowse's goals and assists, our seasons would have looked as follows: 2016/17 - 13th rather than 8th 2017/18 - Relegated 20th 2018/19 - Survived on goal difference 2019/20 - 6 less points 2020/21 - 17th rather than 15th 2021/22 - Relegated with 28 points 2022/23 - Relegated with 17 points Average player or not he has been our core and I will cheer him on for any premier league side that wants him. Interesting analysis Agrella and certainly shows he's had a greater impact than many say, but I'd like to know it's methodology. Does it assume that we we would have gone for the cheapest of all the alternatives and played with only 10 men in his absence?

I thought he had his medical yesterday and would be confirmed as Wet Spam player today. Also thought they were getting JWP and McTominay with view to JWP playing further forward.

Yeah interesting to think about Frank. Obviously points gained from his outrageous free kick record would be the most important as who is to say that a simple assist couldn't have been done by someone else in his position. W

Whatever the outcome of this messy transfer saga I wish I was reading about a flood of offers for the players we need to get off the payroll. Also, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Moyes walks away from West Ham as the failure to sign Maguire, McTominay or JWP continues to undermine his status.

I agree with everyone wishing the best to JWP. But his situation and that of Lavia is such a mess with rumour, fact, then more rumours creating a total mess and confusion. How on earth Russell Martin can get on with his job - goodness only knows! In the meantime does Danny Ings want to return to us? Do Smallbone and Adams want to leave? I'm not sure if Norwich are in any sort of mess themselves but they must be looking forward to taking us on this week-end!

Happy for him if he goes, happy for us if he stays. He is a superb footballer who will flourish if allowed to venture a bit further up the pitch. The fact h has played so deep and in detriment to his skills shows what a good professional he is. However if this falls apart I don't think even his professionalism would allow him to play Saturday!

JWP is deep in 'be careful what you wish for because you may actually get it' territory

Yes - he has had a medical Monksway - this is wishful thinking I'm afraid. Poor old JWP he must have thought he'd do better than Wet Spam.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process.
