Didn't Dunne sign a one year extension? |

It's not that many years ago that attacking fullbacks were a new thing. 'Attack minded keeper' really is the final frontier |

I personally had no issues with Begovich and wish him all the best. I know Clive wasn't a fan having watched him week in and week out and other people here living locally found it hard to get past his Chelsea connections For me he kept a hell l of a lot of clean sheets especially in the 2nd half of the season- a disproportionate amount for our league position- and allowed us to win vital low scoring games along the way like Blackburn Swansea and -probably most critically of all- Preston. I know nothing at all about Nardy, never heard of him until a few days ago. I am a little disappointed that Walsh has again been jettisoned as our No 1 and wonder when if ever he will be ready. That said a warm welcome to Nardy and the very best wishes for the season ahead. |

Am I right in thinking David Webb was the only uncapped player in that '75/'76 Team? Incidentally, Don Givens was our top scorer that season with 13! There is hope for Dykes yet! |
| Forum Reply | What is your second sport. at 22:58 16 Jun 2024
My children have rekindled interest in sports I used to enjoy back in the day. My daughter is into show-jumping which I used to love watching and do again after a 30 year hiatus. My son plays Gaelic and Hurling at a decent level (for Sligo) and I enjoy watching him play The fact that Sligo are involved in a second-tier tournament that they can compete in has whetted my appetite too, as realistically they were never going to win Sam. Used to play a lot of Table Tennis in my late teens/ early 20's, and have started a club in the school which is good fun. |
| Forum Reply | Armstrong extended at 23:20 12 Jun 2024
Would seem to be very much in the minority here, but I think there is a lot more to come from Armstrong yet and if anyone can improve him it's Marti and his coaching staff. To label him as only having power and pace is disingenuous imo.His goals v Bournemouth (Premier League) and Leicester (Champ champs) were top drawer and very unlucky not to add Ipswich (Champ runners-up) to that list (how often does a shot hit BOTH posts and not go in?) Plus his assists for Paal and Hodge showed vision, composure and technical ability. Does he score or assist often enough? Of course not - but he has both in his locker and proper coaching can improve him. A one year extension is not ideal, but if he hasn't improved by January he can still be off-loaded and no harm done. Think it might be more of a continental thing being brought back from summer holidays than either of these, Planet. Also, the British are very polite and patient so queuing would probably catch on better. Not so likely in Ireland, where even queue for checking in at the airport is usually as wide as it is long |
| Forum Reply | Dykes injured? at 23:47 2 Jun 2024
So a bit conflicted on this . Obviously a lost opportunity for Dykes to have a good tournament and increase his value for the club. Also he seems like a genuine bloke so obviously he is gutted to Melissa the biggest tournament of his life. But ... I am convinced he played well within himself this year to reduce the risk of injury before the Euros - so Karma |
| Forum Reply | Willock - Will He Stay? at 13:45 27 Apr 2024
Just based on TV viewing (what a night!) I thought he was excellent first half, but faded after the break. It might be different for those of you who were there. Whether he (and several others) stay could depend on Eze moving on from Palace. If we were to get a significant cut from his transfer and increased TV revenue, we might have more wriggle room financially. I personally would like Willock to stay. Even under Marti, I still feel he hasn't rediscovered his best form consistently, but he his getting there. Get him on a 3 year deal, and if he its the heights of 2 and a half years ago - cash in this time next year. |

Two ways of looking at it I suppose. You could say failing to kill Plymouth off has come back to bite us immediately. Or you could say a decent away point that the league leaders couldn't achieve.. |

I agree that his ever presence is a positive especially in the context of the debacle we went through 2 years ago. Also it's worth pointing out that his 11 clean sheets leaves him the 5th highest in the Championship. This stat is made more impressive when the top 4 slots are filled with promotion hunting teams including Leeds Leicester and Ipswich. Obviously the form of those in front of him is a factor- Cook and Clark-Slater have been outstanding- but bearing in mind those teams would have been under a lot less pressure defensively than us, I think he has done quite well |

Maybe time to give Walsh or Murphy a go next season when hopefully we won't be mired in a relegation battle |
| Forum Reply | Sunderland stalemate keeps Rangers hanging – Report at 22:44 18 Mar 2024
I think Dykes is more interested in staying fit for the Euros than playing well. He is fine in link up play as shown by his assist v Leicester, but is reluctant to get involved in the physical stuff for fear of getting injured. Unfortunately, this is the strongest part of his game, roughing up CB's and if he is not doing that he is pretty ineffective. Frey on the other hand, is playing for a contract so is much more invested in playing to his maximum. I think Armstrong should be getting more game time too. I take Marti's point that he tires when he starts games, but he should at least get the final 30 if we are chasing a result. |

I am the exact opposite of you Brian (and Nix) when it comes to this mindset. I shudder at reams of data, charts (again for Clive's benefit NOT a dig at Dan) and the like. I'm a poet, literally (albeit largely unpublished) and figuratively. I love the abstract, the oblique and the 'unknown', particularly in the context of a football match. I understand people like you (wife is an accountant, brother a software analyst - whatever that means!), but I cannot relate at all. I don't even like filling in forms! You say that the likes of Gerry Francis was doing this 30 years ago and that fine. Obviously you need a structure and to do your homework on the oppos strengths and weaknesses and plan accordingly, but what Beale is doing here is a world away from that. I worry that football games are already turning into a game of chess and this level of control over a player's movements and decision making is only going to exacerbate and accelerate that. I WANT players to make mistakes (preferably the oppos) and players to produce flashes of genius (ours), but I feel this will eventually be coached out of them and we will be left with a vanilla version of the game we all love. I can imagine a scenario in ten years time when those in attendance, instead of screaming and shouting, will be nodding sagely at each other, as our no 10 executes a perfect 'press' in response to a 'trigger pass'. You can imagine the response of the greatest No 10 we ever had if he was handed this data. |

Clive, this was just a throwaway remark.I gave a deeper explanation of my dislike for this level of analysis - while completely removing Dan from my criticism (the level of detail is seriously impressive) - at the end of the actual piece. You should have seen it there. As for calling each other out , absolutely no problem at all. You should know by now I have the height of respect for both you and your work, but of course if I disagree, I will say so (most of the time anyway - the Hendrick thing just became tedious after a while) and I expect no less in return. I would like to think I do so respectfully. Just to be clear, I am not being in anyway critical of Dan here. But I am very concerned if Beale is seriously gone to this level 'control' over the players actions on the pitch - what does he want? Robots? Of course you need structure and a 'plan' but this is seriously OTT in my view. Football is basically a very SIMPLE, spontaneous and beautiful game to play and watch. But where is the joy in that level of control for the players? I have reviewed my opinion of Beale and not in a good way. But then you see Armstrong swashbuckling around the place and he is clearly not following any 'trigger passes' yet Beale still seems to like him - all very confusing. |

I just don't think Willock has done enough to be on m(any) premier league managers radar. He is not like Eze who was playing at the very top level for us for over two years. Remember, it took Willock most of his first season here to find his feet and last season was curtailed by serious injury. This season- while his two goals have been superb - 2 appearances from 5 is not what they are looking for. I think he would need this full season (or at the very least until Jan) to attract notice higher than the Championship's elite. |

Why not indeed, after all that's pretty much what happened to Wells. Unfortunately we didn't own him so were unable to cash in. (Imagine the craic on here if we HAD owned Wells and decided to sell him to Bristol City!) |
