The Knives Are Out For Russell Martin In The Media But Do They Have Substance
at 14:16:25

Yes. It was very disappointing to lose the first 3 games. But surely we all knew that the Prem would be hard going? Especially as we scraped into it via the playoffs.

I think that we’ve had a massive number of new players injected into the squad, with transfer window only just having closed. This disruption means it will take time for the newbies to find their feet, let alone RM knowing what our best formation should be, and who will be the preferred player in each position.

The key factor is - whatever the game or circumstance - that we support the team to our utmost ability. It is critical that we make our home games uncomfortable as possible for visiting teams by getting behind our team.

It will take time and we need to be patient. We do have a chance to stay up - despite the odds.

If our players ‘feel the love’, they will improve, and our role as supporters is to support the team - whatever the circumstance, as we did throughout the playoffs.

We are in the Premier League now and it will be hard going. The last thing we need is a string of disruptions caused by changing the management team. We know from bitter experience which way that ends…

We need continuity at the club, and a settled - yet purposeful - squad of capable players, playing with confidence, backed loudly by their fans.

Is Stuart Armstrong Heading Out Of St Mary's
at 10:10:02

I agree Peterx.
I'd certainly be upset, should Stuart leave. He was one of the few players who could create chances around the oppositions' goal. A very underated player.

Why Danny Ings Broke Southampton Hearts
at 15:30:25

Many good points made here.

However, I'm not surprised Ings has left. Nobody should be surprised he's left. He made this clear months ago when he refused to sign a new contract.

He's gone, so let's all get over it and move on.

SFC has waxed and waned over the years - but we're still here, and we should enjoy the football while we can.

I suspect that many moaning about loyalty did not support the club through those dark days of SFC dropping through the divisions and nearly out of existence completely. Those who did - know the meaning of loyalty.

99.9% of players are not loyal to anything other than fame and money. Though mainly money it appears...

We're not a big club. We mainly buy players with promise, they get better, we sell them (hopefully) for a big profit - then we start all over again. Simples. What do people not get about this?

We've been here many, many, many times, yet we have survived.

Surely it's the club that's important, isn't it?

Let's stop all the crying and move on! COYRs!

Time To Be Proud Of Southampton Football Club !
at 14:40:52

Bang on Nick! We do now have a squad of quality players, and it is a fact that apart from the tactics adopted by a team, the other major element that determines success from failure is the attitude and motivation of the team. We as supporters, affect that motivation directly. Criticism may be necessary, when needed - but not before a ball has been kicked in a competitive game and certainly not booing during a game.

It may take time for the new team to gel on the pitch and our role is to provide our support to help motivate the players, not to berate them. For example I had a guy sat next to me shouting abuse at 'Redmond' last season at nearly every game he played, even though (as I pointed out to him) he was often directing his ire at Ryan Bertrand! How does that help?!

Is It Time For James Ward Prowse To Leave St Mary's
at 09:46:00

I'm not sure about this. Surely his assists via crosses, corners and free kicks have generated many more goals than the other remaining midfielders? I'd sell Lemina as he's not consistent enough and we'd get big bucks on the back of his occasional good game. Midfield is about hard work/graft and creating chances. Surely passing sideways is a reflection on our attacking prowess?

It Was 46 Years Ago Today !
at 13:10:38

A great article Nick, thanks.

Coincendently my first Saints game was also this game, although it was a few years later that I became a regular supporter and season ticket holder.

Subsequently, I have seen the highs and lows and highs as many have and will continue to support Saints through thick & thin.

To me SFC is family, so I give short shrift to 'supporters' who are overly negative/critical - as if someone's deliberately undermining the clubs' success. Sure. we're under the cosh other moment and it is very frustrating, but bad mouthing the club, the board and individual players does nothing positive.

It takes time to create a successful team. Just ask Alex Ferguson.

Day 11 Still No Incoming
at 11:39:23

I agree with DorsetIan. You don't just pop down the road and pick up a new player from 'Players R Us'.

I'm sure we have a target list - sorted, then we have to approach the player's club, then player/agent, then persuade them to come to the mighty Saints (currently 17th in the Prem!), then negotiate a price & terms and hope we're not gazumped by other clubs in the meantime.

But as Ian said - it's a sellers market and ultimately they can delay a deal until they're sure they'll not get a better price from elsewhere.

Also, I'm not sure every player we approach is excited about the prospect of moving to a club going into a relegation battle.

Nigel Adkins A Thank You From The Fans
at 19:13:54

Indeed a sad day for us all. NA was a good man who got the best from his players, over the past 2.5 seasons. He's always been positive, honest and pragmatic, yet in the top flight he has often seemed unable to make the right tactical move at the right time, for which we paid. Nevertheless, maybe the weight of NC's high expectation and impatience for SFC has now been lifted, and I'm sure he'll go on and enjoy success elsewhere.

What angers me most is the impersonal way the whole dismissal process appears to be done. NA did a lot for us and should have been treated with the respect he deserves.

Now NC seems to have made a rod for his own back, and anything but good results over the coming weeks will be deemed failure by us all.

BUT, we must get behind the team and support them positively over the bedding in period, and I wouldn't be surprised to see big signings to sugar this bitter pill.

The King is dead - Long live the King! I will drink to the memory of Nigel tonight. Thanks Nigel you're a top man!

Time To Get Behind "ALL" The Players
at 19:11:32

Absolutely right Nick. There is no way that any supporter should boo or verbally abuse any player in your team. Ever. Confidence makes the difference between winning and losing, so why would you do that? God forbid if those doing this have children, what do they do when they don't consistently do well - tell them they're rubbish? If you can't be positive and handle the pressure - don't go to the game.
