Much improved over last 2 games and I have faith in what I now see. However truth remains - Our strikers are struggling to register. Our wingers & midfield are struggling to create. Found myself thinking, how could we operate with no strikers - attacking midfielders breaking into box as played by another Spanish coach up the M6. How might this work for us? Would it? Which players would benefit? Thoughts on a postcard... |

If you are missing the football fix like me, you'd be tempted to sneak in on this pre-season friendly Good performances by Battache, Bansal-Mcnulty, Dalling, Remy and Gubbins - would have liked to see a couple of them make the Austria flight. Rs were much neater in midfield zipping it aiound well and quick. - unlucky to lose Philips came on at HT along with several others - unsure of all the names |

Matthew Brazier - a player who instantly takes me way back to that era. Thanks Matthew - good times. One of our own. My thoughts with his family at this sad time for them when everything must seem unreal. |

Just Back - well after a nights sleep at least Hugely impressed and encouraged. Paul Furlong, Chris Ramsay and the players take a lot of credit out of this. As mentioned before and you will have seen online the boys were excellent in possession - very neat, v composed, good football brains against a team almost to a man and good few inches taller and bulkier than them. Ball on the ground, slick interplay...but no final ball, cutting edge...could have done with a young Eze really. Loved watching this. The WBA fans around me said the same - better football by QPR , well played. Of course the result says otherwise. Impressions Our right side had a real handful dealing with the best player on the pitch the big, tricky and fast WBA left winger who got 2...so that's something that needs working on. As already mentioned Gubbins looks a good prospect. I also particularly liked the midfield interplays where Aaron Drewe and Shiloh Remy put in particularly good games. Jake Frayling deserves a mention too. Kai W I was accomplished and aggressive and is a reliable LB who could step up imho. Marcus Brooks and Dil De Silva were full of energy - didn't see that much of Grant as he mainly operated the other side of the pitch and my eyesight isn't up to much these days! My Rs MOM - Aaron Drewe, involved in everything. |

Buttons - Hate them to this day. When my wife came home with a new cardigan with big round buttons, I went somewhat irrational I fear! That and the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang |

Rooting for Saffron now. I remember Stuart Wardley as being a brief and unexpected bright spot in an otherwise dark period for the Rs. Good luck |

Hi Smeg, its appears to me that McLaren has rolled back bigtime on the bringing forward "youth" meme. And tbf McLaren cannot afford to have another high profile failure on his CV - much much safer to draft in experience than work with the youngsters. So its looking like we are back in short term rather than long term planning. BTW I'm not arguing we didn't need new experienced players after losing so many - but McLaren is not doing his job if he doesn't give responsibility to younger players too - revolving BOS, Smyth, Chair, Manning (when back) in midfiled would do for a start and Oteh up front |

I have got to agree with you Northern. We were crying out for pace and width in the final 20 mins - so instead of bringing on BOS or little Smyth, McLaren brings on Cameron! And then he complains that we perhaps ought to have gone on and won won the game...! I don't get it. What I am beginning to comprehend is that Shteeve is understandably looking only yo the short term. Professionally he can't afford another high profile failure on his CV, so he is racking and stacking reliable, older, experienced players who he thinks will do a short term job for him and the club...and tbf losing Onuaha, Robinson, Smithies etc experience was needed. So what has the new management neglected...? They talk a good game about bringing on a young and talented squad, but they are not showing many signs making good on this. McLaren is now paying lip service to what he was brought in to do - i.e. coach the youngsters to success. Evidence - Manning, Smyth, BOS, Chair not getting a meaningful game. Kakay dropped, Eze played out of position. McLaren - in bringing in experience don't forget what you were appointed to do - bring the young through, build value, sensibly blood youth players within an established system. Be bold - don't just rely on the "been there, done that, journeyman" brigade. |

The Jordan Cousins debate No, lets NOT give him the boo boy treatment. Unlike some players I've seen pull on the hoops, Jordan has the skill, engine and capacity to be more than he appears at the moment. He hasn't to my knowledge given anything less than 100%. Anyway covering space, closing down his man is a positive contribution - a 5/6 if you like. I can see it - the guy has it in him to go above and beyond. Does he need arm round the shoulder or apt word in ear from McLaren? That's what you get paid for Shteeve. Or perhaps he just needs the management to give him the license to do his stuff more creatively - knowing that Scowen,Lluongo, Freeman, Hall will tuck in and cover the space. You don't shoot a man for diligently staying at his post, following orders. So, NO lets reserve our boos for the overpaid wnkrs who come in and don't give a toss - SWP, Bosingwa, Hateley, Barton... |

I agree with what you say corse. I don't like Cousins too much - lots of running but when you assess it, it doesn't amount to a whole heap of anything - just covering space, no killer balls, no runs to get up to the forwards, nothing unexpected. Couple of times today, he could have played it forward with urgency but chose less ambitious "keep the ball moving" type options. Think Hemed and Wells could grow to link pretty well together - some positive signs today imho. Please, please, please lets get some breadth at least off the bench...It provides a different and pacier wide option to Eze and Freeman - neither of whom are natural out wide. Game was crying out for BOS or little Smyth. With abit more midfield urgency (Lumley also v slow at times) and positive subs we could have got a closer shot at 3 points - now 6 points on the tablke would look a whole lot brighter... |
