A must - you can't argue Symes brings more energy, and he's not a goal threat. Grimes is.

While one up front was necessary and worked well initially, we'll have to think about playing with two proper strikers again.

It sounds like we competed well throughout tonight. The difference between the two teams was that they had a proven goalscorer (Zoko) wheras we had Symes, who is struggling to say the least. We had more corners, shots etc than them, but lacked a killer instinct. It's looking like we will go down, but there are plenty of signs that JC knows how to organise us. It certainly isn't his fault that we sold COG and then didn't BUY a decent replacement when we had the money... It's not JC's fault that SE was allowed to stay in charge after the Bradford FA Cup game when it became obvious that he was not right for the job....and it isn't his fault that Beech was given the job "to lose" instead of appointing a Manager with a track record. These are the decisions that will ultimately decide our final position. The 7 or 8 lost opportunities for JC's team to gain points when we faced beatable teams but were hopelessly second best. Hopefully, JC will be allowed to bring in a couple of good quality strikers and a winger during close season. He has already demonstrated that he knows how to organise the defence, and we have a good enough midfield to challenge in L2. We also have a particularly sound financial base from which to work, and therefore, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic, even if it hurts at present. Keep the faith.

In all honesty our fate was probably sealed in October when we had a run of "easy games". The seeds were sown then and we have had a losing mentality since then. JC has almost turned it round but we're lacking going forward. We also lack belief, shown by the way we concede goals straight after scoring. For me preparation for life in League 2 starts now and we start building for then now. If that means blooding some youngsters who may have a bigger part to play next year then so be it. If that means experimenting with formations and players then so be it. You never know, there may be a spark that turns the season round as it is still not impossible - just very, very unlikely.

Yep.....your post makes me feel a tad better tonight,as we are surely goosed for this season and we need to be planning for League 2 once again. Planning early will give us a better chance to hit the ground running in August and I am sure Coley will be preparing for the League he knows best. I think and hope we are in safe hands. Still gutted though.

That's pretty much what I was thinking when I posted about JC putting other players into the mix now, and other combos - there's nothing to lose, and he might just hit upon something 442Dale's idea of a Kennedy-Tutte midfield pairing is worth a go Whatever happens, I hope no-one has the stupidity to start having a go at JC. I notice on another thread that we're being accused of a lack of fight - by people who weren't even at the game. idiots.

I agree with all of that but its all hindsight. We had to sell COG in the end or risk having a unhappy player on our hands. How easy is it to buy a established league one striker who would want to come to Rochdale, i dont know! Eyre was a gamble that didnt pay off but the damage was done because he shaped the squad with his signings and outrageous use of the loan market. The Beech scenario was a even bigger gamble than the Eyre one, as a coach i would imagine Eyre at least had a better pedigree. Beechs body language and the way he came over when interviewed was very poor. The thing that i would identify as being the main problem from the start of the season was the amount of loan players we have tried to rely on. There doesnt seem to have been any plan regarding making permanant signings and actually building a team. Over reliance on loan players can affect team moral and it becomes impossible to form a team spirit and a bond. The standard of loan players has also been very poor,so if this was a strategy to save money and do things on the cheap then it has backfired big time. When the chips are down we dont have all the players on the pitch battling for the club. We are also left with no saleable assets because we havent invested in players, instead we have borrowed cast offs or kids from other clubs. So if this is the scenario the Chairman and directors plumped for at the start of the season (rely on loan players) then they must shoulder the blame, espescially when we have more than a few quid in the bank !!

Failing to replace key players is the reason we find ourselves where we are. When we sold COG, Dawson and lost Done, Wiseman, and didn't recruit permanent players, we were sunk. When did we last have a permanent 1st choice goalkeeper? Sam Russell? That's a ridiculous situation for a League One club after 2 seasons. There seemed to be no vision, no forward planning and no sense of urgency to replace key players. We are always told that 'money was available' but you can bet that situation will radically change the minute we are confirmed as being relegated - if that happens. I am seriously worried about the effect that relegation will have on the club finances, because the ability of the club to attract decent players will be seriously hampered, and there will be a huge drop in revenue. I have no doubt that some current players will want to leave and may well have clauses that allow them to do so. Unless things change soon, there could be some worrying times around the corner. John Coleman is the right man for the job, wherever we finish at the end of the season. Let's just hope we are still in this division.

Match thread on 23:39 - Mar 6 with 963 views | Phil26 | The obvious fact is that all of the players have at some time in their involvement with our club must have stated that they will play their hearts out to remain committed to our cause in the first division. They now have to start and repay that commitment. I'm for one, is seasonally tired over the majority of years to put up with a total lack of commitment on their behalf, to Rochdale Football Club. They surely must understand that to agree to sign for us knowing our history, should promise to deliver what the long suffering 'fans' want, regardless of who we are perceived to be. If not, don't sign and piss off! They, the players have the facilities to better themselves,be it a wooden step to excercise on or whatever, Do they want it? No, I don't think so. Defeat is easy to lay down and accept. Lions may want to differ!

The worrying thing is we are and have been easily beaten by yet another team that's average at best and even more worrying is everyone we play seems capable of upping their game whenever needed to beat us, don't like this tactic of waiting to concede before we change things, Jones needs a rest its so blatant to see and Akpro was injuried so why oh why keep them both on the pitch so long, don't mind losing or relegation but that second half would have got us beat playing a conference side let alone an established league 1 side, most the above could be applied for the notts county game and Scunthorpe away etc etc, simple facts are were not good enough and most players haven't the stomach for a tackle nevermind a fight, unacceptable

"Average at best". Don't mean to be rude but what the F*ck?. they are a place out of the play-offs, one point behind 6th and 2 games in hand, so to suggest they are average is so far off the mark, because to be honest, the league table doesn't lie, which hurts me to say, because that means we're the worst, but i guess thats the case, we've been shocking, truely shocking. Some Rochdale fan's are so out of touch with reality it's untrue, a team who the final play-off spot is theirs to lose, is average, grimes is to blame for us being bottom and some who just make things up to suit their argument (AKA grimes apparently letting 6 balls go past him in the 6 yard box). I give up, it's no wonder the team has too.

Yes as i say average at best, the same team that Brentford walloped 4 passed a full 7 days ago so hardly flying as a team you'd say? If you'd open your eyes instead of jumping on peoples opinion you'd actually appreciate if you take the top 4 teams away and possibly MK the league is "average at best"hence my earlier comment? Next you'll be telling us all Notts County must also be decent due to their position too, another example of how poor the league actually is rather than said teams ability sadly! Speaking of way off the mark comments you seem to have succeeded in spectacular fashion Edit- having read your retained list comments i shouldn't have bothered with a reasoned reply, your choice of 12 current players who'd "hold their own" in league 1 are currently getting us relegated, does your "few additions" include David Silva,Messi and Ronaldo then?
