Get the feeling this manager has taken these players as far as he can.
Manager not the problem-let’s admit it it’s the players.

To me do not look even close to scoring.

We have looked even more blunt since we lost Kolli and this has played a part in losing 6 of 8 games. Whilst our attack has been dire for years and never properly addressed in that time we keep getting results like today.

Ever since the 7-1 drubbing at Albion a few years back, we have really struggled against them, even though they have no parachute payments just like us. They still challenge the top of the league each season. Sadly our away form has settled into a pattern of defeat after defeat which hadn't really happened in the previous two seasons. I am unsure if our bad form is just on the strikers not scoring or has the team mentally relaxed thinking they are safe and have lost some focus?

Like Curbishley had taken Charlton as far as he could - if your striking options are Alfie Lloyd this is as far as anybody can take it.

After watching that it's hard to believe that there are 3 teams worst than us. Slow boring rubbish. The manager has to take his share of the blame.

This! It's absolutely bizarre that some on this board persist in continuing to make some kind of ludicrous dichotomy in which the manager can never do any wrong (while those of us who point out where he falls short are pilloried from post to, uh, pillar) and the players are always left carrying the can. Even with Chair, Saito and Dembele on the pitch against ten men, we still didn't look close to scoring, and both the manager and the club need to address that in terms of the coaching, set-up, and the obvious issues with our frontline personnel or lack thereof since Charlie Austin's first coming. If they can't, they should roll over Beethoven and bring in people who can.

If Marti had every single squad member fit and available and performances were identical then I could start to agree with you T_Block

My only criticism of Marti today would be that as the game painfully ground its way to the end he really didn't try anthing different, nothing out of the box.

Which is a bit of an indictment, no? What exactly was he doing then?

But that doesn't explain why, bar Saito's terrible miss, we failed to carve out a single goalscoring chance v 10 men all half. Alfie hardly covered himself in glory from what I saw, but the 'service' into him was appalling and in fact virtually non-existent. Besides, I dont think there's a law against other players trying to score, is there?

A mediocre midtable team with no strikers loses a game to a play off team. Hardly a shock. No surprise to see some (one?) of the usual suspects overreacting to confirm his own obsessive agenda with the manager.

Prior to social media, this is the sort of game that would have been forgotten within a couple of days. Now every single game is dissected far beyond its merits.

No excuses but that was a cheap penalty looks like mulumby ran across Colback. But Pal should have stopped the cross. Kocki header should have gone in. But against 10 should have got something.

Agree with this.

The squad is extremely limited indeed. I fear, barring the miracle of finding a couple of strikers for peanuts, we're not going anywhere any time soon.

Another re-building job this Summer. Another few Madsens, Andersens and Ashbys incoming no doubt 🤦‍♂️.........but let's hope not......

Massive job to do this Summer (yet again)

It's not the defeat, but the nature of it. At least have a go, do something, anything to grab a goal.
I'm a big fan of Marti, but the performances are becoming very sterile. We just seem to have fizzled out. Really disappointing.

But, you've got to look at the quality of the players. Pretty poor.

Oh God here we go.

Every win is a playoff push and every loss is an end of the road moment recently.

Howabout, we might reach the target we set ourselves at the end of the season but let's wait and see. i.e., not shitting our pants looking over our shoulder into the last 2 fixtures.

Thats completely on Colback.

Without him, we great chance going in level against ten. Minimum draw then.

But yes Marti got it wrong again today also.

Resting Frey and Varane made no sense. Put them on later, If they need some rest, put them on in 75 minutes, Lloyd was ineffective and Varane could have come on instead of Colback

Not buying the line, minor injury. They were not selected.

If you rest players and we lose, resting them completely is wrong.

At least others on here are basing the argument on poor performance etc

You on the other hand are suggesting that once again there is a conspiracy and that the club are lying and that Marti would go into a game without a recognised striker (so he's lying too)

Exactly WHERE have you got the evidence to suggest that both Varane and Frey were rested/not selected?

So he did.

He and Alfie need to switch squads next season.

Too soon for another thread covering midweek, let alone next season.

Seriously, where do you go in terms of selection in the next game after this one ? Add Dembele and go for the shortest average height awards ?

There’s clearly an agenda coming out in public now and it’s not a good look for anyone.

I guess the ‘chicken children’ are ‘manifesting’ it somewhere else but it felt like a dogleg in the wrong direction today for this boomer.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

TBH, I didn't take the op as a criticism of Marti, but of the squad he's been given. I kind of agree, albeit baring in mind our finances.

If you told me a few months ago we'd be 12 points clear of the bottom 3, then I'd of snapped your hand off.

This year was always going to be a year of transition, especially with the recruitment we've done.

We're definitely not going down, but we just lack that consistency and a proper number 9 that would push us up the table.

It does feel like we're probably going to end up finishing anywhere between 12th and 18th, still a respectable season, but probably can do better1.

But this isn't the year of transition. Its next season. We are going to have at least 6 to 7 new starters, not squad or subs, but starters next season.
Two ways to look at it; bad, losing all the experience or good, we were pretty poor anyway.

I'm going for good as let's be honest, bar a three month period we have been gash to watch.

I haven't got any evidence other than it's a three game week.

Both have picked "minor injuries" in training according to the club statement previous to the game .That's poor to have two key players pick up injuries in the same week on the training ground.

But if miraculously they both picked in the next two games, I would suggest it's suspect.

I never said it was fact.

Also, I didn't think it was that poor performance, just lacking the right people in the middle would have helped.

But yes thanks for the character assassination.

I would call it little white lies myself and that's completely guesswork on my part , but if as I expect, both start against Middlesbrough and Leeds, then perhaps young sir, we could chat again !!!

No tempo , no idea , no plan . Too safe
WBA nothing special today , one shot on target says it all really , if that’s all you can show playing against 10 for a half , well you have to ask questions, sometimes you just got to play percentage football , we are not going up , we are not going down , just have a go , try something different maybe a bit risky but fans want you have a go , not tippey tapping around

It was OK tippy tappy at times, but no cutting edge - that much is uncontroversial, presumably.

Can we sharpen our edge sufficiently when Frey, Kollo and goal machine Celar are all back? Methinks the serrations may still be rather too few.

If MC felt able to do something dangerous and attend a Fans Forum, a number of us might be interested to learn what his/the club's ambitions are for next season.
