First Cinema you saw a film in? 08:50 - Sep 4 with 9761 viewsRangersDave

This could be helpful for me,

As a hobby, i travel round the country, visiting, and photographing (both externally and where possible, internally) old cinema buildings.

So far i have visited and photographed 1452 of these wonderful buildings (am on facebook as "old cinema buildings (UK & ROI)" i have travelled from lands end to Inverness, and Dover to Holyhead.....

Anyway, the question is 'what was the first 'proper' old school type cinema you saw a film in?

Mine? Palace Cinema, High Wycombe for 'Thunderbirds are go!'

Grenada Acton for Saturday morning pictures. I can still remember the Acton Grenadiers song we used to sing every week.

Buddy Holly was an act on stage at the Kilburn State cinema. My recently deceased mate Frank Torpey (original member of Sweet) told me that gig in 52/53 (not sure which year) had a huge influence on him getting into music.

My mum saw Cliff Richard at the Kilburn State in 1958 and I was carol singing at Kilburn station one night Rod Stewart and the Faces played there in the early 70s, we made a ton from the tartan hordes.

Mrs Sheen and I saw Lou Reed at the Kensington Odeon in the early 90s. He was walking down the stairs just in front of us.

Did anyone go to the Victoria Station Cartoon Cinema? I went a number of times as a lad and loved it. A unique place https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/1248

The Odeon Park Royal located between Park Royal and Hanger Lane Tube Stations, now a Premier Inn. It was a 6, 7 minute walk from our house, the film was A Hard Days Night.

I remember my parents going to watch the early Bond films, my father was always suited and booted, my mother wore an evening dress, that was the norm back then.

In the early days of my cinema watching 50s/60s at the end of the performance the National Anthem was played and everyone stood still until it had finished,
If you could make it out before it started to play you were good to go but if it started while you were on the move you stood stock still were ever you were until it had finished.

Another cinema my old Nan took me to was at the Savoy East Acton, I think it might have been an ABC cinema but the memory fades.

Also had a cartoon cinema at Waterloo Station just by platform 1 . They then changed it to show soft porn movies. Just what the tired commuter needs before heading home to Virginia Water.

It was at The Edgware Odeon. The Towering Inferno. I remember the guy coming out the lift on fire and I totally freaked out. My mum had to take me out the cinema and home because I was so traumatised by that... Quite embarrassing really as I was 27 at the time.

No I was about 8 I think.

Never knowingly right.

Can't remember the brand, but it was in Harrow in the Hill before the newer shopping centre was built.

Recall it was a bank holiday and the car park shut early and we had to get the tube home, the auld lad was fuming

In 1963(?), my parents saw the Beatles play at the Astoria in Finsbury Park and the Granada in Walthamstow.

For me, it was UGC Staples Corner, off the Edgware Road. Can't remember the year or the film, but no doubt some Disney animation. Only had six screens, and later became Virgin Cinema and Cineworld, where I worked in my late teens.

They've plonked the new Thameslink station, Brent Cross West, right on the carpark
next to the old building. Went past it on Friday night on the way back from the Luton game.

I also have memories of being taken to see Jurassic Park at Empire Leicester Square,
and other films at Warner Brothers a few doors down.

My great uncle was a projectionist at the original Odeon in Leicester Square just
after the war, he would have been present at some classic premieres back in the day.

Me too if we're going back to Saturday morning flicks.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.
