Mick Beale interview in 5 years time

Poll: Expectations for this season?

If he goes to the pseudo-Rangers - and it's still a, I would like to feel, sizeable if, despite the media reports - he'll clearly deserve all the brickbats he gets his way on the way out and then some. But in my opinion, the failure of the club to hold him to his contract will also make both LF's and LH's positions untenable, and they should follow him through the door. As for my sorry arse, I really feel that'll be me just about done with the club after 45 years (stop applauding, some of you).

Right now, watching the WC actually feels cheery!

I'm certainly not the biggest fan of the board but why would they do that? Let's face it, the guy has played us right from the start. Clearly thinks he is destined for better things, so just let him go, bank the money and (crucially) get a decent replacement in quickly, ideally someone who doesn't think he's the Second Coming. Which rules Sol out.

So you think the club's appointment of Beale with the usual fanfares from the usual people, only to grant one and possibly two clubs (depending on who you believe/read) permission to speak to our manager 6 months into a 3-year contract, somehow doesn't make us look stupid, spineless and gutless - and all that matters is the comp (which should be just enough to help us continue to fail to buy a forward for another year) and 'moving on'?

Wow!

I guess you're just another fan who treats football as it was a tawdry merry-go-round powered by a virtual reality machine in a parallel universe.

But why would we want to keep him now? He clearly only turned down Wolves because he'd been promised the Rangers job. He doesn't want to be here - what would be the point of forcing him to stay?

Personally, I'll be delighted to move on now. Let the pot-bellied pig waddle off to come second every season in Scotland. Let's make a decent appointment before we play Burnley and get on with it - the league is wide open this season.

If an employee has a release clause, and it is activated, usually through a monetary value being reached, then the club is powerless. This whole saga says a lot about Beale, and his character, or lack of it.
What should the club have done?

You usually make some sense, but not on this one. This is ALL on Beale. There is nothing this board could do to keep him. He hustled, we fell for it and when it started to get a bit tough, he ran off.

I will join you in blaming the board for a few things, not this though...

Can we go out yet?

At the very least, if he walks, the Board will have a lot of explaining to do about any release clause, the granting of permission to another club to open talks etc. I should have thought that much at least is self-evident. They won't, of course, to us mugs - sorry fans - citing the usual claptrap about confidentiality and other self-protective/cloak-and-dagger industry bullshit.

Like a number of others, though, I feel Beale's whole image seems to be dying by a thousand cuts, and I've already had a bellyful of it.

Your narrative on this makes no sense at all. We seemed to have hired a good prospect of a young manager. He's done ok and has been offered a better job, for more money at a higher profile job ( where he has history). If there is a buyout clause and everyone is happy, what is the problem?
It's just like signing a player and selling him on.
Absolutely no issue with management on this at all. It's football

Why have a go at the board over this? They appointed what seemed a great candidate, and when his commitment was questionable, put a decent release clause in.
This whole affair reflects badly on Beale but the board has done well.

£1.5mill “compensation”?????

Fcuk me he’s committed FAR more than that in club spending in his short time here
The club are culpable IMHO

However, look at Mick and laugh
What an absolute c0ck he appears at the end of this.
More u turns than numerous Tory MP’s and in a record space of time - there are shrewd and considerate Boards and owners out there; they will be aware of his conduct and character for some time to come I hope. Likewise players who want consistency will maybe thing twice about PowerPoint presentations he gives them on future plans when touted for signing up.
He’s a caravan professional…. never pitched up anywhere long enough to leave a legacy, always on the move, others will clear up the mess. Worked with hundreds of pro’s? Well of course, if you pop up everywhere like whack a mole then you’ll meet loads.

Mark my words……if he’s not asking Charlton players to “go to the well” by January 2027 I’ll be shocked

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Agree, it must be a long time since one of our managers has attracted a compensation fee, we move on with the project. Warburton who treated our club with respect did a fantastic job to get things competitive at QPR and stabilise the playing side. Beale was building on this, expect next manager will continue the progress.

So let's get this right - the Board (after umpteen failed appointments in recent years, all heralded as The Real Thing) hire an up and coming manager after, according to he who shall remain nameless, an unprecedented degree of due diligence, obligingly incorporate a nominal release clause (allegedly) into his contract, fail to quash speculation he's about to go to Wolves, giving all of us poor sods (who aren't cynical 'move on' merchants at least) days of heartache, reportedly release him to talk to Rangers, allow it all to kick off on multiple media platforms once again . . . and 'the Board has done well'!

Sometimes I think it's time for all of us to pack up and go home!

Beale has shown himself to be nothing but a two faced, untrustworthy, lying scumbag. The bollox he spouted out after the Cardiff game now looking back on it to be the most despicable thing I’ve heard in football. He has shown utter contempt to us supporters and for me the board have acted as they should have done. If they would have tried to hold him to his contract then he would have simply resigned and for me Les played it spot on with his quite about only wanting to deal with people who wanted to be at the club for the right reasons. Beale doesn’t so he can foxtrot Oscar. I just hope that he crashes and burns at Ibrox. Our club is infinitely bigger than him and always will be.

How can you have a 'project' if you're tearing up your management team every five minutes, telling the world and his wife that we're a selling club and open to any offers for anyone at any time, and giving press releases to tell us our ground is irredeemably non-viable? Or perhaps I'm the one who's a mad nostalgic and everyone else is miraculously, modernly sane.

To slightly misquote Nick Cave, 'where's my nurse /I need some f*cking healing'!

Thought it was a shrewd appointment by the board and didn’t they let us know, not in a good or bad way, more like doing it with some due diligence.

The fact that for the second time someone comes knocking on the door and the silence afterwards is deafening. It’s like he’s always going to talk to everyone who approaches him.

Obviously a dream job for him but personally, sadly and reluctantly he can go and f off on his merry way asap. Lot of talk about the board. I bet there not particularly pleased or impressed just as much as we are.

Just don’t knock the system, even though it sucks, when we take a manager from someone else.

Apparently Gary Megson got a lot of jobs because he interviewed well.
