Pretentious = tries to engage with intellectual issues
Self indulgent = a world famous artist who can do exactly what he wants
Ok, it's not everyone's cup of tea. Some people prefer Abba to Beethoven. Fine by me, it's a free country. What I object to is dissing something out of ignorance.
Calling my opinion ignorance is rude AND ignorant. I like both ABBA & Beethoven, along with a very wide spread between those examples, as my contributions to many of the music threads on here will demonstrate. Pretentious: attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than is actually possessed. "pretentious art films" Self Indulgent: (of a creative work) lacking economy and control. I hope that clears up the matter of what I consider the worst film I've ever seen. FWIW It's the only one of his films that I feel this way about.
The grass is always greener.

Ya, I do get that, and he did make some good films, but people paid into the crap stuff too.
I don't admire that, really. I wouldn't admire it in a footballer, you're supposed to have pride in your work not make jokes about how bad it is to the mugs who paid in.
I see your point, Brian. Maybe the better analogy would have been of the footballer who has a great career but still signs up for some rubbish league in Indonesia or whatever where they shamble about half-arsed and pocket the millions.
Wouldn't say I admire that as such, but I suppose I am recognising that Caine came from a genuinely tough background and I do understand his sense that if money is being offered you take it - give it away to your family or charity if you don't need it, but take it anyway because you know what its like to have nothing. No-one makes anyone pay to watch crap films after all, there are plenty good ones out there.
I guess that's true with a lot of footballers that we think of as greedy, especially ones from e.g. Brazil or Africa. It may not be right, but I get how they come to think like that.

Throughout the period of it being trailered, I could not have given less of a toss about it. Especially given the bin fire Man of Steel was.
But then the reviews came out, and they were all 1/10, one of the worst films ever made. I grabbed my wife and like "omg we have to go and see this today!"
And it didn't disappoint. Some bad films provide entertainment with how bad they are, some are just bad and have no redeeming features at all.
BvS was the former. It's terrible but I had a riot watching it in the cinema, I was wailing with laughter.
Lex making that lass drink piss "Tell me............DO YOU BLEED? YOU WILLLLLLLLLLL" The film resolving with the Step Brothers "Did we just become best friends?" The Flash time travelling back into a scene at random at IT NEVER BEING MENTIONED EVER AGAIN "If there is even a 1% chance we have to take it as an absolute certainty" run that maths past me again Bruce Batman straight up murdering dudes Marvel taking 4 years to put together The Avengers, but Batman gets the Justice League up and running by watching some YouTube videos Bringing in good ole Jimmy Olsen and having a terrorist execute him inside 3 minutes. Oh Zach, you are a cad There's a whole bit where Lois lane throws away the kyroptonite spear, then goes after it 2 minutes later and almost drowns. Someone in the cinema said out loud "why is this happening?"
A hoot.

In The Princess Bride Vizzini describes the classic blunders as:
1. Never start a land war in Asia 2. Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line

Right, but people don't know going in the door whether the film's going to be bad? And some of them have little cash to be flinging at Caine?
Anyway, no big thing. I met him and his wife once while out walking. They were both genuinely lovely. (I'm trying very hard not to say "Not a lot of people know that").

Kenneth Branagh's film Belfast was dreadful.Without doubt the most dumbed down movie i have ever seen.
A bit clichéd but reasonable entertainment. Ciaran Hinds, Judi Dench and the boy were excellent.
2 recent award winners to avoid Nomadland Power of the Dog Lovely scenery, awful (no?) Storyline

The Quiet Man. Possibly the most anti-Irish, racist, misogynistic and insulting dung-heap of Paddywhackery ever spat out by Hollywood. And that, my friends, is truly saying something. So it is, begad and bejesus, an' no mishtake.

One of my most disappointing cinema experiences very early on was the Tales of Beatrix Potter. I’d read all the books and though not up there with Lewis Caroll I still loved them. So with high expectations I then sat through two hours of no dialogue, a classical music score, and giant freakish ballet-dancing mutants. It meandered between dull and severely unsettling. It put me off animals in general.
Years later I’m prepared to reconsider this one but I’d need drugs.

John Wayne would not last long in todays society in fact some groups over here in America want his career achievements erased from the records . I think its time for QPR to kick off the season early because both this thread and the weather thread is getting a bit nasty .QPR fans turning on each other is no good and yes I know its hot outside.

But won't we then turn on each other over football?

Not the worst films ever, but there seem to be quite a lot of films on Netflix that aren't quite substantial enough to be films. Maybe it's because their main business is making series?

As a kids film, the Princess Bride is incredible. Plenty of action, some great, funny lines, and a lovely story. Watched it 15-20 times with my son, and loads of my mates’ kids have it as one of their favourite childhood films.
“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!” - has me in tears every time.

Perhaps it's the British sense of humour but it's not for me. I thought it was garbage, as did my kids and my mates' kids.
Is it a kid's flick or an adult spoof? Is it romance? Is it comedy? Is it an action movie? A bit like a combo washing machine/tumble dryer, or TV/DVD; it's trying to be all things to all men yet fails to do any one thing well.
“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!” Not funny. Not even remotely. I guess it really does takes all sorts to make a world.

It’s not supposed to be funny - he’s avenging the death of his father. He’s dedicated his entire life to finding and killing the man who murdered his Dad. It’s moving (well, it moves me!)
Each to their own.

Really?
I don't see much of that. I have a few posters on ignore, mind you.
I think LFW has whiled away the Summer very nicely.

Very confused by this post - this thread has had a brilliant character, in jovial spirit with hearty opinions and has been tremendously entertaining?
