So the two for me who never got the success they deserved are XTC, who although found success in late 70s and early 80s could not get arrested in the U.K. after English Settlement. Some great records like Skylarking, oranges and Lemons, Nonsuch and Apple Venus up until 2000. Also their psychedelic alter-egos The Dukes of Stratosfear.
Originally a b-side this one from the Skylarking era made them big college stars in the US at least
The other are the Go Betweens. Australian band with two great songwriters in Robert Forster and Grant McLennan. Never quite made it and split in ‘89 until a 2000 reunion which offered greater commercial success. Sadly McLennan died of a heart attack at the age of 47 in 2006.
These are both Mclennnan numbers and perhaps amongst their most commercial

You're very knowledgeable Prof, always interesting to read.
Thanks. As mentioned in another thread I recently read Robert Forsters book about the Go Betweens. Very bittersweet and a catalogue of near misses. There’s also an excellent documentary on them ‘Right here’ which may be lurking on Netflix or Sky somewhere

Probably not albini but never mind
Doolittle is Gil Norton producing. Surfer Rosa was Albini. Both brilliant records- absolute peak of Pixies. Still a great 80s record
Albini is a great recorder of drums. Got a bit diluted by label-ordered remixes on Nirvana’s. In utero. To both his and the band’s annoyance. The Wedding Present ‘s ‘Seamonsters’ is another great Albini- produced records.

Here you go, Prof. I’d like to present you with the well earned award of The Golden Anorak for 2019!
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Always bit of a guilty pleasure . Very uncool, but Ricky Ross wrote some storming tunes. Not least this one
A good friend of mine gets quite irate when any kind of music is labelled a "guilty pleasure". He is strongly of the opinion that there's no such thing as far as music is concerned and frowns on all sorts of aural snobbery.
A good tune is a good tune. Not for everyone perhaps, but still of value.
Case in point...

You are right of course. But Deacon Blue were very uncool yet we’re both a fantastic live act and good songwriters. Much easier to see that at 51 than 21 Of course.
