Got to be dropped after that, petulant, unprofessional, really poor performance from the lad.

Wish I'd chosen a different username...

Agree

Today he showed why he's nowhere near capable of playing at a higher level. Time for Perkins to get another chance

Disappointed with the consensus on here so far as I was beginning to think he was heading in a better direction of late. Seems not.

He’s a middle of the road League One midfielder who never pushed on when it seemed that was a possibility. Doesn’t make him a bad player but he’s behind Rathbone, Cannon and Perkins on what I’ve seen this season so far, and that’s with none of the others being amazing either.
Would also say that Aaron Morley’s display v Bury was as good a game as any other midfielder has had.

Camps needs a proper spell on the bench, for his own good too.

He might think so himself, but performances like today’s and many others like it in the last 12 months will continue to ensure there aren’t any takers willing to pay a fee. Can only see him leaving Dale now for free when his contact is up. He’s looking like ending up a “broken toy”, the type of player Hilly used to sign.

I would say from the games I've seen, his playing level has been above middle of the road in the most part, but he certainly seems to have lost some of the energy that characterised his play.

I would agree about time on the bench. I would also like to see a midfield with Cannon and Ollie in it.

I wasn't there so can't comment on his performance today but Gillam has played well over the last few games and was well worthy of his place. I'm guessing the kids are on the bench because of the six or seven players that are out injured?

Gillam did quite well last week but can’t really see what type of player he’s supposed to be apart from one who runs about a lot putting pressure on opponents. His awareness has to improve substantially to warrant a regular starting place. That said, others were just as bad today.

One look at the team at Oldham should indicate who could have been on the bench, unless Cannon, Inman and Ntlhe suffered injuries.

Two in five games this season (albeit one aided by a deflection and one in the Tinpot Trophy) which ain't a bad ratio. I'm willing to bet it wouldn't even be an issue if we'd got a positive result today. I'm not saying he's the answer or that he'll ever amount to anything in the game but I think it's a bit unfair to be singling out a 19 year old kid on a day that sounds like nobody came out of with much credit.

Why wasn’t you whinging about his inclusion at scunthorpe or even last week? What was the difference if you feel so strongly?

Onto the topic. Camps has consistently been one of our worst players for well over a year, i’ve never bought the hype and never will. Has always been wasteful in possession and rarely plays the correct pass. Unfortunately form doesn’t seem to be a factor, as he appears almost ever present in our starting XI.

A touch harsh IMO...

Has the talent but I am not sure the brain. Camps believes the hype is enough and sadly its not.

Surprised me on Saturday I thought the Stadium of Light would be right up his street big stage big crowd but he was disappointing,

Consistency the problem he could look a world beater on Saturday v Pompey!.

It’s not harsh though, it’s a true reflection of his form over the past 18 months. He’s stood out in one game against spurs.

I think his career ambition is to get an assist off a chipped through ball as he tries it multiple times per game.

I honestly don’t know where his best position is, people say further forward but he isnt nearly creative enough to play there and has very little impact on the game. He isn’t nearly tenacious enough to play holding midfielder either.

He’s a bang average midfielder who’s had smoke blown up his arse and unfortunately believes it himself.

Genuine question- Why are so many convinced Camps has this superiority complex? Is it his conduct on the pitch or have people heard more to it?

Callum Camps on 12:51 - Sep 24 with 3162 viewsDaley_Lama

As with most opinions on players these days, they focus on the exceptions rather than the rule.

Camps is a solid, tough, central midfielder. He does lots and lots of things right.

The negatives however are picked up on and used against him.

1. He tries the wonder-pass to often which rarely if ever come off. This was something i personally agreed with last season
2. He is petulant. Not something i wholely agree with but his head certainly went down after he turned into trouble on the edge of his own box at Sunderland and his body language (slumped shoulders etc was easy to see)

He’s still young, how his career pans out is anybodies guess, everyone has ups and downs. Dagnall was preferred over Alfie, one now plays in Australia, the other for bury.

Callum contributes to the early chance created for Alby but for Sunderland's first he fails to put a decent challenge in to stop the cross.....similar for the 3rd, does n't help Raff chasing the runner/crosser and Raff has a go at him afterwards.......body language shows frustration.

Give the lad a rest perhaps?

Another thing with opinions on players (though not necessarily on this thread on the subject of Camps) is that a "verdict" is passed (JW11 has fallen into this category too soon and too often).

Agree with the sentiment of this post - just like games, careers of players ebb and flow. When De Gea came into the PL most people said "who". Proven strikers go through goal droughts. Form is not guaranteed and as the world becomes more and more "what have you done for me lately", there are too many who see only binary decisions in place of shades of grey.

Like with this season for Dale, sometimes things have to play out. Not saying we'll tear it up this year or Camps will kick on, but this is no time to pass judgement. I would suggest he needs patience and time out of the spotlight and be made to fight/prove to himself and the gaffer that he can get back into the first team; that he wasn't just a product of the successful sides he's thrived in in the past. Sometimes adversity makes people stronger. I hope this proves to be the case, since from what I've seen and heard, he doesn't appear to be the big "I am" at all.

Less could be more for CC.

I hope he has "grown up" he definitely needed too when he first came on the scene but fair do,s back then he was a young lad.

Time to cut out all flicks and tricks that come off infrequently - get back to properly influencing a game and bossing the midfield.

He has talent in spades but for whatever reason he just not cutting it at the moment.

Is it form? is it attitude? I don't know but I hope the lad can get back on track quickly starting this Saturday at Spotland v Pompey.

Callum Camps on 16:18 - Sep 24 with 2847 viewsRotherhamDale

Camps has never offered enough in my opinion.

He gets picked every week but he doesn't get enough goals, he doesn't influence the game as he should, he can't defend and he doesn't sit and dictate the game. So I'm not sure what he does.

Compare that to Rathbone who has added goals to his game.

Or Cannon who is an aggressive tackler

Or Perkins who will sit and defend.

Camps is probably the most creative but he doesn't do it anywhere near enough to justify starting ahead of those three.

Possession with progression.

"I hope he has "grown up" he definitely needed too when he first came on the scene but fair do,s back then he was a young lad".

He's only 22 years old and it's only a year since he had meningitis, some people develop into adulthood faster than others and the pressures on young footballers are huge.
Make no mistake, his illness will have taken a lot out of him both physically and mentally and he will have been keen to get back into the team, possibly too keen:

"Serious and potential long-term after-effects of meningitis are usually identified whilst a person is still in hospital. In these cases, follow-up care and recovery will be unique to that person.
Most people will make a good recovery from meningitis. However for many, they recover from the acute phase of the illness only to find that whilst trying to get back to their everyday activities, they experience some difficulties
For survivors, persistent headaches, tiredness, memory problems, personality changes and depression are just some of the ‘hidden’ after-effects they can experience.

Because the person seems to have visibly made a good recovery, it can be very difficult to make health professionals, family and friends understand that meningitis can still have a big impact on their lives and cause ongoing problems".

Callum Camps may well need more time to regain his previous fitness and mental health after a life-threatening illness., I don't think it helps if we single him out for criticism as I am pretty sure he is doing his best, perhaps time and an occasional rest on the bench will eventually get him back to his very best.

good post - I do agree with you.

My growing up comment ( although he is only 22 ) is because he has been around for a long time and knows what it takes in a mans world - even if still young in age its not really in the bonkers world of professional football.

If Camps is still struggling with the post viral fatigue then I do have every sympathy. I know first hand its debilitating and can be for years.

150+ first team games,at a comparatively successful time in our history, and still only age 22. Time will tell how many of our present crop of youngsters match, or better, his record.

Too many on here and in the crowd on matchday seem to be waiting for Callum to make mistakes. Some of the criticism verges on abuse. I don't know anything about social media but I expect it is at least as bad on there.

Encouragement is what is needed. He is one of ours and always appears proud to wear the shirt.
