Overrated QPR Hero's on 18:13 - Sep 17 by ted_hendrix | I agree wholeheartedly, we were behind the goal at Pompey when he done his ACL the poor bastard absolutely screamed in agony as he scored the goal and done his ACL at the same time. I've seen the bloke supporting Rangers in the away end at Cardiff, Colchester Utd and Notts bloody Forest, does that make him a hero? no but what it does it makes him one of us and that's all that matters to me not stupid fcking stats. |
Sorry Ted, I accidentally down arrowed your post. It was meant to be up 🔼.

Overrated QPR Hero's on 17:18 - Sep 17 by 2Thomas2Bowles | My point is he was/is a bit overrated 1 in 4 as a hero/legend George Goddard - 189 goals in 259 apps (1 goal per 1.37 apps) Brian Bedford - 180 goals in 283 apps (1 goal per 1.57 apps) Rodney Marsh - 134 goals in 242 apps (1 goal per 1.81 apps) Kevin Gallen - 104 goals in 414 apps (1 goal per 3.98 apps) Don Givens - 101 goals in 294 apps (1 goal per 2.91 apps) Stan Bowles - 97 goals in 315 apps (1 goal per 3.25 apps) Les Ferdinand - 91 goals in 185 apps (1 goal per 2.03 apps) Clive Allen - 83 goals in 157 apps (1 goal per 1.89 apps) Gary Bannister - 72 goals in 172 apps (1 goal per 2.39 apps) Simon Stainrod - 62 goals in 177 apps (1 goal per 2.85 apps) Les Allen - 62 goals in 151 apps (1 goal per 2.44 apps) |
I think you're missing the point. We all thought he'd be a goal machine because that's how he was as a youth player, but when he made his debut Les was already in that role; then next season the whole team collapsed so it's no surprise he didn't score buckets; he was red-hot at the start of next season but got that terrible injury. Naturally he was never the same sort of player again, it's to his credit that he re-invented himself as maker of goals for others, and he really was a key player in Holloway's side which pretty much brought the club back from near-death. As a striker I'd probably rate all those others ahead of him (allowing for the first two being well before my time) but that doesn't stop him being a hero to me, any more than Ollie is not a hero just because Venables, Sexton, Francis and Jago were all better managers.

Overrated QPR Hero's on 01:27 - Sep 18 with 2326 views | timcocking | If he hadn't done his achilles, he'd have been a superb player. You're talking about England's record youth team goal scorer, unless he's been overtaken since. Ridiculous op. Kevin Gallen was a remarkably consistent player. He made the game look easy, hardly put a foot wrong. He wasn't the quickest and no Adel Taarabt or Stan Bowles, but a superb contribution for Rangers over a long period (or several). Great link up play. He was playing centre mid a lot. We dominated every team we played at Loftus road with Kev up front. Unbeaten in the league at home one year. Unbeaten. A class act on and off the pitch, this strikes me as about my least favourite post of all time. [Post edited 18 Sep 2018 1:33]

Overrated QPR Hero's on 14:56 - Sep 17 by Rs_Holy | "Gallen signed a professional contract for Queens Park Rangers on his 17th birthday after setting phenomenal scoring records whilst in the youth team, breaking Jimmy Greaves' long-standing record at that level" (pinched from Wiki btw). I think that knee injury almost ended his career? At the very least he had to adapt his game and become a different sort of attacker. Less pace but more of a holding and bringing others into the game kind of player. |
There's a germ of truth in the OP. I interviewed Gerry Francis about this, years and years ago. His view was that Gallen scored all the goals in the youth team because physically he was streets ahead of other teenagers — he had reached his maximum speed and strength a couple of years earlier than the kids he was playing against (and remember his physique when he got into the first team, which was not that of a slight kid; he was built like a man). However, when he started playing senior football, he found that opponents were often stronger and often quicker, and he didn't actually have the technique to outplay them (he'd never needed technique as a youth player). Francis didn't think the injury had much to do with him never matching his youth team record at senior level. [Post edited 18 Sep 2018 8:47]

He was never going to match what he did at youth level. But to say he didn't have the technique is a little harsh. His technique was very good - I'd actually say it was a lack of pace that held him back if anything, and the injury certainly curtailed that. If you look at the way he played with his best two partners - Les and Furs, he was less a goalscorer, more a creator. I remember a 3-0 v Norwich years ago, where Gallen tore them apart with two superb balls through for Les to score. He was Ferdinand's perfect foil, even at that age. Then again with Furs, his ability to hold and lay, his vision, his work off the ball, all helped him become a superb strike partner - just a different player to what he was at youth level.

Overrated QPR Hero's on 19:24 - Sep 17 by Bluce_Ree | Gallen did miss a lot of chances. He remains probably the worst striker I've seen when he's running one at one at the keeper. If he had to think he'd mess it up but if he just stuck a foot out, he was pretty deadly. Only ever saw him score one from distance though. Much like Bircham he seemed to get by on his being a fan. Not sure he's a hero but my answer is Gavin Peacock. He was awful but could be decent when we were like 3-0 up and that seemed to win the crowd over. Not a player you could rely on when we were losing, which of course we mostly were. |
I thought he was pretty reliable at one-on-ones, so there we go. Peacock got a bad rap from some fans and he did go downhill quickly, but he realised that and bowed out with grace and honour. A player you could never accuse of hiding or not trying and scored loads of important goals for us. Baffling viewpoint.

Technically decent, but always used to slw the play down, spent many hour as a whippersnapper screaming "faster Peacock" in his direction. [Post edited 18 Sep 2018 11:05]
